2021 Worlds: Pairs' FS "Thoughts and Observations"

Moskvina is used to questionable behavior in the K&C. Remember 1997 worlds when Anton Sikharulidze didn't even bothering waiting for the marks? They were so bad in the free they went from 3rd in the SP, and almost medaling, to 9th overall! He went straight from the ice to backstage and left Elena alone in the K&C with Tamara.

ABC didn't show him storm off though. They went to commercial right after the performance and then came back to show only Elena and Tamara in the K&C. I don't think they even acknowledged his absence. Did they show it elsewhere?

M/G gave everything they had and won. And they had the program with the most difficult elements like a 3S-eu-3S and 3Lz throw. A well deserved win!

S/H have their strengths - yes, they are better artists and their feel of each other is superb. But with the watered down tech content vs. M/G and serious mistakes they just could not win. And this is clear to everyone but the people on the mission who would give 6s to a "Russian junior pair" and 10s to S/H. Whatever they say, whatever "proofs" they bring it's all just sour grapes of fans whose favorites lost fair and square. There is one thing that is impossible to neglect: M/G won 1.88 points over S/H. They lost 1.15 pcs in the FP. In order to win S/H had to have 1.15+1.88=3.03 pcs advantage. The Chinese judge gave S/H 2.8 pcs advantage. If every judge scored pcs same as "the least biased" Chinese judge, M/G would still win.

Winning your first senior worlds to We Are The Champions, is like poetry! Nastia spoke truthfully, they were shocked to win the gold. I really hope that they can stay grounded and continue to improve their skating like we have seen during this season. I would like to see them skate with more speed and improve ice coverage throughout their lifts.

I don’t really know what else went wrong for S/H in the free program, other than the 3S rotation. I thought they deserved about 150 points, which would have given them a narrow win. Their PCS gap appears to have diminished but they are still leading the other teams. People say there is no other feeling like skating at a home Olympics and I have every faith in them for Beijing.

Stockholm was ready to hand B/K the title, but I guess they must have felt the pressure of being in the lead. In my opinion winning the SP outright could have made them overthink matters – being last to skate, they must have known that M/G had beaten S/H and I wonder if this had played on their minds at all? I’ve also heard about the comment to Moskvina – if it is true then I hope it doesn't stir up too much. They do have to train together day in, day out! Emotions run high after a competition like this and all the pairs must be tired skating their absolute all for two days in a row.

I am glad T/M won a small medal for the free. After the SP, I was worried but now I am kind of hopeful for their future. For me, they still have the best skating qualities (and the commentators agree on this). With B/K’s problematic FS, there was only about 5 points between them by the end (if only there was a combo!). I am wishing for this result to spur them on for next season – maybe 2022 is their year.

Their combo was also underrotated and she two-footed the landing on 3S.

Agree. Everyone has things to work on when they get home - skating skills for M/G and B/K, jump consistency for S/H and T/M, and perhaps sports psychology for T/M and B/K. But overall it was a very good event considering the circumstances

So I just specifically watched the pairs being debated, and I'll just say it's unbelievable to me that both Blues for Klook and Rain, In Your Black Eyes gave Sui/Han such a negligible advantage in PCS over their competitors... Maybe they didn't deserve to win, but the PCS is messed up.

I really hope S/H don't rest on their laurels and prepare well for the Olympics - they need to up their BV and be more consistent on their jumps. If you want to win the OG, then you need to be the best not only in PCS but TES as well.

The difference between the top teams is very small and the ice is slippery.

But they've been skating this same programs for ages? Like I get that they've been injured and they're good programs, but I can't imagine any other pair not getting BS for reusing programs again and again.

I'd love T/M to skate to Rach #2 for the rest of their careers but I'm not silly enough to think the judges wouldn't appreciate a third season of it.

Bolero will definitely have to go even though it's stunning for them.

And if the judges didn't get bored the fans sure would and then there'd be the predictable "Ooo they're using the same music again, boo hiss! They can't even do something NEW." So even if they did magically win the 2022 Worlds or Olympics the whole thing would be ruined anyway by the endless griping.

I think they need to stabilize the SBS jumps and perhaps the can train a quad twist? That would provide an advantage. The will also have the advantage of skating at home.

This is really not kind. I don't think you would happy if someone replied to you in this way when one of your favorites was, in your opinion, not scored appropriately.

Honestly, it could have gone either way and I see arguments for both winning but some people won't agree and that's ok!

My prediction for the top 4 of the pairs was almost correct, except that the winner was M/G, not B/K! I know they will be a dark horse in this competition because of their technical advantages, and moreover, the starting order of the FS really helped them, compared to B/K.

Honestly I love B/K more than any other pairs, but Boikova's sharp words for a coaching legend in the K & C after the skate were really shocking and unacceptable to me! When asked why she would accept M/G as B/K's competitors, Moskvina responded that she was the boss of this school... Such a fragile and small old lady with such strong will and principles, you have to respect her!

Anonymoose, you really need to realize that public opinion exists. What can I do if *you* think it matters that Sui and Han wouldn't be getting the same bs "somebody else" would? It doesn't even relate to skating. The judges better judge what is put in front of them, I don't care how "bored" they are. If they're that bored, they can quit. Goodness knows how they can slog through most of Ice Dance and Pairs if "boredom" is a legitimate reason.

Lori Nichol lives in Vancouver - I don't think S/H could have gotten new programs even if they tried due to the Coronavirus and lack of international travel. Plus, it's better to save the best ideas for the OG.
