Alysa recently recovered from C****, better to have them healthy and ready for the individual event.

If Alysa has made the decision to forego the team event for the individual it seems like a bad idea, unless the US has some meltdowns its pretty much just a matter of what color medal they get, with the individual event without some unfortunate WDs for injuries or covid, its unlikely she (or Mariah/Karen) medals. If it was the Feds decision there's not much she could do, but if i were a US lady competing here I would be willing to cannibalize the individual event for the team event where I'm more likely to get a medal.

Eh, I don't think she would be robbed if she had been left out of the team event (which would surprise me), while she has had some higher segment scores than the other 2 ladies she hasn't been that consistent, she had the last minute coaching change and did miss Nationals due to covid - it would seem odd for them to not use their National champ in the Team event and the substitutions available are limited. The US Fed has been pushing her for 3 years, if they aren't putting her in the team event its likely for good reason or with her teams blessing.
Team event medals should not be handed out like participation trophies, when we all know Alysa likely would have won nationals with or without COVID. Not to mention her SP performance was likely impacted by COVID. Is Mariah being selected as a farewell gift? Or because USFS actually believe she has a chance of beating Japan?

Or maybe Mariah would be selected because of the 3, she has the least problems with URs and also gets dependable GOE & second marks?

Except that the Team Event members are not chosen based on their URs/GOE or second marks. Their international scores are what matter most along with Nationals placements (or petitioning on). I think Mariah would be ranked second based on her international scores during the season and and her top three finish at Nationals. If Alysa cannot or does not want to do the Team Event, Mariah would be next in line.

Is there a published criteria that the Fed uses? I think of the 3 ladies, Mariah is the more solid choice, no UR habit like Karen and is a solid PCS scorer; Alysa's go-to is the triple axel that she hasn’t landed all season and backloaded triple-triples that she's been under-rotating this season and that was before the coaching change and covid - Alysa likely had to miss training and/or modify training. Any of the US ladies are unlikely to beat the Russians or Japanese, the Fed just needs them to not bomb it

The criteria you mention is for selection to the Olympic team. The fed can do anything it wants as far as choosing skaters for the team event.

Mariah doesn't get URs----as long as she doesn't attempt 3/3s. In past years, she was getting < on her 3/3s. Maybe that's why she's sticking with 3/2s.

Alysa skating the team event seemed like a lock on paper, but COVID certainly threw a wrench in it. Her performance in the short program at Nats didn’t help - and by all accounts she was asymptomatic.

She didn’t have the strongest GP season and looked to be in decline at Nats, so I would imagine if they passed her up it would be because of that or her diminished fitness after time off the ice. I can’t see her father and coaches passing on a essentially guaranteed medal when based on the GP and Euros she would likely be fighting for top 7 in the individual. And she seems to want to go to college and take a break after the Olympics, so this could be her only shot at a medal.

This also would be the only shot at a medal for both Mariah & Karen. The skater should be chosen only on current competitive readiness.

I agree but it's so hard to decide who is the most competitive right now.

Alysa has good base value but if the judges are like GP judges she's going to get hammered on GOE. Mariah on the other hand seems to get decent GOE.

Do they call under rotations etc at the Olympics??? Do they call edges etc ???
I didn't pay attention to the technical side of things last time.

Well....I hope if Alysa isn't doing the team event, it's because she herself didn't want or she's not back in form due to lost training time...really no other good reason for USFS not to use her.
Toyota might have something to say about it, too. Unless Alysa is screaming I DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS, then she will be the Team member.

According to a news article, Alysa (and her coach Viktor Pfifer) are supposed to leave Feb. 4th and it was reported by Match.TV that Mariah isn't doing the TE.

The most likely placement for any of the three American ladies in the Team Event is 3rd, provided all participants skate reasonably well. Maybe 2nd if everything works out.

In terms of which one will help the team the most, I don't really think it matters.

So I’m guessing we’ll get confirmation tomorrow that Alysa won’t be doing the team event, as they have to submit a list of all available competitors for the event and she and Victor aren’t expected in Beijing until the end of the week.

I hope that if it wasn’t her decision that there aren’t any hard feelings. I completely understand wanting to dig deep and fight against a perceived injustice, but it never feels good to feel left out.
