he had a different on in practice... if I had to guess he didn't like the feel of the new one and switched it out for the Padam Padam which he had on hand for the gala

Yeah...Mitsuki has been struggling with a chronic, undiagnosed illness for a couple of years now
He was actually going to retire last season but decided to stick it out for one more

I also did not know. So it is brave effort from him.
Great he saved his final free skate by doing 3T+3T in the second half after missing planned Lutz combo.
