The problem is she quite regularly has these "bad days" at competitions.
It's tough to know what she should do. She smartly replaced the 3F with the 3Lo in her SP, but if she struggles with her best jumps she really doesn't have many other options to accrue points. It seems she isn't able to go out and attack a program like we used to see from Michelle Kwan, and it's hard to see Gracie letting go of that hesitancy at this point in her career.

Results from Peggy Fleming are up! 1st Karen (73.28), 2nd Alysa (72.16), 3rd Isabeau (70.88) :) https://usfigureskatingfanzone.com/documents/2021/7/15/VPFT2021_Artistic_FS_Scores.pdf
I didn't familiarize myself with the rules of this thing, but I felt Alysa should have won. Alysa is looking strong and-FAST- (yes, FAST!) with terrific conditioning, solid confident jumps. The music was a bit overwhelming, but she was polished and is ready to compete this year. (Transitions...there were many many many transitions. lol)

Agree. Yes, fast, that's one of the biggest improvements she's made, and it's not fast without control. Hope she can skate as fast after inserting her ultra-c.

As background for those unfamiliar with the judging criteria for Peggy Fleming Trophy. Jumps are not important, in and of themselves, to the Peggy Fleming Trophy. Nor, in and of itself, is speed.:

The Nine Technical Elements:
  • 4 Jump elements (one Axel-type)
  • 3 Spin elements (one Creative Spin)
  • 1 Step Sequence
  • 1 Signature Move
Signature Move—A creative move/movement series, or an iconic skating move, jump or spin tailored to your creativity, personal style and strength.
Creative Spin—A spin of 6 revolutions or more created with unique positions and design, giving the skater creative identity without limitations of position and features.

Elements are judged for Skating Skills and Technique, Composition, Interpretation, Performance and Overall Artistic and Creative Value. Jumps have a fixed BV whether they are doubles or triples. Quads are not permitted.

The thread for the PFT:

Wow! Alysa Liu was breathtaking. Made Isabeau look really slow. Alysa’s program is amazing 😻
I think she can beat the other American Ladies without the ultra elements. She has slowly become my favourite American skater. She has really improved a lot.

Agree. I don't think she will even need it for Nationals. I don't think she will need it to WIN nationals.

Did you by any chance see her practicing for this event?

I wish there was a video of this because I would be interested to know how her skating looked otherwise. Like Hanna Harrell had a similar skate at the LA Open but I thought her skating skills, speed, and spins were on par with her prior outings (one of the issues for Gracie is that her skating in general isn’t anywhere close to her past level, never mind the jumps).

If Gracie can deliver one of these days with dramatically improved speed and skating skills she will have a chance at something (SA spot, Olympics, Worlds…..something). If her skating is still very slow and labored then I don’t think she will be competitive.
Gracie is never going to be the skater we all remembered back in 2012-16 sadly. That was her time to become the champion everyone thought she was but she never quite got there which had nothing to do with talent and more to do with nerves. Gracie's probably the most talented US ladies skater to come along in perhaps the last 15 years.

So Alysa has made improvements in speed?

Drastic improvements. She is so much faster than before. Her overall skating skills and performance quality here were so much better than they have been for the past few season.
It makes you thnink her previous coach really didn't work on Alysa's basic skating and was all about the jumps if she can improve this fast with the right coach.

Alysa Liu - Peggy Fleming
Thanks! Alysa looks great but I'm a little confused - is this like a variation of her planned SP or something she put together just for this competition?

For me, that was the right decision. She got to where she is at this point because of those jumps, and I don't think any amount of work on artistry would have gotten her the PCS scores necessary to win a National title at 13 if she wasn't out jumping the field.
