"Early career termination is inevitable, but not Tutberidze's problem." is the opinion of CSKA coach Sergey Davydov
A competitor to Khrustalniy in quads - more about the coaching style and short careers of figure skaters.
The second stage of the Russian Cup showed that this year it will not be easy for Eteri Tutberidze's wards to win start after start, as they have been doing for two years. Now the main threat comes from the ex-students of the best coach in the world, those who moved to Plyushchenko's Angels. But CSKA coach Sergey Davydov was the first in Russia to challenge Tutberidze in women's single skating. However, so far only at the junior level. His wards, Sof'ya Samodelkina and Yelizaveta Berestovskaya, raised by him, are jumping ultra-si elements and have learned quadruples. Samodelkina took first place in the Junior Test Skates of the national team in August, Berestovskaya on Tuesday won the Cup stage.
The 41-year-old mentor was born in Rostov-on-Don, left the Russian national team for Belarus, but could not rise higher than fourth place at the European Championship. His highest achievement - silver in the junior World Championship, again under the Russian flag in 1998.
The SE correspondent talked with Davydov about the coaching style, the attitude to the PR of competitors on Instagram and the strengthening of the content by his wards. Following a good tradition, after the cancellation of mixed zones, the conversation took place in the parking lot near Megasport.
There should be competition within the group. We have it peaceful
- Sergey, we can congratulate you on your victory. Are you satisfied with Liza Berestovskaya's performance?
- With quads it is difficult to skate the program further, but I am glad that she generally managed, although there were mistakes. At the training session before the competition, she did two quads, the program also worked out, but something else did not work out.
- You've probably heard skepticism in relation to her quadruple, they say, sometimes it is not rotated, and it is reduced to a triple ...
- This is such a delicate matter! If you watch the current video replays, which show jumps very well from different angles, then you can find faults with almost any landing. The bulk is at least q (under-rotation in exactly a quarter of a turn), there are only a few unclear and proper ones. It's a question for the judges, how they see it.
- Are you leaving the Kalinka-Malinka program for this season?
- At the stage in Moscow, she skated Kalinka, but we will go through two stages, and then we will think about changing. The main task, of course, is to qualify for the Championships. She, of course, grew out of this program. In principle, we started to change it, we even found the music and started to stage it, but then we thought that there were too many starts being cancelled. There is no time to stage the whole program exactly like that, and for her to break it in. We decided to change only the short program. And if everything goes well with the results, in the middle of the year we will stage the new free program. She will have a decent break before the Championships.
- So Kalinka is still a little childish?
- I agree, it is essentially childish, but it depends on how she skates it. If it is good and strong, this feeling will go away. "Polyushko-Pole" is also a folk song, she perform it and that's it.
- Why weren't you with Anna Frolova on the weekend? Tat'yana Tarasova said in the broadcast: "Maybe you got sick?"
- We just have a distribution system, we select which of the coaches and athletes is more comfortable with whom. Technical question. Anya is more comfortable with Aleksandra Kravtsova, she feels more comfortable with her. That's how we decided, you just saw the result. This does not mean that I did not want to go somewhere.
- Anna is now the formal leader of the Russian Cup. Need to strengthen her content for the championship?
- We are now learning a quadruple, proper and tight. While preparing for two stages, of course, the quad was put aside. It was necessary to skate, clean the connections. And now she has completed the task, and we will work on the quad.
- You have two rising stars in juniors, Samodelkina and Berestovskaya, Frolova is progressing. Already met with internal competition, which is much talked about in relation to other schools?
- We are always in favour of competition, so to speak. This is the engine of development, it just needs to be healthy. Girls are obliged to fight each other on the ice, but not outside of it. We always try to convey this. For now, I'll spit over my shoulder, we're all peaceful. Of course, they look at each other. Someone jumps more quads, the other says: "I still want to" And this is good.
- On the social networks it was discussed you didn't go to the summer training camp in Sochi and stayed with Sof'ya Samodelkina. Favouritism?
- I didn't stay with Sofa. I just had some family problems and I got delayed. We even bought tickets and were supposed to arrive in a week, but we were told that this was a violation of quarantine - either everyone would enter at once, or sit for two weeks. That is, without a chance, there was no choice. Sofa, too, could not go for family reasons. We agreed to work out with her for a week, leave her to work out a task with Yelena Germanovna Buyanova and then leave for Sirius, but it turned out like this.
We are not teasing anyone on Instagram. We have this position - mind your own business
- Do you position yourself as a tough coach or liberal?
