2020 Cup of Russia: Stage I

Yeah.. It would be a good skill to have I know.
Part of the issue is my LD. I took french for years and years at school. Long after I didn't have to because I really, really wanted to be fluent but it's a huge struggle. I still see letters backward sometimes and was always told other languages would be an issue.
I'll just try and memorize the names. I have a pretty good memory like most dyslexics. It's how I spell. I can't do phonetics.
I totally get it. I started to learn it unintentionally when I was watching videos and realizing, "Oh, that's what Anna Pogorilaya's name 'looks like'".

Not that everyone has the time or the bandwidth for this, but it didn't take me too long to teach myself the basics of Cyrilic. I don't speak any Russian, but I can read names and figure out competition schedules, which really helps!
I agree. Doesn’t take much time at all. I taught myself that as a kid to be able to read the names of my favourite hockey players. Besides, looking at the names in most cases is self-explanatory.

It's a national competition. I wouldn't expect the calling to be as harsh as at a grand prix or an international one. You probably don't want to embarrass your own skaters in public. My guess is that if a skater is under or on a wrong edge the coaches know it and deal with it in training.

I've certainly seen it at national events that include countries that include Russia and others. The Japanese seem to be alone in calling their own skaters harshly.

May I add that our judges are usually salty as hell, our skaters get less points in domstic competitions than international ones

That’s a different cattle of fish. Now I know where you’re coming from. Good point well made. 👏

Canadian judges lose their minds and give all the points and US judges practically anoint their skaters with oil.
I think honesty is the best policy.
If the lifts suck and the twist is bad tell them already. If a jump is a zero and you give it a 3 it's a lie.
I actually prefer the Japanese (and I guess Korean) approach but that's me. It's how I'd feel as a skater. I'm not a blow smoke kind of person.

Don’t think I’ve been looking forward to a Junior FD event that much in ages!!!! It’s been superb yesterday and I can’t wait to see the cuties on the ice again!
Good luck and healthy skates to all! I hope Serov is doing okay ❤️🤞
