Still shaking my head about the Men’s World Champs selection process. I think it would a good idea for SC to make a statement as to how they selected Keegan over Roman. No offence to Keegan. It has been too many disappointments for Roman beyond his control when he has shown he is our strongest candidate.... now and in the future. What about the benefit of the doubt given to others named to the team? Just sayin. I know Men’s is only one spot to fill but didn’t Nam and Keegan get us in this position? More benefit of the doubt. SMH.
Why would you think Roman is the strongest candidate? Other than winning Nationals, his international placements last season were pretty bad. In his 5 skates his scores were 200, 204, 222, 247 and 260. Other than his one good skate at Nationals (260 score but with domestic scoring), he hasn't proven he can replicate that success on an international stage. He had a chance to show he could do it at 4CC and that's where he came 16th (Nam 6th, Keegan 8th) with a score of only 200 (40-50 points behind Nam and Keegan). He did well in the virtual challenge but that's skating in his home rink and not international competition, also Keegan wasn't able to participate in it since he trains outside Canada so we don't know how they would compare (although Keegan's score at Skate America was higher than Roman's challenge skate). Sure, Nam and Keegan lost the second spot, but Keegan and Nam's poor skates at Worlds still scored 237 which is still better than 3/4 of Roman's international scores from last season. Don't get me wrong, I like Roman and he shows a lot of potential but I think it's pretty obvious why they didn't send him when Olympic spots were on the line.
as we would no longer be able to blame officials... but it would also mean that we could as fans, really get behind our favourite skaters and cheer for them and follow them extra hard at each event they would participate in... It would be a much more positive experience all around... I mean, this would also benefits countries ... for instance, if the skaters had to earn their own qualification throughout the season, we might have seen 3 korean ladies, and Young You may have earned her spot through her international results... instead of being sidelined for having a bad event at her home nationals... etc
