They did the same jumps but LT had higher scores (+GOE) and they were about even on the non-jumps elements. On the PCS side, AL was a little higher but again overall LT had a higher score. So the opinions some have that Lindsey could make the Olympic team seem valid. Of course we still have the LP....

If you're referring to Nebelhorn vs. JGP Ljubljana, that's not true? Alysa scored 70.86 (coincidentally, Adeliia Petrosian, who's in 1st at Ljubljana, scored exactly the same) and Lindsay scored 70.24. But you're right, comparing scores across competitions is kind of a fruitless exercise.

I definitely think Lindsay is very much in the mix for an Olympic spot though. She doesn't have to out-skate Alysa to make it, and I think she'd easily give Karen/Amber/Mariah and an injured Bradie a run for their money.

Lindsay is a lovely skater who really impressed me with her recent SP performance. I think she and Alysa are Locks for the Olympic Team and the rest of the ladies are fighting for the 3rd spot.

I think Alysa is a lock. Lindsay: She has the jumps. She has the spins. She has wonderful skating skills, posture and her step seq. is outstanding. But she skates so cautiously, and she needs to find a way to command the ice (As Alysa does) and skate with more confidence. I feel like she is overthinking every step, jump and move. I'm not sure she is quite ready to contend for an Olympic spot, but if not this year, then maybe next year-Karen, Bradie, Mariah and Amber will probably retire and the field will be wide open for Worlds, etc.. A triple axel and putting the lutz loop back in the second half of the program would probably give her a much better chance this year.

Lindsay is lovely. She has those soft knees that usually only Japanese skaters are blessed with. She is a steady skater. Her jump technique is solid. Her extension is beautiful and I personally love her calm presence on the ice. I find her shyness endearing. However, I don't think she is a lock for the team. She lacks command and power. She is a bit slow even compared to Alysa and it isn't because her SS aren't good, she can get power when she wants it... she is just so cautious because she wants to do everything perfectly. If the seniors don't improve, then I think she will be chosen.

Ava Marie Ziegler who is also at the competition is the complete opposite side of the coin. She has power and performance ability in spades. Her power is Amber Glenn, Kaori, or Wakaba like ....However, she makes a lot of small mistakes due to lack of attention to detail which makes it impossible for the judges to fully reward her( didn't get credit for one of her spins here .. had messy moments throughout) but the judges want to score her highly because that kind of explosive power on the ice is eye-catching and impressive

I think these two women train in the same rink? If so, they should study each other and learn from each other's strengths.

I think Ava has high potential to learn a triple axel, she has great explosiveness especially vertically and good rotation speed (unlike kaori which achieves her axel in a more horizontal distance, which would be ok if she wasn't a relatively slow rotator), and from seeing her you seem to think she has the grit to go for it mentally. I'm curious what the future will bring
 
I thought this was a good weekend for the US women! Axel mistake in the free aside, Alysa got the job done and added another reason she should be on the Olympic team. I liked Ava’s programs and if she cleans up the details, she could be another top US woman. Lindsay impressed me that the trip axel wasn’t great but she did everything else pretty well and I was happy to see her try the axel. At this point if she has a decent showing at nationals she stands a good chance at making the team too.

I was thinking, as she skated onto the ice this morning, that she's one of the few women who's already smiling at the audience, looks really happy to be there, grateful to be skating, happy to skate for the audience. And she means it. I'm not worried about the 3A. Seeing the hard work and stunning progress she's made in the last 8-9 months, I believe it will come along. As I said in post #1,842 of this thread ... Fans here and elsewhere have been very vocal about how Alysa's jump technique needed to change, so I think we should really celebrate that she did it! :points:

Alysa has become a dynamic skater. Honestly when she skates I cannot take my eyes off of her. If she can get at least one of her money jumps back she will be a contender internationally.
 
Crazy that just a year ago at this time people were writing Alysa off. She had just had a growth spurt and her big jumps disappeared and most people were saying she was done. Now she qualifies the 3rd Olympic spot for the US ladies and is the frontrunner to win Nationals again. Who knows where she will be in another year.

It just goes to show ... there's a lot of "writing off" of skaters that is very, very premature.
 
Is it at all concerning that Alysa UR'd her combos both in the SP and FS? But maybe it's just one competition? I'm just curious and not trying to rain on anyone's parade.

She got q's which i think are slightly better pointswise than an underrotations, but she also got calls on her flip edge for i think every flip she did.

I haven't looked at her other competitions, but the concern is going to be that if she gets the reputation of someone that under-rotates then judges tend to look quite closely at those skaters jumps
 
What an amazing week of figure skating. Not only did Alysa Liu nab a gold medal en route to securing a third Olympic spot, but Lindsay Thorngren proved to be formidably sturdy, taking home the bronze medal in her second event on the Junior Grand Prix circuit. Lindsay managed to improve on her previous season's best score by over 12 points. Furthermore, Lindsay posted the tenth highest overall score for junior women on the Junior Grand Prix; Lindsay and Isabeau are the only non-Russian women in the top ten. If Lindsay manages to rotate her triple-Axel, she will definitely be in the running for an Olympic berth. Currently, Lindsay has the third highest total score amongst US women, only behind Alysa and Isabeau. Also, props to Ava whose only major mistake was in the free skate in which the triple-Toe in her Lutz combo was deemed downgraded; however, Ava finally landed a clean 3Lz3T, doing so in her short program with positive grade-of-execution (+1.18). Our US junior women have been absolutely wonderful on the international stage, having brought home four medals.

Next week, Clare Seo and Mia Kalin will represent the US in the penultimate Junior Grand Prix event in Poland (Sept. 29-Oct. 2).

The underrotations are concerning if Alysa wants to challenge some of the other international women. However, among the US women, it's not a huge concern since the other US women have worse underrotation issues coupled with worse competition nerves. Furthermore, to play it safe, Alysa could move her 3Lz+3T to the beginning of her program. She was having some issues with the 3F+Eu+3S in the second half and they changed it to a 2A+Eu+3S in the first half, which she has been landing beautifully and has gotten no calls on. She gives up some BV, but it could easily be made up for with GOE and a clean 3T.

The 3F edge call is a concern, but it's relatively easily fixed/avoided if she replaces the 3F in her short program with a 3Lo, and the flip would be the jump to go if she were to put two 3As in her FP anyway, which I imagine is what she would want to do in time for the Grand Prix season.

LIndsay really has a lot of nice qualities but she doesn't have the experience of the other ladies. She may be in the mix for a spot for the olympics but other than Ms. Liu it is a fight for the other two spots.
