2022 Worlds: Men's FS - Thoughts?

I just saw the NBC coverage of the event on U.S. prime-time television.

I have to say that overall I was not so much interested in the men this time. Shoma Uno won because in seven jumping passes he did 5 quads and 2 triple Axels. Good for him. Is this men's figure skating from now on? 5 quads and 2 triple Axels? Not that Shoma lacked artistry, but artistic considerations were not why he won.

There were some nice programs, but those skaters ;lost -- they didn't do 5 quads and 2 triple Axels.

I missed Jason Brown. I miss Daisuke Takahashi. I missed "the full vocabulary of skating" -- my favorite phrase from the ISU& rule book.

Sorry, guys. You were athletic but the ladies were lovelier this time around.

I am a bit sad Camden didn't have enough in the SP to hold on to the bronze. He did have the performance of the night and he has been a fave of mine since juniors. However, Yuma will remain hard to beat. His jumps are so great ! His skating skills too! Uno was just too good over both programs ! As a long time Uno fan (since even before Loco!!!) I am super excited he is now a world champion! He deserves it so much. I loved Adam's performance too. Too bad he sort of lost his focus after landing the big stuff. He seemed a bit too joyous right before he stumbled. Roman did well. I am proud of him for redeeming himself and confirming the 2 spots for Canada, while Keegan just didn't have his magical quad landings. Kudos to Keegan though for adding the quad lutz. He can land this jump and it is by trying it he will get better and better with it.
Disliked seeing Morisi so high : he just doesn't do it for me at all.
Malinin :a few impressive jumps. I don't think he deserves so much hype yet. His program felt quite empty to me. However, he is a super talent and very young and I believe he has it in him to be world champion one day.
Cha : not sure why he w/d but I was sad. I hope he is alright. He has grown a lot skating wise and on me in the last couple years.

So Camden as star of the day with Shoma as star over all :)

Shoma did 5 quads but his program was well skated and well built. Just the same way Nathan Chen does it. I don't see problems there. Did I prefer programs with 2-3 quads that had better choreo (for instance Adam's) yes...but even with 2 or 3 quads, most were not as good as Shoma's 5 quads in terms of substance.

If the ISU wants to reduce the number of quads, it's simple : add back the 2nd step sequence... these are demanding : lactic acid and cardio intensive.... and they take a lot of time... Add a point to the base level of the steps sequence too so they are worth about the same as a triple jump... Two of those, and we have it... Skaters will not have time to do 5 quads, and if they do, their program will have to be interesting. It is really the choreography that makes the programs... The real example of a program that focused solely on jumping was Malinin's

I'm delighted for Shoma :cheer::party2:-- the only thing that could have pleased me more is Emma-chan on the podium with him! ;)

And Vincent's 1st quad gave me chills. After such a disappointing Olympics, it was wonderful to see him get his chance to shine. As for Ilia, this is only the beginning. Golly, he started out like an OGM winner! Can't wait to see him grow and mature.

The pups did watch on TV in Japan so almost on the podium.

I basically can’t wait to see the very end of the gala when they would say ‘Shoma Uno, Winners Men’ 👏

Other than that, Shmuratko’s performance was phenomenal, and I am hoping that one of the great figure skating schools of the world will offer him tutelage.

Here's a little video with pups watching Shoma and sweet bit of what looks like mama Uno with the pups in Japan I'm guessing after Shoma's win.

I'm so happy for Shoma and Vincent!!!

Shoma has come so far and I just love him, his programs were brilliant this year!

And Vincent! It's been a rough quad for him, from not making the free in 2019 to bronze here! Especially after the heartbreak of the individual event at Beijing. I'm proud and happy for him! He's worked hard on his artistry too.

I'm looking forward to Yuma and Ilia's future in the sport. :) And I hope Ilia is OK for Junior Worlds.

Shout out to Kazuki for being cute as a button, Adam for having a 🔥 step sequence, Roman and Camden for going clean, Kevin for being Kevin and all of the lads really for sharing their talent with us 🥰

All the good thoughts and hopes for peace to Ivan S. He has a special talent performance-wise and I hope he gets to develop it.

Congratulations to Shoma! I had Yuma picked, but Shoma definitely brought it.

Big congratulations also to Vincent on his bronze! I'm so glad he was able to have such a great Worlds experience after the screwery he suffered at the Olympics.

Special note also to Camden, I was surprised enough when the short was clean, but then that free! I hope he can keep it up!

I think Ilia did satisfactorily for his first top-line Senior event, in line with my expectations. I had him anywhere from 8-12, so top 10 is a good result. I hope it calibrates others' expectations appropriately. I can't wait to see how he develops.

Like/agree with your whole post, but especially got a kick out of “screwery.” :laugh2: I may need to borrow that — should I talk to your lawyer about IP rights?

I wasn't a fan of Shoma's Bolero before, but with the audience behind him, it was spectacular. Had it been totally clean, it would have been epic. 😄 Loved the costume as well. He really deserved this gold medal.

Adam Siao Him Fa is a new favorite of mine, I really really hope he can have a career like Javier Fernandez and have a break through season next year. He had the most fun programs for me.

At one point I wanted to start a tread named The Current State of Step Sequences but then I realized there was little to discuss. It's simple: the second step sequence has been kicked out and it sucks.

I have a slightly different thread idea though...

I would prefer somebody to offer ice to what's left of great figure skating schools of Ukraine. I can but agree though that Shmuratko's moment was certainly an emotional highlight.

My feeling was from watching JGP that Ukraine didn’t really have much. They had Kokura who didn’t move into seniors. I thought he would be interesting to watch but he seemed to have disappeared. Now there is Shmuratko. I thought he was great in Budapest earlier this year, then in Olympics, but he doesn’t seem to have technical base.

Many people are rightfully celebrating Camden's small medal.

I ran across this photo of him showing it off on Jackie Wong's Instagram page.

Ever since the pandemic, I've noticed something about certain people - even with a mask on, a person's positive energy can still fly right into your face. Camden is one of them.
