Well : plot twist per Skate Canada website... I am NOT happy. Nothing wrong to give two challengers to Roman. Of course. But why just him?

2023 Golden Spin of Zagreb

DECEMBER 6-9, 2023
SISAK, CROATIA
MEN
ROMAN SADOVSKY
WOMEN
PAIR
ICE DANCE
Yes!! My prayers have been answered🙏 !!! Maybe, they saw how amazing his skating skills are with his SP at Sectionals 😝
Now, he has two opportunities to prove himself to Skate Canada and to put out a nice top 24 SB score for 2023/2024 season. Hopefully, this will lessen the pressure for Romsky knowing he has two events back to back. I’m thrilled with this news!!

As for Conrad, fingers crossed he gets another spot. Hopefully, it is not too late to skate at Espoo.

:bang:

I'm not surprised about Roman being assigned there, but really... when they have tracking the number of athletes achieving the minimum TES across all disciplines as part of their strategic plan, and they have only one woman with the TES minimums...

If they want depth in all the disciplines (also part of their strategic plan!), how is this achieving that goal? They're doing good work in other areas, like with the changes in definitions for pairs/ice dance to allow for same-gender teams and having every competition be streamed for free, right down to the individual sections. Then I look at how singles is going, and it's frustrating. What exactly is their plan?
I do wonder about this 🤔

When I see a European skater have a bad performance, I think to myself, it doesn’t matter as this athlete will be skating in 6-8 events this season. Plenty of opportunity to achieve TES minimums and a good world ranking.

I was seeing the results of a Bulgarian event, this past weekend, and for the woman, Feign won with a score of 170+ with Nina getting bronze at exactly just 160. I thought to myself, Kaiya, Fiona, Justine or Sara-M could have all contended for a podium spot in this field.

I wonder if it is a cost issue. I just hate the fact we see our athletes mostly just domestically instead of internationally.

Well.. so why give two challengers in Europe to Roman and Justine and Kaiya got ACI? Is Skate Canada not backing their women? Not interested in spending money on them? With how sectionals went, women should be given more and more opportunities. There is WAY more depth in women than in men in Canadian skating. Seriously. I like Roman, though I have to say that I am not the most confident fan in his ability to deliver regularly under pressure. I wish him the best as he is truly a fabulous skater with perhaps the best or some of the best spins in the world.

BUT GIVE THE OTHERS a shot too ! Roman already has his TES minimums. Most of the men do. The women do not. And seriously, Conrad needs a second spot. Without Keegan around this year, he still should be regarded as Canada's leading man, at least until Nationals.

I’m shocked that Canada only has one entry. Like, that’s all they are sending.

Maybe, if a skater, on the National Team, doesn’t skate in a single GP event, they get assigned automatically to Challenger events. That is my only explanation.

I hope Conrad gets in to GP Finland 🇫🇮; Those two withdrawals are so late. Something tells me they will be taken by European skaters instead. 🤞 for Conrad; After Conrad’s interview about not knowing whether he has to prepare for another event or not, it seems like if a spot was available, he would surely take it, as it sounds like he is anxious to skate at another international event.

At this point, I am going to calm down :) I am just frustrated that Conrad almost has a better chance of getting a late invitation for Espoo, from the Finnish Federation, than getting a challenger assignment from his own federation.

BTW... with sectionals over... I guess bennet toman is no longer skating. I will miss him dearly. Same with matt markell.

Conrad didn't get an invite for Espoo. Starostin and Shmuratko did. I don't really care about either. I am officially done whining now about Espoo... all I have left is to voice my concerns about Skate Canada not giving his fair chance to compete as all the other top guys are getting another outing closer to Nationals and not Conrad.

And just like that.. NHK has a spot opened. but yeah... not even believing at this point. I have very little hope Conrad will be invited. Japanese Fed chose to invite Wesley and passed over Conrad so why would they now invite him??? MEH. Going to bed.

Sigh… I told u that I predicted they would give it to two European skaters and that is what happened. The European skaters already were scheduled to compete at other events. So, they didn’t need these Espoo spots, as much as Conrad. If I was Conrad, I would actually compete at Challenger and then put all my energy into focusing for Nationals.

Edit. Just saw that an opening spot is available for NHK now. Maybe, Conrad will be sent there. He can travel there with Wesley. 🤞 that this will happen

Of course. Europeans already have so many challengers around them, and they get priority for European GPs too for good reasons.
:)

I have given up my hopes. Conrad will not be at NHK. He will be at Nationals. I hope he can turn his season around and skate with joy and less pressure.

There is so much a fan can endure ;)

And I was right... Conrad will not be at NHK. A Selevko whose brother is already going (maybe it will be cheaper for NHK as they might share a bunk bed😬) has been invited. Alex is probably the lowest on the replacement list of eligible skaters and had no spots. Not only Conrad didn't get it but many other skaters were passed (Mark G, Maksim N etc) that were ahead on the list.... In any case, it's a wrap guys... Conrad was right to be worried. It explains the immense pressure he felt after placing high enough to be in the final flight and landing his first 2 quads in the LP... He froze... he knew he had everything to lose and he lost. So far this season, he has 0 ranking points and is very low on the season's best score. If he doesn't get other international assignments he is not going to be screwed only for this year but for next year as well.
Extremely sad for him and many of our skaters who are in this situation.

Hopefully he signed up for Challenge 🤞 It's a competition at least and he needs to have more competitions with his free.

That the skaters are having to depend on the misfortune of other skaters in order to have a chance at an assignment in this part of the season should not be acceptable. Skate Canada can't depend on that. They can't depend on Maddie being the only woman able to compete at Worlds.

If they want depth in singles, they need to put the work in to making sure that there is depth. I guess they're satisfied with how it's going at this point since I'm not sure what they're doing to change it.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if Conrad wins Nationals and another woman (probably from Quebec) without any minimums ends up on the podium.

Certainly Conrad could have been sent to Golden Spin, given that Roman will be going.

That he has not been listed for that suggests to me that he may not have wanted to go. Is it possible that he is injured, in the process of changing a program, or something like that?

Who knows? Conrad was very outspoken about worrying that SCI may be his last competition of the season apart from Nationals so I doubt he would pass on Golden Spin.

It's possible he is injured but I am not the kind to speculate about health of skaters. If they want to share something, they usually do so. At this point, since I lost my other son Jo Phan, I am being a very intense guardian of Conrad :) Maybe I need to adopt Edward so I can relax a bit, though he hasn't competed since Junior worlds, due to injury.

It is interesting that Conrad is the one getting left behind this year. He was the only one of the top contenders who did not bomb the short at Nationals last year. And what happens if Maddie has an injury before worlds. There is no one else at this point to send. And how would that look if CAN does not have a skater at their own worlds. Or would they get to enter a lady without the mins since it is at home?

No need even for an injury... Just catching the flu could do it. Justine has the SP minimums. The lp is not as hard to get. She also medaled at aci. she is also local and could fill in last minute... they need to send her asap to get her mins

I don't think they'd let them enter a woman without the minimums. The ISU uses the minimums to limit entries, so it doesn't matter to them if there aren't any Canadian women at Worlds.

I really hope that they aren't expecting Kaiya/Sara-Maude/Justine/Gabby to finish getting their World's minimums at 4CC (they each have one of the short or free). That isn't the place to do that. It isn't fair to them and it isn't fair to Maddie.
