Iirc He had trouble with the triple loop the last season when he was doing Carmen. But after the break of a season and then this new one, it seems to me he’s landed it every comp until this one (although none looked effortless). But here he was clearly winded through most of the program, and trying to throw those triple axels in didn’t work like it did at RusNats (I think that’s when it was).

We just saw a combo where he did a triple axel as a second jump in practice, right? Those look so cool.

Forgive me if I haven’t gotten all the details right.

Btw, the YouTube (or is it a TikTok) of his perfect form in the triple lutz and it ends up in the Louvre is hilarious!

With the retirement of Sergei V. an era of Russian men's figure skating came to an end. Now I'm feeling old too (though I keep telling myself that I was just really young when I became a figure skating fan :ROFLMAO: ). So glad that we have a new generation of sometimes brilliant, sometimes disastrous, but always exciting young Russian guys to watch and cheer for!

So for the second worlds spot we have
- Aliev, who was robbed of his chance to go there last year. He had a rough start to the season and was plagued by illness, but came back solid in the Channel One Cup.
- Ignatov, always exciting to watch when his jumps come together for him. He has big scoring potential but stamina issues in the second half of his programs.
- Kondratiuk, who burst onto the scene this year with inspired performances at Russian Nationals and the Channel One Cup. I just rewatched his FS at Nationals and he performed well under pressure and was a joy to watch. (The joy was spoiled a bit when the little insert cut from the coaches cam to the green room cam, showing poor Andrei Mozalev, who looked like he was either going to burst into tears or throw up at any moment - or both). A little over a month later, Mark even managed to up his tech for the team event and delivered a nearly flawless FS again.
- Mozalev, who is the reigning world junior champion, but had consistency issues this season. He would also have big scoring potential if he kept his cool. (Plus he would definitely be the cutest competitor at worlds...)

Depending on where Gumennik is at this point, and if Danielian gets in, I think they are as much in the mix as Mozalev and the other guys, though Aliev is and Ignatov are probably a notch higher in the body of work...

Oh dear, I completely forgot about those two. :palmf:
- Gumennik, bronze medal winner at Rostelecom. He was injured prior to Nationals which impacted his skates there, but has everything to come back strong at the Cup Final.
-Danielian, winner of the silver medal at last year's Europeans. He had to sit out the season so far due to injury but is now back in training. Will he show up at the Cup Final and steal the show?

I wish each and every one of these guys to succeed so much! On the one hand I will be happy for whomever gets the elusive second spot to worlds, the down side is that my heart will break for the rest of them... :drama:

He was trying that quad toe-triple axel for the jump competition, but it didn't pan out on the day. It's a cool combo, but I'm not sure if it is practical. It would be another way to put the triple loop back in a four-quad program, tho. ( 4T-3A, 4Lz, 4S, 4T, 3A-3T, 3Lz-Eu-3S, 3L)

And the loop is a jump he needs until that four-quad program. He can't do a flip that successfully.
 
I would have the third spot between Ignatov, Kondratiuk and Aliev, unless one of the others is really great at the Cup final. Ignatov and Kondratiuk were the top two non-Kolyada men both at Nats and Channel 1, and Aliev has the experience.
 
I mean even if Petr won the Russian Cup Final, which is not highly likely unless he puts out two clean skates, RusFed wouldn't send him. He didn't even do badly at nationals and they scored him like dirt, I still can't believe Samarin who didn't land a quad beat him. When he delivers, he definitely delivers, as he showed he can score 96 in the SP with one quad, but he is inconsistent and he had that back injury (it wasn't anything major though). So I really don't know who they should send. I'd probably say Mark, since he has been on an upward spiral since he scored 90 in the SP at a small comp in October, and given his performances at nationals and channel one cup which have been a huge boost in his confidence. But he has no experience in big international competitions and isn't worlds going to be held without an audience, so what if he bombs..
Makar is a safer bet in terms of experience but he always loses stamina in the second half of his programs and doesn't have the greatest spins and step sequences. His quads are real money jumps though and he has the most consistent 4Lo. And then there's Aliev who hasn't been as his best after COVID but I wouldn't count him out
 
the second spot is really anyone's guess. I wish it was for one of my three favs, Dima, Petr and Artur but odds are against all of them. :(

Dima has been plagued with back injury, then lost a lot of training time because of catching covid. He is still clearly not 100% and probably better to focus on rebuilding his condition.
Same for Artur, he hasn't even competed this season and he went through a major operation, it would be wise to just focus on the next season.
Poor Petya doesn't seem to have much love from the federation, nor the judges :cry: He can hit the lutz but then has the tendency to unravel afterwards. For the consistency's sake I would say leave it out and concentrate in other elements, especially solid 3As and his trademark combination with a loop, which is an absolute butter. He needs to go absolutely clean if he has any chance of getting a decent mark from the judges. Hopefully by next season he will learn to maintain his composure after the big lutz for the rest of the program.
At this point I would say it is fair to give it to Mark K., he has been delivering when it matters, let him ride on the momentum.

Of course there is still Russian Cup Final and we must see what happens there. My main hope is that they will send the strongest and the most consistent at the moment who will earn 3 spots for Russia for the next season.

With Gumennik it's also not clear how his back injury is going. Which makes him an even less likely candidate.
 
Seeing twits that Kolyada is going to the Challenge Cup instead of the final, so will be interesting to see how he would perform in an international comp.

Yes, he's on the list for Challenge Cup. There's 20 men on the list at the moment (but that can still go down), so should be interesting. Mourisi is also on there.
 
I am still skeptical about Mark at worlds. Obviously has the potential to be amazing and maybe even win a medal, but also potential to bomb and lose spots. If he makes it clean at the final then send him, but with an international competition in between. This is a huge risk as opposed to Ignatov, who is 99% likely to be in the top 10 vs Kondratiuk who can be 50% top 5 or 50% out of top 10

He already did one earlier in the season in Minsk. Historically he never did well in comps at this time of year.

Ignatov is 14 in seasons best. I'm not so sure why you think he is guaranteed to be top 10. He has even more potential to bomb in my opinion

I feel like that statement can be made in regards to every Russian male skater.

Probably doesn’t guarantee him top ten finish however, particularly atm when jumps are starting to get scaled back in terms of scoring vs PCS/spins. It is, however, always a joy to see Ignatov. 🌹
