2022-23 Russian Women's Figure Skating

I said for months that things will get worse for the Russian skaters before they get better and this is holding true. Now this tweet is not that big a thing in the scheme of things but it's twisting the knife in the back of the great Russian figure skaters who won twice as many figure skating medals as the second-best country at the recent Olympics.

It's sad to see the leaders of a sport that they say unifies the world is sacrificing Russian figure skaters careers for their hatred of Russia and their leaders and their culture and their history and that's what this is really about.

Meanwhile Russian figure skaters on Instagram and telegram act like everything is fine they are smiling and having fun just wait till next season as they won't be smiling because there won't be a next season for them with the ISU.

But I am sad that the great Russian figure skaters who was Stellar at the Olympics are not being recognized by their organization the international skating Union. And this all I bet comes from the ioc.

It's also disappointing that no one in figure skating has spoken up for the Russians the way the tennis players have taken control with tennis to have the back of Russia and Belarus tennis players because everyone knows Sports and politics should not mix but they do in figure skating.
Well if FFKR did not fight back yet then they should now. I don't want cancel culture in skating.

I agree with you but cancel culture is everywhere that Russians are.

The problem now is those running the Russian figure skating Federation will not be able to lead their skaters out of the Wilderness and into a great season next season they have so much talent so much potential even to just do their own Grand Prix season and final and their own European championships and their own world championships with just Russia and Belarus. I doubt they will have the cognitive ability to come up with something like that. I would certainly do that and state publicly that all of these competitions are open to figure skaters of the world to attend. It would send shock waves through the figure skating world and sports world but that's what needs to happen not going and running and hiding in the corner like they do.

We are worried about akatieva being Junior eligible for 5 years and not skating seniors for more than three more years but who knows if Russia will even be active in the ISU then.

No matter what happens the Russian figure skaters need to start speaking up publicly and privately that all of the people heading the Russian figure skating Federation need to be removed retired or forced to quit or fired.

And what does Lakernick do? He seems useless to me and if he's still a part of the Russian figure skating Federation he needs to be fired. I have no doubt that those leading Russian figure skating Into the Wilderness into Siberia are like politicians and care only about their positions and everyone else including the skaters are replaceable. It's time for Anna and Sasha and those Russian skaters in their 20s to demand action that changes need to be made that younger people need to lead Russian figure skating in the future. All these leaders have ever done is watch their own backs they do not have the backs of their skaters and when reality sets in that Russia's greatest athletes are banned from next season the skaters will be angry.

Oh and great job by kogan and rusada and everybody at the top of Russian figure skating for allowing kamilas urine sample to float out there seemingly in space for nearly six weeks before it was examined at the end of the Olympic team event. Gee what could go wrong with not following up on Valievas urine sample from December 2021? ;) like I said the leadership the Russian skaters have is a joke the athletes themselves are fantastic! those at the Russian Federation are not.

what are they doing in training camp?
nothing special, just some extreme yoga - trying standing on an acupressure mat (with nails) :ROFLMAO:

I prefer the Russian GP series as well. But I want skaters who are the complete package. Not only jumps.

"Artisty" is so subjective though.

With jumps it is easy to tell who is a weak or strong jumper. Which landings are off and which hit the spot...but "artistry" and "skating skills" in the PCS portion is so subjective even with the guidelines.

I thought Aliona was pretty much gold standard (her older performances before the jump focus this season and before meltdown covid season. So her junior seasons and senior debut is what I am referring to), but I realized that some people don't think/agree that she's special like I do. Which is fine :)

Do you guys have a personal set of ratings for skaters you consider "artistic"?

I have 4 main checkboxes on my list for what I like in skaters I believe are artistic in my opinion:
  1. Musicality (if they chase the music and are constantly behind the music on most programs it is a no for me. It's okay if it's slightly behind towards the end during a spin (because it happens), but during most of the program? No. It's one of the things that annoys me the most when the skater chases the music and the accents do not match. No rhythm in sight. Very big turn off and kills the program for me personally). My personal top choice this season for musicality is Anna S. She does very well with accents in fast paced music even if new (like this season with the surprise new short program in the middle of GP competition).
  2. The arm movements!!! (I love flow-y fluid arm movements like Sofia M, Maiia K, or dramatic slow to the finger tip arm + hand movements like Adeliia P in "no time to die/paint it black". I just love it. Extra bonus points for non-stiff arms for me. Stiff arms are not a deal breaker but constantly moving fluid soft lingering arm movements definitely adds to the program in my opinion and I especially notice)
  3. The glide: buttery smooth almost effortless floating on ice type of skating. Most skaters I like don't have "the glide" I am referring to but the ones who do make it look so magical. So I don't count this against some of my faves who I consider artistic but it's a bonus for me and I rank them higher on my personal list of artistic skaters
  4. Emotion: It doesn't have to be much, but a blank face the entire program is a major turn off. I appreciate when skaters give a little something here and there. It kind of removes the connection of their performance to the music when the whole program is a serious blank face. I do not count this against Juniors at all but I definitely count it against seniors. Some might disagree but Evgenia Medvedeva ate this up. I loved watching her performances and facial expressions. I know some people say she "did too much" but for me it was perfect. She was very "in character" and gave it her all. I'd like to see more of that, but I know that not everyone can stay in character while trying not to mess up or trying not to cry while messing up (example is Sofia M...she almost had it, but melted when she fell in the Russian cup stage 5 was it? Made me realize how difficult it is to keep composure under such pressure. She has recovered since and does not let the disappointment show as much as then).
That's my basic top four that I really look for/consider when I rate skaters for the "artistic" portion. After these I start considering things like transitions/presentation.
Do you guys have any preferences when it comes this? Like stiffer arms? (I know some people don't like the arm strokes I do).

