I think the award for most pieces of music used in a program goes to the choreographer of Elizaveta Medvedeva's FS. :slink:

Zhilina landed 4T! And also skated clean! I still feel like this program needs more polishing, it's not bad, but could be better.

Though Akatieva had trouble with her ultra-c elements, I was actually kind of impressed by this program. Sure the StSq needs more work, but the selection of "Reflection" felt surprisingly suitable. Also I was super impressed with how much speed she had going into 4T and 3A, I think part of the reason she didn't land 4T perfectly is because there was too much speed. Her jumps are pretty good actually. They kind of float off the ice and I never feel worried about whether or not she'll land them.

I also liked the music choice! Particularly, because Mulan was supposed to have a live action premiere this year, and went straight to Disney+, so with this program I kind of feel like that there's some justice done to a wonderful cartoon. It was a joy to watch! Sonia was very elegant and light.

Shame on 4T and 3A, but she looked quite confident with them in warm ups, so maybe she just got a little nervous.
Anyways, a well deserved winner.

I absolve Sofia of her mistakes in the first half of her program due to unbearable music, the later part is very nice and so was her skating.

Just finished watching! Some thoughts:

Muravieva: She looks more polished than at test skates. Still a little frantic but way more refined, she actually holds some of her movements now. Still - the program might be a bit too much for her overall. I liked the ending but other than that, it looked like she had to constantly fight to stay on top of the music. Rather stressful to watch, tbh. Also, on a shallow note: not a fan of the costume. It looks like someone ripped out parts of Usacheva’s last season and replaced them with glitter to make it less noticeable lol. But, to end on something positive: good job on saving some of those combos! Needed some thinking on her feet and she did it. Well done!

Zhilina: That 4T! After she started with a 2A instead of a 3A, I thought “well, okay, it‘s early in the season, maybe at a later competition“ and then she goes around the corner and lands a quad - and so easily too! The set up didn‘t look like a traditional quad set up either. Very impressive - though her landing still looks dangerous to the ankle, I must say. Her other jumps are also pretty nice - I‘ll join the appreciation thread for the 3Lz. Good technique. :) Beautiful spins too. However, artistically, I wasn‘t impressed at all, tbh. The program seems okay, though nothing special and I see Rozanov has picked up quite a bit of the Gleikhengauz school of choreography (that 0.5 second Ina Bauer hurt my eyes...). Ah, what can you do. Also, I feel like Zhilina herself doesn‘t connect with the program or audience at all. She‘s completely focused on the technical stuff and it shows. But it‘s early in the season and she‘s so young - she has time. Still a remarkable job to pull herself up to second overall after that short yesterday.

Berestovskaia: I don‘t understand how she didn‘t get the highest PCS by a wide margin! She‘s so charming and quite a lot of fun to watch. That quad looked more like an underrotated triple, though, and her other jumps are quite small, too. Maybe work on getting more height and power before attempting a constantly URed 4T would be better...

Akatieva: She won - no surprises here! I have no idea whether I like the program or not. I was kind of both weirded out and intrigued. I also felt she connected less to the music than yesterday. But it does have potential and she has something about her skating that makes it really nice to watch. Maybe it’s the way she moves across the ice - it’s very light and effortless. She struggled with her ultra c elements but her other jumps were secure and well done. Overall quite the impressive shape to be in, so shortly after quarantine.

I missed her - what was her program?

The whole last group proved to be pretty strong (maybe apart from Sultanmagomedova), but while we could expect that from the first three (Sofia, Veronika and Liza), Maria Zakharova and Sofia Muravyyeva are nice surprise.

Veronika is second. Good for her.
But did Sofiya really deserve the first place? She made big mistakes. Plus her 4T was with an excessive pre-rotation and her yesterday 3A was underrotated.

So great to see Zhilina get redemption today! That quad toe looked SO easy, I was not expecting it at all. She looked much more sure of herself today which was great to see. I'm not sure how I feel about Samson and Delilah for her, but it is the first outing of the season so I'm intrigued to see how the program grows throughout the year.

I actually enjoyed Mulan for Akatieva. I didn't like the middle part where the music gets really heavy, but the sections with Reflection were quite nice. Some issues with her big elements today, but again, it's the first competition of the season so I'm not too worried. Also, that dress is stunning! Love the color on her.

Berestovskaya also had issues with the quad, but the rest of her program was really nice. I do prefer her short program but she still performs this one really well! Love her costume as well. :luv17:

Someone earlier mentioned that Muravyova was working on a quad salchow, and that was definitely a placeholder triple at the beginning of her program. It'll be interesting to see if she puts the quad in this year. I also prefer her short program, but she looked much more refined compared to test skates.

It was so nice watching this competition. Didn't watch everyone yesterday, but watched the last 2 groups today. I'm sooo excited that competition season is back. I needed it so badly!

I missed her - what was her program?

Not sure about exact names of the music, but a bit of some Japanese traditional music, a bit of Yuzu's Seimei (actually more like parts of Seimei but chopped and slapped together), then some more traditional music, then a part of the ending of Sasha's Fifth Element (2018/19 FS), then something that reminded of Zhenya's step sequence of MOAG....

I agree, it‘s so surreal but so amazing to finally see skating again. Can‘t wait for test skates!!

Also, what is that program. I‘m sorry - and no offence to the skater - but that must be the most bizarre thing I‘ve watched in a while. The music cuts were so random too like - who thinks of going from traditional music to 10 seconds of Fifth Element to traditional music again? It’s so weird it‘s almost great again. :laugh2:
