2020 World Championships Cancelled

It's very disappointing, especially for the skaters who worked so hard to qualify for these Worlds, but it was a wise decision in light of the worldwide coronavirus outbreak.

Really? It would be better to skate, even without audience, IMHO. Most skaters are used to it anyway.. ;)

sorry, I live in the Schengen region... with the mention of Brexit, I thought some people did not understand Schengen.

i'm really afraid how this will affect the olympics this summer...i read they have to make a decision whether or not to cancel i think by the end of May. that will be here in no time, and i'm afraid things are only going to get worse.

missing a world championships is devastating, but imagine having the only chance in your entire athletic career to compete at an olympics taken away- the reality for many. that is life changing.

Well, according to Expedia, nothing is refundable for me, except maybe for one of the two hotels. Air Canada cancelled my first flight back in December and I had to book an extra night in a different hotel because of the changes... so, yeah, I am going to see if talking to them will help me get something for the flight. But it doesn’t look good in terms of potential for refund. It says if you cancel or change for any reason, it’s not refundable. Any reason probably covers present situation.

I have changed the title to "Postponed" as that is what is currently on the ISU site. Here's holding out for a small miracle!

We're now looking at changing our Air Canada flights to take us to and from Ottawa in October/November instead, to go to Skate Canada. Seems better than just losing them. We really want to salvage something from the situation.

I still can’t get through, it’s been 3 hours so far. Once in a while My Way comes on in the on hold music, makes me think about B/K lol.

That is absolutely terrifying. I hope that since the US has a head start and at least a week or two to prepare, we won't reach such a point where doctors have to choose who lives and dies. But with our current administration I sure don't have much confidence that we will be prepared.

A head start???? We didn’t even have test kits.

This might sound dumb, and I'm not losing any sleep over it, but I kind of still want the fan bag that I ordered. :) Does anyone know if there will be an option to have them shipped? I mean, what are they going to do with all that stuff? I know they have bigger fish to fry right at this moment, but it's just something I'm wondering about.

Also, an email from Evenko with a timeline/explanation on refunds would be nice. I can't believe they haven't ever issued refunds for cancelled events before and don't have a known procedure in place.

I too wish the competition was going on behind closed doors. I have time off from work next week and would have loved to curl up on the sofa with my cat and some tea to watch it.

Please tell me it doesn't mean they won't be tested/isolated. US govt and society can't be that suicidal.

Probably not a good idea to get caught up in hypotheticals now. The US has a track record of being able to catch up after being behind during a crisis. Once the testing becomes more available and logistically viable I have no doubt they will implement them on the largest scale possible to as many as they possibly can. It may take a little extra time to catch up but freaking out and possibly causing panic and stress among people is of little help.

I was thinking of 2011, when Moscow managed to organize a rescheduled WC with just a few weeks of notice. Plus in mid April, hopefully the virus scare will have been largely toned down by then. So I had thought the option of postponed WC couldn't be ruled out. Finding the available venue of appropriate size would be a challenge. Trying not to get over-excited but I would like to remain positive!

Oh no, I just looked at the article. it says the rescheduled WC won't be possible any time before October 2020 :eekn: How will that be possible????? That will already be into 2020-2021 season!!!! Are they out of their minds????:palmf:

Someone already mentioned it, but the NHL rink in Ottawa will be available and suitable for the event.

Unknown. It will probably mean many of them don't seek medical care because of the cost, although hopefully most will self-isolate. My husband and I have very bad insurance and I'm going to give serious thought in the next few days to how we'll handle things if/when (likely when) we become infected. If we're hospitalized, it could cost us tens of thousands of dollars, and possibly several times that (I can't even fathom what a month-long ICU stay would cost). We're only one medical emergency away, as are most Americans, from decades-long financial disaster.

I'm being honest here--we do our best to be good citizens, so we'll swallow that cost. But I suspect there's a non-zero chance that many people won't.

I was really looking forward to seeing Ashley and Tim skate free and skate great and get a little redemption for a difficult season. (Also T/M, like Anonymoose). And looking forward to so many other skaters as well, too many to list.

Agree. I liked Meryl Davis's early tweet, offering encouragement to the competitors.

There may be no skate canada either. Apparently ISU said there will only one event in canada or the us. So we get either no skate canada or no skate america

"Hypotheticals"? Are you kidding me?
There are 1390 cases and 289 virus victims in US at the moment. Free testing and hospital isolation should have been introduced weeks ago already.

Sorry, I don't quite understand your system.
Let's say you don't have insurance, get severe flu symptoms: feel sick, high temperature, etc..
You don't have money for private medical visit, so you go to an emergency in nearest hospital and what happens there?