- For some reason they tell me often that I am a tough coach. But I, of course, do not consider myself as such. Strict - yes. Without strictness in today's sport, especially in figure skating, you'll get nowhere. Athletes must clearly fulfill all conditions and tasks, which is achieved only through strictness. This is an adequate position of the coach; he simply demands a result from the athlete. We never have a checkmate in training, not a word, no one calls names, no insulting jokes, It is clear that the tone sometimes rises, but within the bounds of decency.
- If you see chocolate in the hands of a skater, what will you do?
- It depends on which skater. And depending on what kind of chocolate. There is black, bitter chocolate, which is healthy, but not tasty. The same Lisa can have some. They have a day off on which they are free to do whatever they want. The main thing is that everything is in normal proportions, does not harm the work process.
- Does the diet exist for everyone?
- Yes. Anyone who is thin should still eat right. He or she must choose the right diet, which is not like everyone else's, but should be right for them to exercise. This is very important.
- How many hours a week are you at the rink?
- Six days, about eight to nine hours, sometimes more. During the Russian Cup, I ran first to training at Megasport, then to CSKA, then to the competitions themselves, then back to the rink. Fortunately, it is close.
- Now they talk a lot about PR. Eteri Tutberidze presented her new agent on Monday, Yevgeniy Plyushchenko is obviously promoting his academy by all means. Are you for PR or a proper coach to whom figure skating is exclusively a sport?
- Of course, at the present time you need to think about promotion.
- You had a storyline with the quintuple jump of Maksim Belyavsky, which "took off".
- But we did not advertise on it in any way, it was just a coincidence. There was no purpose to inflate something unimaginable, especially jumping with support - this is a delicate moment, there was still a safety device. And we never counted on such a media rage. Correspondents called every day. At some point I said: "Maksim, we quit." You don't need this PR to overrun us.
- Are Instagram posts with jokes not your style?
- In general, we never tease anyone and do not lash out, we do not swear with anyone, we do our job. We post only about this and do not talk about someone else's activities. There is no purpose in telling that everything is bad for these people, and that everything is good for those others, we tell ourselves. Initially, we chose this position, and in principle I do not see another. You have your own business - and discuss it. For everything else, there are judges who will say who is bad where.
Our refereeing has a rating system
- How did you like the refereeing in Moscow? Let's follow your logic - could Frolova have gotten more?
- If she skated better. Anya made her mistakes, she knows about them. In the short program, she somehow managed to confuse herself on how to exit when she arrived at one of her jumps, I got scared. The consequences of anxiety that disorients a person ....
You will gain experience, you will learn to find your bearings using the boarding, and everything will be fine. She didn't finished the rotation yet. There are a lot of these little things that then add up to the assessment. We talk about this a lot. She performs the basic level, lands her jumps upright, but everything else needs to be done now with a 'to and from' for those big pluses. We explain this often.
- Are there
mushrooms in Russian figure skating (undeserved markups from judges)?
- I don’t think there are any
“mushrooms”. But there is a rating policy, some skaters have earned a certain rating, reputation, but they did it with their own labour. Therefore, they get a little more than the others when performing the element in about the same way.
- Have you ever heard whistling at the judges in a competition?
- Yes, I didn't really hear them here either ... True, I just watched the broadcast. But there was still no whistling in the same sense as in soccer or ice hockey. So I cannot comment.
My students were invited to other schools. But for now we hold on to them
- Until recently, you were almost the only competitor of Tutberidze in quads. Then Yelizaveta Tuktamysheva jumped them, but now another school has appeared, which is clearly competitive. Wouldn't it be difficult for CSKA to survive in conditions when the financial and infrastructure capabilities of the opponents are stronger?
- You know, this is closely related to the topic of children's transitions. You can't be all sweet on this. If a person wants to go to a place where there is more finance, as Trusova and Kostornaya did, they will go, and you cannot hold them back. I'll make a reservation since I don't know the whole background, but it looks like they were offered more favourable terms. In this case, everything is from within the athlete, it turned out that she didn't like something - she moves away and leaves. There is nothing we can do.
- You were approached?
- No. (Smiles.) Everything suits me in my current school, CSKA creates all the proper conditions for me. I am not interested in anything else.
- But your charges were definitely approached, and not from one school alone, as far as I know.
- They were. But ... we're holding on to them for now. And we will hold on, I think.
- On the moral and strong-willed?
