The ISU has nothing to do with it. As long as skaters are eligible, it's up to the individual federations - in this case the USFSA. Under the US selection criteria, winning isn't a guaranteed spot. It would certainly help her case though. I don't think they'd want to leave the National Champ off when there are 3 spots.
Winning without top scores elsewhere could only get you as high as Group 3. If they remain healthy and skate their best, it's possible that Alysa, Karen, and Bradie could achieve Group 2, and if they did they would have a stong argument to bump a Group 3 National champ based on the criteria. Personally, I wish there was some way to reward the champ with a bump ahead of the other medalists, but I guess the USFSA doesn't want to have to send the winner in situations where the USA has one spot and a favorite underperforms.

I said last year that Amber needs to WIN nationals. Then, as I understand it, under ISU rules, she must be selected for the Olympic team. If she nailed the 3A, (and everything else) this would be possible. It isn't as if we have a Valieva in the U.S. who stands to score 30 points over everyone else. Yes, I think Alysa will win, but only because she is unaffected by nerves and seems to go out and hit everything she has. But everything she has isn't as good as what Amber can do if she is 'on'.

I mean, yes. If Amber performed as she does in practice in competition, than she is better in almost all elements than Alysa. And, the judges want to reward Amber. She got very high PCS in both programs given how nervy her performance was.... People say that the judges wouldn't score her as well as some of the US skaters ( and that might be true nationally) but international judges like her. Her nerves are responsible for her placement not external factors.

That being said, I think if she does well at the GPs, the US fed will send her if she comes 1 or 2 at Nationals.

Karen is a beautiful skater but her 3-3 was as rotated as it has ever been in competition and it still got a q. Not to mention the edge call on her flip, and multiple UR calls from a lenient technical panel. However, she delivers when she needs to, to the best of her ability. This was Karen topping out her scoring potential.

Liu with two triple axels scored a 160 free skate at US Nats.

Can you just imagine what they would give her this time? Her score will be absolutely monstrous this year. It is not relevant if someone else has "bigger" jumps. That's what it was like two years ago and USFS certainly didn't care.
She would score even more now not just because it's a Olympic year either but because she is a way better skater then in 2020 when she was slow and had low quality jumps.

No senior GP has been held, 2 time champion Bradie has yet to skate, and its mid October. Lindsey hasn't earned anything to be on the Olympic team.
Yeah it’s… I can’t even. Lindsay hasn’t even skated in a major senior International event. She skated as a senior in last year’s Nationals and came in 6th and we are putting her on the Olympic team? It’s going to be a VERY long season. No shade on Lindsay, it’d be cool to see her follow up her Novice and Junior Nationals win, but it hasn’t happened yet. There are many skaters who have not been as successful as seniors as they were as juniors. Best wishes to all skaters.

Hopefully she can rotate and land her triple axel consistently. But even if she doesn't, as you mentioned, she would score well because she is way better now. She is definitely performing high quality skating currently, and that will score her well. Her PCS didn't score as high in the past, even nationally, it didn't hit 70 in her free. But she has shown beautiful improvement and much better skating skills.

I always like to say: form is temporary, class is permanent.

A few months ago, Karen Chen was “next.” But, she has gone backwards this year.

And it’s laughable to be calling anybody a lock for the Olympic team in October.

Alysa has been doing well this season, and although she has a super good chance of going, you are right in saying that there are not locks here in October. Karen seemed very off not too long ago, but she was fabulous at Finlandia, UR aside. We don't know what will happen, but it will be exciting to see, especially with the GPs starting soon.

Yes, this is 💯 correct, but if you haven't noticed this speculation about rankings, World's and Olympic's spots is what fuels posts on this forum in this thread and all the others! Everyone likes to give their opinion and opinions will swing wildly from one competition to another. 😂 😁 Of course, it's all pointless and ridiculous but posters here seem to enjoy it very much. Don't take away our fun!

The absolute last thing I want to do is take away your fun. I promise. Haha

I think we can both agree that if we both compete in US Nationals this January, we'll be making it ;)

(but, no, really, Alysa is a lock)
Haha, if I make it there is going to be an investigation, given that I can’t skate.
If I am the only entry at Nationals, I’ll finish second for sure.

That‘s why I’m typing this message about figure skating rather than taking part in it.

Barring injury, Alysa Liu is an absolute lock for the team. No other American woman skates as consistently and 'champion level' as she.
I think Alysa will DEFINITELY make it, unless she gets injured. She is off to a rocker start. She is one of those skaters that when she jumps, you don't feel worried that she will mess up (not mentioning her quad or triple axel). That shows her great consistency.

Nobody is a lock in Russia and Japan because they have way too many talents out there. On the other hand, USA ladies field is super "WEAK". There is only ONE US girl won gold this season so far. In fact, it's almost 100% sure that Nebelhorn cup is the LAST international gold for US lady this season. So far, Alysa had already fulfilled group #2 selection criteria set by USFSA, she just needs to be placed in top 5 at nationals and her spot will be official. Karen Chen is in group# 3 and Lindsay is in group#4 as of this moment. The only true US competitor remaining to be seen is Bradie. Can you think of any FIVE US girls who can beat Alysa at US nationals and bump her out of top 5? I just can't.

Yes, actually they all can if she isn't rotating her 3A. Her elements aren't superior to the other women. The real issue is, will they? Most aren't very reliable or particularly good competitors. Alysa is a superior competitor not a superior skater. Bradie might do it, if she is healthy. Her international PB is significantly higher than Alysa's.

What I mean is....all FIVE girls beat Alysa at the same time and bump her out of top 5. Alysa may not win Gold but I don't think she will be in sixth place and beyond. Alysa doesn't need to win GOLD to be selected for Olympics team, she just needs to be in top 5. That's why most of the people here think she is a lock.

Maybe we should wait until the top U.S. women have done at least one GP. It’s pretty early to declare the season over.

I also think she will very very likely make the team. I just don't think anything is impossible.
