2019-20 Russian Pairs' figure skating

M/G control their own fate and T/M's too, but also what's going to happen with MT/M. I was surprised with the difference between MT/M and M/G today, though.

I think (hope) M/G just had a bad day in the office. They can come back and still be second. MTM have taken me totally by surprise this season. Can't deny that they are good, but of course, I want M/G and T/M in the final.

I'm not writing them off at all. Just pleased they managed to get into second at Rostelecom. I see their performance there as an improvement, and I hope they will continue improving. Interesting rivalry indeed, and - but this is very personal - I am in love with Aleksandra and Dmitrii for now. They just skated so well here. But that doesn't mean I think T/M are to be written off. Please, no!

Oh, I wasn't referring to you! I'm glad you like both teams. I just saw some people being hard on poor T/M and felt bad. I personally love B/K, but I'll always support T/M too.

There were actually multiple scenarios for t/m to make it to the GPF with a 3+2. The one thing they needed not to happen was M/G go 1 and P/K 2 in France. That’s what happened.

I like M/G, but I also think worlds are in Canada and the effort is on to get m-t/m to the final to try to get them positioned for bronze at home in March.

I also like M/G but while their elements are strong, I don't find them engaging like B/K or stunning in their perfection (when clean) like T/M. So, if another team delivers (like Mt/M did here) I can easily see why the judges would go with. the other team. They just need time to develop their performance quality.

I think what happened to M/G in the SP is what people have been saying since the beginning of the season. They are strong technically but they lag behind the PCS department. They had the second highest TES mark behind S/H but lost second to M-T/M because of the PCS. They even lost the PCS mark to the very inconsistent Knierims who had a fall and D-M/G, who coming off an injury, scored a pretty bad 57.55. Of course it's only their first season as seniors and they're young so they got time.

their PCS is ridiculous, again 7 points behind MT/M in PCS FS thats why the lost.
MT/M got high PCS with those eeked out sbs and throws were still overscored in GOE.

they were unlucky with the SP mistake and skating first in freeskate order, you know somethings wrong when then the judges take time to show your scores
He was a bit surprised by the score it was their best FS yet.

looks like No GPF for T/M, Goodbye also as russian No.1
officially dumped by the judges for B/K and M/G

I wouldn't say they were dumped by the judges. They didn't help themselves a whole lot this year, but there was definitely a push for MT/M to qualify. I was taking a look at the scores in the SP, and six of the nine judges put M/G ahead of the Canadians, while the other three judges put M/G in fifth and sixth place, with a ten-point difference between the teams.

Also, the judges didn't agree in their marks at all for the two teams.

I said myself that the PCS M/G got in France were high for them, but the TES they got in Japan was too low, in both programs. Glad they qualified for the final so they can set themselves better in the international stage, but this felt like a weird competition to me.

I think that increasing PCS with strong technical foundations is easier than the other way. Also I'm expecting their PCS will rise naturally as with every new seniors.

Sad that T/M won't be in the finals, but let's hope it will give them the necessary impulse for improving before rusnats and of course euros and worlds.

Oh I agree completely it's easier that way.

I fully expected losing the PCS to M-T/M. I am however still surprised they lost the SP PCS to the Knierims (who aren't consistent or their country's #1) and D-M/G (who are currently very unprepared due to coming back from injury). I would have thought, despite the mistake, winning in France would have at least given them the boost to beat those teams PCS wise with the performances they gave.

Other teams got a bit of a boost in the SP over M/G. I'm not much for conspiracy theories, but it seemed to me like some of the judges definitely wanted to help MT/M--who skated well and deservedly got a chance to compete in the final. But in general, the judges didn't agree much in the scoring of the SP, compared to the FS, even though there were dissenting opinions there too.

I totally believe this. There IS a huge push from the judges to get MT/M on the world's podium. So of course they start the campaign early so it doesn't look suspicious at world's ("They were great all season long! See they totally deserve it! How can you claim politics and home bias?"). Protecting them and getting them to the GPF is part of that.

They did deserve their silver here and in Canada but their marks are inflated. The final gap between them and M/G should have been smaller and the gap between them and B/K in Canada bigger. I'm surprised they didn't try to get them past 140 here but no doubt if not at the GPF then easily at world's they will try.

The Canadian judge at NHK, Debbie Islam, is Mitch Islam’s mom. He works with M-T/M on a frequent basis. That’s a bit conflict-of-interest for me.

why was she on the judging panel then ?
this scenarios with conflict of interest should be look at when drawing the judges pool

I am a bit disappointed because I thought M/G would challenge B/K score wise, but they already made a great GP debut medaling
I think they have a chance to medal in GPF If M/MT get messy and dont get much inflated marks.

I do think M/G can eventually challenge B/K, but B/K have competed really well so far, they have more speed and flow in and out of elements, and the judges seem to love them now. In comparison, even with a fairly easier path to the final, M/G were dealt a bad hand in this GP season. They had problems in one program per GP, nothing to say about that, but in Japan they received very low marks all around, especially in the TES. I knew PCS was going to be a problem, but the low GOEs surprised me. Hopefully they can do a clean competition at the GPF and gain some good marks there. They have the goods to finish on the podium, for sure. It will be important for the evolution of their scores, but RN is the competition to do good at.

The GPF will also be the another battle for the #3 on the team, because I don't see T/M out of contention. P/K and M/G will fight for that spot.

It will be interesting whom the judges will reward more P/K or M/G if both skate clean in GPF.
M/G should be ahead technically

I like Mishina/Galliamov, but I think their PCS are more than fair in comparison to Moore-Towers/Marinaro. I don’t think the “Je Suis Malade” SP really fits them (they don’t feel connected to the music IMO; they don’t have the drama like when Weaver/Poje skated to it). The free skate is better, but I think they just need another year or two to step up the artistic side. Boikova/Kozlovskii improved artistically this year, so I think M/G can do the same. For a pair to make the GPF in their first senior season is quite impressive indeed.

Congrats to M/G to get to the final.. I don't think they didn't get the PCS they deserve ( it's there first season... ) what I don't agree is the GOE in the throws of M/MT and maybe they were a little push to get to GPF ...

I liked E/K programs ... They are improving ... and if they can skate clean they will be on the mix for the fight for 3 place

T/M won't go the final ... That gives them time to improve without a lot of travels in between .. the only problem of that is if for a some reason S/H fails and Boikova and Dima wins ... if that happens I think T/M will be in trouble in nationals to keep there nº1 position ... in the other scenarios they will continue (yet) to be a number one team..

will The french pair be at europeans?

That is my gripe with their scores: I think they were slower in Japan than at IdF, and they have to work on that so their PCS overall can go up, but their GOE in comparison to other teams was really low. Had they competed like this in IdF for example, I wouldn't doubt they'd have scored above 144+ in the FS, at least. Their faces in the KnC said it all.

I find both of these teams a bit lacking performance wise, but M/G have better elements. So, I think they will score better than P/K. At the GPF, Sui/Han (obviously) look solidly gold. B/K are likely silver ( unless Peng/Jin nail their side by sides) and Peng/ Jin are likely to be third. (they will have higher PCS , which they deserve)

I think MT/M, M/G and P/K will only factor into three medals if the other teams have a serious error or two.

I actually don't agree that M/G were underscored in GOE or PCS at NHK. A found all of their elements a bit messy in comparison with some of their previous outings. MT/M may have been overscored but M/G weren't underscored.
