Keegan was such a delight! :cheer2: After all the trouble he had gone through just to get to Beijing, he must have been ecstatic to deliver such a great SP!

Poor Roman, his Olympic dream has become a complete nightmare. :( With three extremely poor performances in a row and failing to qualify for the free skate, I wonder if SC will remove him for the Worlds team? Maybe I'm just exhausted from all the stress and my mind is now swirling with negativity, but that thought kept repeating itself after Roman popped the Lz into a single. SC may have more confidence in Nam at this point.

There’s a few other skaters who have their Worlds minimums that placed higher than Nam at nationals. I guess we will see how they do at Jr Worlds. I think they will keep Roman, they probably don’t want any more drama and keeping 2 spots isn’t as important this year. Although with covid we have seen how not keeping the spots can mess up later years.

I love Roman, he has so much potential but something just isn’t working. Maybe he needs a coach that better understands men’s quads? I don’t know. I wish Canadian skaters weren’t so afraid of leaving their coaches to go to one’s with more high level experience. Lambiel did wonders for Shoma’s consistency, he could use a coach like that. Poor guy. I hope he doesn’t take this Olympic experience too hard, it’s not his fault he was thrown into the team skate with no preparation. :(

I agree with most of what has been said here but I strongly disagree that Roman was thrown into the team event with no preparation. He has said "they told me to be ready for anything" and he always knew that there was a good chance that at least, they might be splitting men. Also, athletes are made to compete and to seize the opportunity. As a younger skater with less international experience in big events, that was a chance for him to build some confidence.
To me, the issue is mental preparation altogether but it is not about the team event or not. It's just Roman. He lacks confidence. He seems scared on the ice. It's been like this for quite a while. When he is on, he is awesome, and that's why we all give him so much love. However, there are tons of other guys who are waiting on the sidelines for the same opportunities and Skate Canada needs to field the ones who can handle the pressure. There are some candidates. Wesley for instance might be one of these guys who thrive under pressure.
Madeline certainly showed that she could deliver. Keegan did it too, with terrible circumsntances. At the beginning of his skate, he was breathing joy and happiness. It showed he was just happy to be there. He skated his best jumps in a long time. He didn't even have to save them. They were big and confident. This is the attitude needed at this level. Trust yourself. ENjoy the moment. I hope Roman (and some of our other skaters) can learn from Madeline and Keegan..

From what I recall, Wesley, Joseph and Corey do not have their TES SP minimum for Worlds (which is 34, six points higher than the TES SP minimum for the Olympics and 4CC), so Nam is next in line, and the only other candidate is Conrad. (There's also Nic, but he has retired from singles.) I really don't know what SC will do---Roman clearly cannot handle the pressure of a big competition, but Nam's entire season has been bad, and in the past, he has failed to qualify for the free skate at Worlds twice, while Conrad is untested at a big event like Worlds, and he had a disastrous SP at Nationals where he scored 59.13, which is even lower than Roman's 62.77 at the Olympics (and Nationals results are usually a bit inflated). So whoever SC chooses as the second man for Worlds, they may not qualify for the free skate.

I 100% agree with you that there's something is terribly wrong with how Roman prepares for a competition, and that drastic changes are needed. However, he seems extremely loyal to Tracey (I even saw the fluff piece with him and her last night on the CBC TV broadcast), so it appears highly unlikely that he'll switch coaches, unfortunately. I remember that Roman was briefly with Brian Orser when he was a junior-level skater, but he ended up going back to Tracey.

Yeah, it definitely looked like he was totally lost on the competitive ice and had zero confidence. I'm very familiar with Roman's doe-eyed "deer caught in the headlights" expression, and it was present throughout his Olympic performances. SC must be so pissed at him. I can easily imagine that if Roman remains wildly inconsistent throughout the next quadrennial, but somehow manages to become the national champion in 2026, SC would refuse to send him to the Olympics, just like they refused to assign him to the 2020 Worlds.

If Roman cannot improve his mental toughness soon, then obviously the younger guys will overtake him quickly. It could occur as early as next season.

yeah... it does now look like Skate Canada had some good reasons not to honour his 2020's win... do I recall properly that he was sent to 4cc and under delivered?

And we get back to the beginning : Skate Canada needs to nurture the talent better. They need to send them to more events !