- Why strong-willed? You just have to come and do the work. If a person is interested, wants to achieve something, he does not think about anything else. Where do these thoughts come from? When problems start. We also talk a lot about this. Yes, it can be hard. But you have to endure, and it is easier to endure together.
- Were there cases when a person came and said: “That's it, I'm leaving". Are you discouraged?
- Yes. Anya Tarusina left figure skating last year, however, not to someone else. She came and said: "I can't take it anymore." We said that we must go through this difficult time, everyone has them, and then everything will fall into place. She hesitated for two weeks, came, left, then told - I am quitting. I remember, they wrote a lot in the press, they say, we were unable to hold on to her. What can we do? Should we keep her by force? The person made a decision.
- Well, yes, there is life outside of figure skating. Do we overestimate its role at all? Sometimes it seems that children are kept in it artificially.
- I don’t know, we have a small group of 2013-2014 borns, I look at them - most children want to go to figure skating themselves. They walk in with such a desire! I see that the parents are almost not involved in the process. Our parents are not allowed to enter the skating rinks. That is, they bring their child to the door and that's it, a person continues to live his life. And here their individual qualities are manifested, and not the desire of their parents, when they brought them by the hand, put on their tights, stroke their heads after training, offer a sandwich. No, here they are here on their own. They are already tying the skates themselves. And what is wrong - you know how to tie sneakers, but not skates? If you tie it loosely four times, it will work out for the fifth.
- I have read on the Internet that you allegedly do not really recognize psychologists. True?
- No, there is no such thing. I recognize psychologists, they can correct some nuances, they need to be trusted. But I am against the globalization of their role. If a person is worried at a performance, it is very difficult to overcome this barrier. I had acquaintances - training champions, worked with three psychologists, then they left - and everything was useless. It shouldn't be so that if go to a psychologist - he will teach you how to perform.
I bow to those who can tolerate the flow of a known substance on the Internet
- Probably a wildly familiar question, but maybe something has changed. What is the key to the success of quads?
- Everything is standard - the number of performances, preparatory exercises. But it is not enough to learn it, the main thing is that it requires constant support. The musculoskeletal system works at such a limit that it is necessary to constantly keep it on the proper weight. This is more important than just being able to jump. Many people know how now. And when you loose the jump - you have to start all over again.
- Until now, from Eteri Tutberidze, the coach who taught quads, people left early. Would you be offended if your students leave at 17?
- I understand, this is inevitable, and not a question of Tutberidze or someone else. If we talk about girls, they start to grow up, get heavy and become slow. And what is a quadruple? It is maximum speed and lightness. A little heavier - everything goes away. Then you start losing. It’s very hard to endure your defeats. On the fingers of your hands you can count the people who skated in 10-12 events, becoming champions. Tuktamysheva, Leonova come to mind
- But Yelizaveta has endured, now she is again in the race for the national team.
- Honour and praise to her. I only admire such athletes who can tolerate the flow of a known substance on the Internet. Not everyone is ready for this, and you become obsolete, because young people arrive and they beat you. To the same Anya, we tried to explain that no one throws her out because right now something is not working out.
- That is, you admit that the same Samodelkina has only four years left in sports?
- They all have the same problems, a little weight gained - it becomes difficult. We sit down and talk. And there will be problems, it is not always rosy. For some, performances depend on the season. So everything is aimed at showing that the main thing in sports is patience. In general, we talk a lot, but we try not to overload the brain. (Laughs.) Those who are older, probably, we can already give some more room sometimes. But all the same, everyone must do a certain amount of work, this is our rule.
Valiyeva has already begun to grow and mature
- The main event of the last stage of the Russian Cup iwas the confrontation between Trusova and Valiyeva. It seemed that Kamila was affected by the pressure of senior competitions, to which she was not used.
- I just think that Kamila began to grow up and take shape. Yes, she is 14 years old, but all children grow up differently. This is not a question of psychology, Kamila is a staunch athlete. In general, all the girls were great, they go to complex elements after such a break. We forget about it, many say - yes, it was already long ago. But it is still reflected in them, they had to catch up on such a vacation that lasted this long long.
- Troika Trusova - Valiyeva - Usachyova - on track?
- For me, it's more of a deuce in the case. We say that these girls went to quads, trixel and did completely different programs. And the difference is minimal. In my understanding, there were two people of about the same level, and Dar'ya is a fine person, she skated great, there are no questions. And this is even without ultra-si.
- For you, it turns out, technology is primary?
- In today's figure skating, everything is important, from the quad to the steps sequence. If you begin to lack in even the slightest, you will lose victories.
