Ruiter could absolutely make the free skate.
Theoretically, I guess.
Could. That's what I mean. Ie, we don't have any other skaters with the skating skills or technical content to basically be a lock. Ie, even if she hits
everything, Kaia will be on the bubble. Still a junior in terms of content, performance, skating skills, choreography, etc. Don't get me wrong, I totally think she's the future... although the future is probably a generation behind her to be honest. I mean, Maddie has excellent skating skills and decent presentation when she's on. Her technical content is some of the best out there, theoretically, b/c she rarely underrotates, and even then it's due to nerves, and not a chronic thing like (eg) the US skaters or others.
And YET, even with a decent skate (for her) and 4 or 5 top skaters gone, she doesn't crack the top ten. Basically, skating is more competitive than it's ever been. EVeryone out there is fantastic and in order to shine you have to be ridiculously skilled - ie, Russian level.
So I get what you're saying, and I agree that Kaia's the only one who's close to the league, but in all honesty, it's not like she's going to fly in there and easily make the free. I suspect that a clean Kaia would still be on the edge of qualifying, probably in the high teens.
All this to say it's not as if Belgium has nobody, but Canada has tons waiting in the wings.
Although the Belgian skaters would still need their minimums, correct? If they don't get them, does that open opportunities for other countries to grab extra spots, like at Nebelhorn this year, or something like that?