Roman needs full support from all us Canadian skating fans right now. Not criticism. Cant imagine his own feelings/personal pressure as well as Tracey’s. He earned his place at the Olympics. He gave it his all but it was not to be. Full stop. We have all experienced these days but not as publicly. Let’s be kind❤️
Let him go home and give him his space. He literally has had no down time since he arrived.
As far as Worlds goes…. Skate Canada should tread lightly ……. They can’t take this away from him a second time after claiming the men’s title in 2020 and under performing here. He may choose to heal mentally and not go to Worlds ….. but it is his choice. Hopefully he jumps on the horse again soon. 💪

Roman is truly an amazing skater.

Support comes in all shapes and forms. What some people, including myself, are discussing is exactly support : suggesting he gets a break, some mental rest, a reset, is exactly that. I wouldn't remove assignments from him. However, I would make sure he is fit to compete. Mental health is very important too. Love is sent to Roman. Lots of it. It is heartbreaking that such a talented skater finishes in last place at the Olympics. Nobody would have ever seen that happening. So, there is obviously something that needs time and healing for him. It's not just one bad day at the office. It's a complete week of it. At this point, it's normal that some fans, and I am talking about myself, want to send him to a beach with a good book to rest and reflect. The last place I would want him to be right now, is on the ice trying to "fix" everything that is not working out for worlds in a few weeks. That's my opinion and it comes from a place of support.

Perfect 4everchan. Very eloquently scribed. We are supporting a human being not a robot. It’s for the love of our sport we support the ups and downs of the athlete’s.

You remember correctly: Roman finished a distant 16th, with Nam in 6th and Keegan in 8th, so of course that cemented SC's lack of faith in him. Imagine what they must be thinking now after what happened at the Olympics.

You won't find anyone on this forum who's more in love with Roman's skating than me (I checked the stats of Roman's Fan Fest, and I contributed 274 out of the 696 posts, by far the most of anyone there), and I didn't say that we should give up on him or anything like that. But I'm very worried that Skate Canada may give up on him. I'm sure the absolute minimum they would've wanted is for Roman to qualify for the individual free skate at the Olympics, but he didn't, so that doesn't bode well for him qualifying for the free skate at Worlds. I obviously have no idea what SC's plans are, but they can take away his Worlds spot if they feel that he's too unreliable (maybe they won't go that far, and I'm just anxious over nothing, but I wouldn't be surprised if they consider replacing him).

I've been Roman's fan long enough to know what a "normal" bad skate is for him, but what happened at the Olympics went FAR beyond that. I don't pretend to know what was going on in his mind, but that wasn't just a bad day at the office for him; that was something akin to a nervous breakdown. The CBC TV clip of him crying into Nikolaj's chest was just a tiny glimpse of how much he was suffering at these Winter Games. I'm extremely concerned about his mental state, and I sincerely hope he gets the help he needs so that his nightmarish experience at the Olympics doesn't occur at Worlds, or any other future competition in his career. If Roman is unable to find a solution for his issues with high-pressure situations, SC will give him the cold shoulder and promote the younger generation.

^^ this ! Yes... I feel the same @siberia82 though I am not Roman's biggest fan : that's you :) I sometimes wonder why Conrad doesn't deliver either but I have never felt as much sorrow as when watching Roman's heartbreaking interview. Sometimes, when one wants things too much, a dream can become a nightmare. No matter what the future holds for Roman, this will be a life shaping experience that I hope he can learn from and grow even better as a human being and athlete.

Theoretically, if Roman did change coaches, where would he go?
Roman did try Orser before and went back to Wainman.

I would suggest Nic's coach (and of course the one who trained Joseph too) because he knows what to do with tall and bigger guys. Yvan Desjardins. Yvan is 5'9 himself, which is quite tall for his generation of skaters (mid 40s) ... Roman could then learn French :) and live on his own instead of at home. Sometimes, that helps too.. To discover who you are.
If not, maybe Ravi could do good things with Roman. What I would say is that most coaches would be very happy to have such a talented skaters to work with... but I still believe that no matter where he goes, he needs a sports psychologist first.

Yeah, it's only Keegan, Roman, Nam and Conrad with their full Worlds minimums. Wesley, Stephen, Joseph, Corey and Bennet all are a bit short on the SP one and have the FS. And Beres Clements has the SP but is well short of the FS.

Isn't there still time to get minimums? I think the US is doing that for Ilia. I'm not saying Roman should be replaced, but if there are still tournaments where they can get their minimum and experience, they should be sent. Especially with covid still a thing, the more that can qualify, the better.

Rumors are Kamila is at the centre of the delays in the team medal. If she has her skate removed from the scores I believe team Canada moves into bronze position. Crazy.
Now there's shadenfreud for you. If USA was moved up to gold because of this, I sure wouldn't feel good about it.
