The field has never been this deep. There were strong teams at the top, but the last warm-up of nationals used to consist of unexperienced teams from small cities. In the Olympics season they didn't even manage to fill entries.

There is a similar trend on the international scene. At last Worlds there were more ice dance teams than women.