Also, this might be too early but did any new program music leak for any of the Russian ladies for the 2022-2023 season?

Totally agree with this post, Especially the comments about Evgenia. For arm movement, I would add Liza N and Gubanova , who now skates for Georgia.
For musicality I would add Daria to the list of skaters with good musicality.

I just watched it in full. This video is for entertainment value, is drama bait, and not accurate. Here are some of my reasons (many can't be added because the investigation is not over):

1st isn't this the same girl who in a past video wished for Anna to break her legs so the empress Elizaveta could compete instead?

2nd I tried to watch but quickly realized the person does not know much about figure skating elements besides the word "ultra-c" (triple axel and quads). What about the types of combos performed resulting in more points? 3-3 Combos vs axel sequence combos? More points for certain spin types? All level 4 elements vs level 3? Having a lead in the short?
The Elizaveta vs Anna thing was not only biased in this video but is inaccurate in terms of jumps and spin levels performed by both women at RUS Nats. Ultra-c isn't a guarantee if the other elements do not match the highest level (for example two quads but all double jumps and double combos + level 3 spins will not get you the podium against top Russian seniors or even juniors performing all Level 4s and 3-3s).

Anna vs Elizaveta for the third Olympic spot was a non-argument if you analyze the content performed by the women and their history. It was used by the press, some Liza fans, and even Plushenko to stir and fuel drama (side note: Plush though soon ate his own words at Junior RusNats).

If you'd like me to fully break down Anna vs Liza's RUS NATS elements side by side in both the short/free and how Liza secured her loss by herself at RUS Nats with no help let me know. The GOE favored Liza over Anna, but she let it go 100% in the short to the point that the slight comeback 14 pt GOE bonus in the free could not save her. If you stripped Anna's 5 points for the 4F her elements are 77 points without ultra-c and would be 0.48 pts ahead of Liza in the Fs not counting the 10 point Gap in the short giving an automatic win over Liza who bombed the short. The short sealed the deal. Even with Maiia's disaster skate PCS (68) Anna would still have won over Liza with the short lead. Same thing would be true for Kami vs a clean Sasha due to the Short program lead she always has.
The argument about the juniors vs Anna's placement though would be accurate if they were at senior level in this event and qualified for Olys (side note: before this nationals competition those very same Juniors never got PCS that high before in that season).

Considering point #1 where she wished Anna ill will for Liza's success I am not shocked at all by her biased analysis there at that portion where she's basically praising Liza's programs (who did make mistakes in the free as well as the short) and downplaying Anna's performances by calling them "lackluster" even when clean.

3rd Kami and ALLLL of the Russian skaters (pairs, ice dance, and mens) chosen for the olympic team event had to perform both the short and the free. THE WHOLE TEAM. Not just Kami. She didn't get the special treatment of just her performing both. THEY ALL HAD TO. This video made it seem like it was only Kami who was chosen to perform both which is manipulative and drama bait. Yes, Anna and Trusova were not happy but that is what RUSFED decided for THE WHOLE TEAM chosen to perform in the team event both times.

4rth Team tut did not send the urine samples like stated in the video. What is this lie? This is ridiculous and dangerous. New people who don't do research will watch this and think Team tut has the power to send out urine samples for tests themselves now which is not true.

5th at 39:16 She "perseveres" and beats Kaori due to the "record breaking quad content"? Hold on...
Sasha doesn't need 5 quads or "record breaking quad content" to beat Kaori. That part was exaggerated and giving Kaori more credit than she is due. She was never a tough competitor for the Russians which was insinuated by the video. She is however forever the default* gold champion of worlds 2022 since the best can't be there until further notice.

6th 53:05 onwards about Anna being forgotten and "feels like no one cares about her" is ridiculous. The reason behind the refusal of the Kremlin meeting is a lie and a dangerous statement to throw around but no politics in this forum so I'll drop it and won't get into it.

7th Mark did not sign up for military training (it is law in Russia for men. Many countries by law draft men who are of age to serve in the military such as South Korea for example). What lie and trickery is she spinning here about Mark? She's speaking as if he joined the army to be in the war and fight? Why lie spreading false rumors about innocent skaters?

I wish she did a bit more research as she is misinforming anyone stumbling upon this video. Maybe she did this on purpose for more juicy gossip or honestly doesn't know and spreads rumors she reads on socials. I am not sure, but this is not an educational figure skating kind of channel---it is a DRAMA channel focussing on figure skaters. Let's make this clear.

Is it entertaining drama bait? Yes. Is it factually accurate? No. If I did not genuinely care about figure skating, and wanted the "tea" or "dirt" on Russian skaters in order to be entertained I would subscribe and eat up all the misinformation but I'm not the target audience for this. A lot of people into drama would love this video though.

This isn't a rant at you, but the video/youtube creator herself.

Edit: Several Typos had to be fixed :)

I saw some of vids from that channel before and I guarantee the creator lies totally on purpose.

The video consists of the ramblings of a deranged person with deep seated Russophobia.

Goodness.

I looked at the replies and they are getting roasted rightfully so... let's be clear its international Olympic day, they didn't have to use 2022 Olympians and if they didn't want to use 1 Olympian because of her nationality they should have picked 1 2022 Olympian, a historical Olympic champ or no picture at all but to use 3 olympic champions and then use the bronze place finisher to avoid using a Russian is disgusting especially when Shcherbakova avoided the Kremlin meeting (possibly deliberate).
Given the issues at play, they should have just NOT made this post at all. It should have occurred to someone that they were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. Just No. Don't go there.

Just wanted to post it. So quick? I wonder what could have happened so serious.
