Challenge for seniors stars in about 25 minutes... Threads were made in the competition section of the forum... I will not be able to watch much because of work but I want to see Toman.

They are good but they will need to do triple throws and get smoother in the lifts. That last lift gave me the heebie jeebies

However, they make points up on their great jumps.... and right now, few teams are exploiting the +2a combo.... good for them.

I have been thinking a lot about our pairs...
1) because I am excited... we thought this would be tough with the retirements of our top three pairs... but Deanna and Maxime have stepped it up... and new pairs are emerging
2) Nic and Emma : so fresh.. but already promising. We will have to see how they develop but i have a lot of enthusiasm for them.. Challenges : remain injury free... open up... secure the big tricks.
3) Lia and Trennt... I am not worried about the throws.. a bit about the lift... but here is what I just thought about... In some ways, I am almost hoping they took longer to make a team... It sort of looks like Trennt is repeating the style they had with Evelyn. Deanna and Maxime look nothing like what they were in their previous partnerships... we could say the same watching Lubov, reinventing herself depending on partners... same with James and Radford... I simply wish that Lia and Trennt will take the time to figure out what they could do as a new team... instead of following in the previous partnership of Trennt's footsteps... That's just my perception.. Curious to see if I am the only one thinking that...
4) I am looking forward to both young teams of BMsquare and Laurin Ethier... both boys are tall and slender but lift very well...so it's like getting the best of both worlds... strong lifter with nice lines. Also, it's fun that they are both pushing themselves to get the hardest elements.
5) When Wolfe and Ruest teamed up, of course, none of them had done pairs before, (same with nic and emma though).. but it took them a super long time to even try the triple twist... all teams have that element now... and it's solid ! Bravo !...
6) Sorry to say but I thought I would miss MTM 2.0 this year...but exactly because we get good twists and exciting lifts, I don't miss them as much as expected... I do miss their refinement though.. I hope all our teams will get there soon.
7) anyone know about Matte and Ferland? How badly is Lori Ann injured???

ETA : on Thierry's instagram.. he is still training alone... On their facebook page, dated november 13, they say Lori Ann injured her foot/ankle... and that she cannot train for many weeks... which resulted in pulling out from both GPs... doesn't look good :(

another thought I have lately..

@RatedPG was sharing the "scoring" threshold needed for our athletes to get international assignments.

I think it's fair and fine to have these rules... HOWEVER, they work in ideal circumstances... When there are many athletes in a discipline, let's say ice dance and women (though not enough women were sent either this year), fine... establish a minimum score to reach before getting assignments... But with pairs and men... we cannot afford to be picky and wait for a team to score 160 in Canada before they can get out... especially in a year when there is not Autumn Classic and besides limited summer events when athletes are often not ready ... there is pretty much 0 opportunity to skate aside from qualifying competition...and these events happen later in the fall... So it's already too late for many to get out before Nationals... so there is no tech minimums earned etc etc...

The Skate Canada rules are supposed to HELP the athletes... not to create additional obstacles.

Skate Canada should either lower their minimum score OR be a bit more lenient in the application of the rules... or make it a TES minimum score... as total scores imply PCS.. and it's not a secret anymore... judging is harsh in Canada.

I promise I am done for tonight ;)

I agree with 4everchan on the need to get our senior (and junior) skaters out to more senior B’s. I know it’s expensive for a less wealthy country to send skaters to Europe multiple times in a season (sorry the ISU is over-the-top Eurocentric in this regard, there needs to be a way to get more mid- to late-autumn B’s in North America), but I think I heard Shae Zukiwsky, SC Senior Director Performance Excellence, in an interview with Ted, say we have the talent, but the skaters often don’t deliver when competing. I think it is pretty clear these issues are closely related.

yes.. and i just finished watching the senior SP for women... guess what... the top 3 are skaters who did get out... and actually are building confidence from competing more regularly.

As far as competition nerves, that's certainly important, but I would say that if you're not delivering consistently at domestic competitions you're not suddenly going to improve by being sent to international ones. Skaters should be using domestic competitions to scale up to international assignments.

Nice free skate by Fiona, other than the opening 2Lz-1T.

Not necessarily true at all.

There is no rule for when a skater will get consistent other than keep competing... Some will indeed, as you say, get better and better with smaller events, in safe places like home...but for others, there is nothing more difficult than competing in front of friends and family : the dreaded added pressure of wanting to do well in front of the support group... Also, the small events at home are often associated with getting results : whether it is benchmark scores to get assignments or qualifying events like sectionals and challenge... and then, in the case that a skater finally feels comfortable at home, then it doesn't mean that when they finally get out to an international event, they will not crumble with the new experience which includes traveling, jet lag, fatigue, being away from home etc... For instance, Roman seems to skate relatively well at home.. but not internationally...

So I am sorry but I disagree with what you are saying. It is necessary to send skaters to a bunch of different events, from small summer series events to Senior Bs and challengers...

In my field, there is a popular saying : you will not get rid of stage anxiety until you have performed 100 times... I don't think skaters will get to 100 times not even 30 times if every year they just skate at home... Our skaters need to be sent more... End of story.. And as a matter of fact, since you mentioned Fiona, that was her best event in a long time... isn't it strange that it happened just after she has finally been sent to an international event?

Today was pairs day... I still haven't seen the whole performances due to sleep/work or no stream but the scores being out.. and FWIW

JGPF... ... Panetta and Trasher were not favourites. I hope they cherish the experience and learn from it

GPF Deanna and Maxime : they seem to have skated well... I notice the levels of some of their elements being higher.. lesser GOE than they can get... but good skate... in 3rd place.

Golden Spin :Lia and Trennt seem to have done quite well... that double throw wasn't as costly in a field where many teams do not have the hardest content.... Where they didn't convince the judges compared to their rivals " PCS" wise... expected considering it's their first event internationally... They are still fighting for the podium... go go go (in 4th)

Sad for Deanna & Maxime, though it sounds like they've had health issues in the leadup. A good day for Piper & Paul and Nadiia & Peter, though.

Over in Zagreb, both Madeline and Lia & Trennt won bronze medals. Really promising international debut for the latter.
Definitely sad for Deanna and Max, but I have no doubt they'll come back swinging. I think we all have to remember that this is really their first season competing together internationally and they've done phenomenally well to rise like they have. It's also been a really long season for them so far, with little down time. I expect they'll be ready to fight by nationals. I think they're definitely still in the hunt for that world bronze medal in the eyes of the judges, though may have lost the edge they had over other teams.

Scores were a bit disappointing for Piper and Paul, who I thought skated really well, with a lot of confidence. Suddenly getting level two on their step sequence and pattern? I'm smelling some politics pushing Chock and Bates, and I don't like it. Or maybe just a one-off. Go Evita!

Great debut for Pereira/Michaud. Wish there was video. I think they are favourites for the Canada No. 2 spot. And glad to know Maddie fought for it.

Just looked at the protocols from Golden Spin and noticed that Pereira/Michaud had the highest tech score in the competition by quite a bit. That bodes really well for them, as I would expect their components to rise as they get more experience as a team. And they've by no means maxed out their tech elements either (they really do need some throw triples).
