Bradie is on the cover of Skating Magazine. It’s about “Bradie 2.0” and how she’s still skating for the Olympics. No word on her injury status.

Here's what is apparently a reprint of the Skating Magazine cover story about Bradie in Fanzone, dated November 23. It ends with her saying she's still aiming for the Olympics.

kind of strange this article didn't talk about her injury at all.

i'm almost wondering if she withdrew from the events this fall not because of the injury but because she needed more time to get in competitive shape.

As Mary speculated this interview might have been done prior to the season, or yeah they are being so quiet about the injury and her status that it makes a person wonder why exactly they are being so secretive.

Well Nats begins in one month and two days so we will know soon enough. I must admit the whole thing is getting on my nerves (as though my nerves mean squat). And I like Bradie a lot so.... But.... Anyway...

I can’t imagine she is purposely going into nationals without any competition this year. It seems a very bad strategy. I’d love to be wrong and have her show up with a 3A and a quad she’s been secretly training and prove me wrong!!

The article reads to me like the interview occurred before the season started, even though it was just published. No mention of GP assignments or program specifics or anything - just a nice generic fan article.

The article was not really "just published" -- except in the sense that an online version was just added to Fan Zone.
More like: "just re-published."

The article was published originally as the cover story of the November issue of Skating magazine, which is a hard-copy publication.

Meaning that the interview would have been conducted well in advance of November (to allow for writing, editing, layout and production of the printed issue, etc. -- in time for the magazine to be mailed out for arrival at the beginning of November).

In all likelihood, the interview was conducted back when Bradie still was hoping to be able to compete at Skate America.
It surely was conducted well before her withdrawals from GP Italy and from Challenger events.

So who are the definite participants in nationals this year? Aren't they all listed already instead of having to calculate it again every time?

Following up on Laid-Back's query from last week:

As expected, this week USFS published its official lists of Nats entries (as of Nov 29):

Well there goes my whole reason for wanting to watch it! 🥺 I hope Isabeau is ok and gets plenty of rest. I wonder if she'll still do senior Nats or just go for Juniors?

AFAIK, the level chosen at the time of registration for the U.S. qualifying season is irrevocable.
IOW, I do not think USFS rules would have permitted anyone to switch later from Senior to Junior.

(Isabeau had registered for Senior at Leesburg, although she ended up withdrawing.)

I'm just having a hard time picturing a scenario in which it would make a difference. If Karen gets a medal (or comes in 4th with Isabeau ahead of her) she's in, and if she misses the top 5 she's out. If Karen is in 4th or 5th, I don't think they'd bump Mariah (who has a higher SB), Amber (who got passed over in favor of Karen once already and has now posted a 200+ score internationally), or Bradie if any of them medal.

I get what your opinion is, but you and I both are not on the USFS committee that will make the decisions. :)

Another opinion of mine is that Nats scores will matter in addition to Nats placements.
For example, I think the USFS committee making Olympic selections potentially would view a separation of only 0.35 ;) differently from a separation of 3.5 points, for example -- meaning a possible difference in the extent to which all facets of BOW (including Karen's fourth place and 208+ score at 2021 Worlds) would be taken into account.

Again, my heart is with Amber.
But I hope that the USFS will give fair consideration to all the women.
(I recognize that what I think is fair could be different from what someone else thinks is fair.)

Honestly, my bigger worry for Amber is that she gets the Courtney Hicks treatment, who got relatively better marks from international panels than the national ones. The USFSA has preferred more artistic women at least as far back as the Tonya vs Kristi/Nancy days.

I WILL be starting a new thread regarding my opinion on the Russian dominance in this sport, across all disciplines and how it is ruining the sport of figure skating.

Russian men dominate in figure skating? Russian dance teams dominate in figure skating? How many of Russian dance teams were in the final group in Sochi? 3? 2? Or may be just 1? When Russian men or dance teams won the last Olympics?

This is as grotesque as my entering a soccer board claiming that US is ruining soccer through its dominance. Wait a minute, not only women play soccer? Ooops.

I think people are looking at the JGP as an indicator of what's to come. Russia dominated in all disciples including men and dance this year.

Nationals definitely are going to be interesting for the Women this year as everyone has detailed.

