I found an article about the future of Canadian men's skating: https://www.theobserver.ca/sports/o...ian-mens-figure-skating-post-beijing-olympics

Wesley, Joseph and Stephen are mentioned as the promising young talents, Michael Slipchuk appears to not have completely given up on Roman just yet despite the latter's abysmal Olympic results (so I guess Roman won't be losing his Worlds spot), and Corey is on the periphery because he's a very artistic skater, but currently quad-less.

yup.. i cannot wait for Emma and Nik to show up at competitions... I am very excited by this pairing...
You're getting Nik and Nic mixed up. ;)

I miss seeing Nic's skating, so I can't wait to see him as a pairs skater.

I couldn't help but notice that Nik and Roman were standing next to each other while cheering for Piper & Paul's RD, and the two men seemed to exchange a few words after the moment shown in this screencap. Since it was Nik who cradled Roman while the latter was sobbing after the TE FS, does this mean we might have a new bromance in Canadian skating (or at least Nik is treating Roman sort of like a younger brother)? Nik obviously didn't have to sit next to Roman after completing his RD (Nik could've chosen to sit next to Keegan on the lower level which is not included in this pic, for instance), so it looks to me that he wanted to keep Roman company.

Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part (I guess I just like the idea of Roman having a friendship that's kind of similar to what Nam and Keegan share), but if Nik and Roman did form a bond at these Olympics, then I think it's cute that these two have found common ground (at the very least, they're both the sensitive type and both have cried in front of a TV camera) despite the decade-wide age gap between them.

oh .. just a typo ;) both i blame their handsomeness :)
I totally agree that Nik and Nic's handsomeness is extremely distracting!

i guess Nik and Roman bonded over tears :) I wouldn't call it a bromance yet... an olympic fling? maybe ;) i could certainly imagine though, after having seen Nik's video where he cries a river, about pretty much how important it is for him to be at the games, his dream, and the journey to get there, that he would have a lot of empathy for a skater like Roman, whose olympic dream was "taken away" from him because of nerves or whatever the reason for his problems were...

CBC makes a big thing of the bromance between Nam and Keegan, and I sometimes wonder about Roman. But I do know that Roman has good / cordial relations with several other skaters. He did a podcast with Michael Marinaro and Trennt Michaud, and they seem very friendly. Roman spent many years competing on the JGP and roomed with Michael (a few times) and Trennt (many times). They tried to get him to say who he preferred as a room-mate, but he was too canny for them. I know everyone may be too busy for it right now, but Here's the link

That said, Nik seems to be a very kind person and Roman can use all the support he can get right now.

What do y'all think is Schizas' highest potential placing? I think that the positive exposure she received from the team event (both in Canada, as well as (I think) internationally) could be the bump she needed to push her into the upper echelon. That should give her a .5 boost in PCS I would think (rightly or wrongly - that's just how things work) regardless of how she skates, and that's worth a couple places. We could see her pushing into the low 8's, which would be great for her. I also think the experience was good for her confidence. While I don't love either of her programs, she threw herself into Madame Butterfly more than I've seen her in the past. Her facial expression and passion in the last 1/4 was vastly improved, and had to have come to a degree from all the positive reviews of her 'saving' the team event - along with having completed all her jumps cleanly too, of course :) But to me, it looked like she was taking herself seriously. Ie, I AM good, I'm convincing, I can do this!

I think she's a solid possibility for top 10 outside of the Russians, Japanese, Hendrix, and a couple Koreans. Of course, she could be mid to low teens as well, such is the level of competition. I could see best case of about 7-8 IF those above her make mistakes. I think top 10 would be fantastic for her, even 9-10.

Thoughts?

Nik really does have a big heart; I'd normally expect that Tracey would be the one to comfort Roman when he was crying, yet it was Nik who reached out to him first even though they didn't really socialize all that much before these Olympics (as far as I know). Roman still desperately needs to see a sports psychologist, but I'm glad that he appears to have one more friend/older brother figure in his skating social circle (along with the others that you've mentioned).

Roman and Nam also had their moment... Weren't they calling themselves RoNam at one point?

Yep.

RoNam's friendship was mentioned at the 1:40 mark of this video. Maybe it's just the way the media twists things around and it doesn't actually reflect what's going on, but I get the impression that Nam is closer to Keegan for the past couple of years than he is with Roman.

I think that she needs to deliver a great SP... and then her PCS boost may start ;) The issue with Canadian athletes is that their PCS boost takes forever to come compared to some others... and can be lost very quickly...

I think 8-10 is a realistic hope for her if she skates well.

not a great night for Canadian ice dance... Our 3 teams were tentative and had costly mistakes... I blame many things...

1) covid... our teams have not competed as much as some others.
2) the simple fact that the tech panel and judges have been... ermmm... conservative when it comes to rewarding our teams at the games. Which means that it adds pressure on them to skate perfectly well. I hope they do better at worlds.

I hope they do better at worlds.
I do, too, otherwise we'll go down to 2 spots for ice dance. This is our strongest discipline, yet it didn't feel that way tonight. Yet another issue to add to my growing list of worries since these cursed Olympics began...
