Possibly c) Japanese coaches not wanting to teach non-Japanese skaters (administrative issues or because of the language barrier) could also be a reason.
Regarding b), Young You and Vincent Zhou don't speak Japanese and they are (or were) coached at least partly by Hamada for a bit (pre-COVID of course). It's understandable that young skaters might be reluctant to uproot to a foreign country for training, but maybe a short 1-2 month training course (e.g. working on the ladies' triple jumps) could be a more appealing option. Skate Canada might be more willing to help with a) in such a case too.
There are lots of skaters without fluent English that seem to be doing fairly well training in North America (e.g. Hanyu, although he's improved over time). Of course they're putting in a lot of effort to learn the language and may have interpreters or family members as support, but it might also be down to the coaches themselves being open to the idea and to adapting their communication style (verbal or otherwise). Some Western skaters have also trained abroad at times (e.g. Weaver/Poje in Russia for a little while, because Morozov is a nomad) or Tiffany Zahorski (she speaks many languages but Russian wasn't one of them before she moved there). But as you hinted, it's different for singles compared to dance/pairs, who tend to be more mature age-wise and have each other for company.
The 2021 Canadian Tire National Skating Championships are still scheduled to take place in person in Vancouver, B.C., at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre. However, the event will now take place on February 8 – 14, 2021. The number of competitors has been reduced to accommodate safety protocols. Only junior and senior categories will compete, and each discipline will only have two flights of skaters. More details surrounding that event will be available later this year.
4everchan, If only two flights of skaters are allowed, doesn’t this mean only 12 skaters for ladies and men? Just wondering if Mallet did qualify? She is one of my favourite Canadians and I’m not sure if she has qualified for Nationals or not.

Am I missing something here? Aren’t we waiting for the Challenge results, still to be skated, to see who the top 8 pairs & dance teams to advance and respectively the top 12 women and men to advance? Unless you are wondering if there is a limit from sectionals who advances to Challenge?

challenge hasn't happened yet... well the judging of it... the filming has happened or is ongoing... Veronik had a bye at sectionals... so maybe, (we haven't seen the programs), she was just doubling jumps and running through things anyways.... who knows... but she would not be trying 3a in harness with an injury so we can remain hopeful... we will find out in mid-january if she is going to be at Nationals or not.

challenge is getting filmed right now, that's correct. It's 8 pairs, 10 dance teams and 12 women and 12 men... we will have live streaming of the live judging of the pre-recorded programs in mid january.
Ok. Phew! Sorry to scare you. I didn’t know about this Challenge results part. I thought since they skated sectionals already, that that was the last performance result used to select the athletes that qualify for Nationals. I can’t wait to see the Challenge results.

As others has mentioned, the filming for Challenge has started. The judging (for all programs) won't happen until January.Are Challenge qualifications happening right now?

Skaters skate at a time and place agreed upon with Skate Canada and it is filmed at that time. They do the normal 6 minute warmup and get one shot at the program. It’s filmed by Skate Canada or an approved videographer so the filming is consistent to allow the judges the same viewpoint by which to judge the program. I have heard that all the pairs have now skated and have been filmed. Judges will view the skates for the first time when streamed as per the posted schedule and provide a score and placement just as if they were rink side. If will be interesting whether it comes across seamlessly or not. I suspect they learned a few things in that first try at streaming for sectionals except that the judging wasn’t done in real time for sectionals. There won’t be any kiss and cry and you won’t see the skaters faces when they receive their marks of course but what will be really strange is the fact that the competitors will probably be sitting at home watching themselves compete and waiting to hear the results of not only their skate, but of the other skaters as well. Certainly a strange situation I agree, but it will be a taste of competition for all of us who are missing it so.But what about the schedule on Skate Canada website? yes... i think kevin reynolds tried that one too... but i don't think anyone has ever done 4t-3l-3l or even 4t-3l

hopefully Jo secures the 4t-3loop and includes it in competition... the problem with 4t-3l-3l is that it would lower potentially his base value...if i am not mistaken, his repeated jumps were 4t and 3lutz... now it would mean his repeated jumps are 4t and 3loop... the rules of this sport sometimes just are against progress which is unfortunate...