I do think that Alysa is a lock for the Olympics. To me, her weaknesses are her skating skills (they've improved a bit) and jump method solely with the international judges. Lord knows the US judges love her and no one has mentioned any strategies USFS may have about the Olympic Team Event that might play in the decision-making.

If Bradie shows up and does well, I think she's a lock too. She does well under pressure. However, I don't think she's ok. She had back issues before she tried to train a 3A. I admire her Fortune Favors the Brave attitude, but I'm not sure about her showing up at Nationals not having competed AT ALL! I've learned never to count her out though. She's a fighter.

Mariah and Karen are even in my book. Karen should be ahead, but her dang under-rotations just do her in.

Some people say Mariah missed her 3-3 at both Grand Prix events. My impression is that she always planned on doing 3-2s. My question is, what kind of foot injury keeps you from doing a 3-3 instead of 3-2? A broken toe? Anyway, I think she has been injured also, and since Skate America last year. Hence, the late arrival to the season. Healing time. Anyway, I feel she has to do the 3-3, in both SP and FS at nationals, or it's Karen.

So many people like Amber. I think she had momentum and a chance, but it dissipated. She's now considered inconsistent, and doesn't have a competitive history that could challenge Mariah or Karen. The path for her is Bradie not showing up to Nationals, nailing her 3A in both programs, and Mariah tanking with no 3-3. Karen doesn't really ever tank. That's why she's always in the mix.

It is going to be exciting to watch! Funny how the Russian Women (had to use italics for that word as they are still girls -1 slimmer of hope) are the main story this Olympics but I see a lot of international figure skating fan interest in who the US is going to send!

I was looking at the possibilities objectively, but Mariah is my favorite. Karen is my second favorite. They both are always so well packaged together with programs, outfits, music, skating skills etc. The others....eh.

This is very OT, but I didn't realize what thread this was until I'd already typed most of it, so.

Well, 3 out of 6 JGPF dance spots went to Russia, 3 to North American teams. I don't really consider that dominating. Not more than usual, anyways. Russia almost always gets at least 3 dance JGPF spots, going back ten years. No reason why it happening this year means anything in particular about seniors.

Dance JGPF spots:
2019 - 3 Russians, 1 US, 1 Georgian, 1 French
2018 - 3 Russians, 1 US, 1 Georgian, 1 Canadian
2017 - 4 Russians, 1 US, 1 Canadian
2016 - 2 Russians, 3 US, 1 French
2015 - 3 Russians, 2 US, 1 French
2014 - 4 Russians, 2 Canadians
2013 - 2 Russians, 3 US, 1 Ukrainian
2012 - 4 Russians, 1 US, 1 French
2011 - 4 Russians, 1 US, 2 Ukrainians

I'm not going to go through all the men's placings, since this is the US women's thread, but Russia's had several JGPF spots for men before too. 3 in 2019, 4 in 2016, for example. They have lots of great men (many that I'm a big fan of), but those 4 JGPF spots in 2016-17 didn't lead to them dominating senior men. Don't think we need to panic about it now.

Mariah went for the 3F-3T in her SP in France. The 3T was downgraded and she fell. In Russia, I think she probably planned the 3F-2T.

For the record, Karen did only a 3Lz-2T combo in the SP of both her GP events (and neither 3-2 was clean). Actually, I checked, and she did 3Lz-2T at Finlandia too (with a q), and 3Lz-1T at Autumn Classic. So she's not ahead of Mariah in that respect - she hasn't got any 3-3 combo in the SP this season (not even with a <) so far.

Karen has tried the 3-3 in the FS, with a 3T<< at Autumn Classic, a 3T< at GP France and a 3Tq at Finlandia. Also she's done one clean eu-3S combo (the rest were all under). Her real advantage in the FS is that she's going for more BV than Mariah is right now. But she also gets more jumps called under than Mariah does, so it balances out somewhat.

It'll be exciting to see how they both skate at Nationals.

So if they move the JGP to the end of the season, Isabeau will still be out? (Even if she would be fit to compete at this time)

I thought Ilia dominated in men?
I think Dominated is too strong a word. Isabeau and Lindsay definitely weren't "Dominated" or they wouldn't have qualified for the JGPF. Plus who really cares who dominates as a Junior. How many Junior World Champions have we seen who fizzle out after they win their Championship.
