2022 NRW Trophy

The 2022 NRW Trophy will take place Nov 24-27, 2022, in Dortmund, Germany, at the Eissportzentrum Westfalen. This international event will feature the singles discipline (Women and Men) and Ice Dance in the Novice, Junior and Senior categories.

The competition will be conducted in accordance with the 2022 ISU Constitution and General Regulations, the 2022 Special Regulations and Technical Rules for Single Skating, as well as all relevant ISU Communications.

Day 1 of the NRW Trophy is completely about the Novice skaters. This afternoon has the Pattern Dances for all three levels, and then this evening we have the Advanced Novice Singles skaters doing their Short Programmes.

The rinkside announcer is very clear. And so are the pictures. It is almost like being there!

I had to laugh, though. He announced that the Warm-Up would be 3 minutes long, and that the music would start 30 seconds into the Warm-Up. Talk about German efficiency!

However, the music didn't start until much later, and had only been going for about 30 seconds before he announced that the Warm-Up was over.

Unfortunately, the stream started misbehaving during the first partnership, so didn't see all of the programme.

Music problems for the fourth partnership. Well, there are no problems with their music. It is playing alright. The problem is that the music that was being played in between the partnerships wouldn't stop!

I love Camila Cabello a much as the next person, but I want to see skating!

After the announcer told them to wait, the stream froze. And they were under way by the time it came back. So, they weren't waiting long.

It was funny in between the two Pattern Dance segments.

As soon as the scores for the last partnership were announced, the Czech girl at the front of the queue at the gate stepped out onto the ice. But the announcer then told them that there would be a break for a few minutes, and the girl stepped back off the ice. But you could see that she was really itching to get out there, because she had one foot hanging over the ice the whole time until they were told the Warm-Up was starting!

Awww. The Polish girl fell early on their second Pattern Dance, and she was crying afterwards when they came off the ice.

Mmmm. This isn't a good idea. Introducing the judges during the Warm-Up. Because it means that the music is cutting out every time the announcer speaks.

This should have been done during the break in between segments. And my guess is that that was the plan, but somebody wasn't in their seat.

Now the Warm-Up is over, and they've realised that they don't have the music for the first of the 2 Polish partnerships taht open this segment. But, never fear, somebody is coming to the rescue with it.

I think the announcer is doubling up as the music master. Beacuse, although it was off mic, you could hear him telling off the person who delivered the music!

I am intrigued by the girl in the German partnership that opened up Group 2 in PD1 and Group 1 in PD2.

Suffice to say, she has a surname that is VERY common over here in Ireland.

The most fascinating thing, though, is that she has the EXACT same name as an Ice Dancer from Ohio, who we last saw in Juniors in the 2014-15 season. And this older skater had a partner who, although also from Ohio, had a very German name.

I wonder if there is a connection.

Anyway, there was a very funny moment involving her. After doing their first pattern dance, she and her partner were walking along putting their NRW Team jackets on. Except, she had accidentally put her right arm into the left sleeve. And as a result, she was having bother finding a sleeve to put her left arm into. And when she realised what had happened, she just took the coat off and carried it.
