Does anyone know if the pair of Caidence Derenisky / Raine Eberl is competing this season? I remember them from Nationals. I really enjoyed their skating and also thought it was interesting they were from Saskatchewan since I don't recall too many skaters from there.

Fun (-ish?) fact, they're one of just three pairs out of the 12 at 2019/20 Jr Nationals who are still skating together, the other two being Laurin/Ethier and Carignan/Pierro.

The pandemic really hit pairs very hard, so it's super encouraging to see so many new and promising teams popping up left and right (in Canada, but also in other countries).

Maybe, that is why Skate Canada didn’t send her to events last year?

They sent Lia to Finlandia last season to compete as a senior single after she had started competing with Trennt in pairs, so that wasn't an issue for them. They could still send her out to a Challenger as a single if they wanted. Or she could go to Zagreb for pairs if she and Gabriel are promising. Skate Canada looks a lot quicker to send out pairs to Challengers.

I think she'll try to compete both disciplines this season since she did go to Cranberry and get her 4CC minimums. She already has a bye to Nationals as a medalist, so she doesn't have to worry about qualifying for singles. She did get a new short, but looking at the photos from Figure Skaters Online she is reusing her costume from last season for it. That'll save money for the pairs side since that'll be two new routines.

Fiona : she was given a spring assignment but as mentioned, had a concussion. I don't think she was training pairs then already...

Pairs for Fiona : she is training with Bruno Marcotte. Gabriel lost his partner. Maybe she decided to try, like Lia did. Same coach, same rink?

Don't forget that Meagan and many others (Julianne) did both for quite a while.

And of course, she is the daughter of a pairs Canadian champion.

I'd say, let her try it... and things will unfold. I really like her as a singles skater. Her jumps are so big. She has very nice presence. Either way, the fields are stacked and opportunities are slim. In pairs, there 5-6 teams that are going to compete for 3 spots. If we are worried for Brooke and Ben, imagine a brand new team. In women, Fiona lacks a steady 3-3. She did try for the first time the 3s-3t at Cranberry cup and fell. Of course, it doesn't mean that this combo would not work out in the future. In the LP, she had a nice 3loop-eu-3s combo (at Nationals) which compensated but with Madeline, Uliana, Kaiya + all others and juniors doing the tougher 3-3 already... it's kind of a 3axel for men. If you don't have a solid one in the SP, it's very tough.

Realistically, Fiona is almost 19, and if the triple-triple isn't stable in competition by now it's probably a longshot that it will happen. It's a bit of an oddity because she has nice big jumps, but it is what it is. If her coaches feel that way, going the pairs route makes a lot of sense.

If I agree that acquiring a steady 3-3 is not easy at 19, Osmond only added the triple loop at about that age too. Patrick Chan added a quad salchow at the end of his career... and he was already quite old when he did add his trademark quad toe and the quad-triple

Interestingly, I was able to find out that Fiona had a 3S+3T already a the start of last season, she did one at the Next Gen competition (and wasn't sent to any JGP... Still confused )

Her Short is from ca. 58:20 in this archived livestream, and while a stricter technical panel probably would have given this a q on both the 3S and 3T, it actually doesn't look half-bad rotation-wise.

With the step out and other issues, I can see why she went for a steadier 3lz-2t as a senior.

I was just looking at GP assignments... I feel that Skate Canada should play the game better in ice dance... if they did, Chloe and Brendan may have a shot at qualifying for JGP... if not, they may end up just short.

I noticed that too 4everchan. They are in tough in their next event when there are easier line ups in other events. Can Skate Canada make changes at this stage? Fear that they can actually end up 4th or 5th in JPN.

i think it's too late, because in order to play switcharoo like other feds do so well, they need to be registered as Substitute.... they aren't.... Martina and Charly will be in a tougher field too in their second event... but with 15 points, they can still make it... I just wished that Skate Canada played the game... they don't... they give the assignments out and that's all...

Particularly when we're talking about traveling all the way to Japan, I think there's merit in giving skaters certainty about where and when they're competing.

In the case of Nguyen/Giang, them going to Osaka is probably also about allowing them and Kim/Lee to share the costs of coach travel.

Yes. This is understood and what I was thinking. However, it's uncanny that Skate Canada is de facto also helping a Korean team at this point, instead of focusing on getting one of its own team on the JGPF. Flights, travel, coaching costs, etc all of this makes perfect sense and I think most of us are aware of this, but then, other Feds still play the game properly. What is best for Skate Canada : to secure a JGPF spot for their top team or to help them (and a Korean team) share costs? At least, if it were two Canadian teams from the same coach, I could swallow the pill easier. How much money is saved? Is it worth forfeiting a JGPF berth?

But also, you could just as easily make the case for any of the teams other than Neset/Markelov to also switch out of Osaka, and none of their feds have either, so I don't think Skate Canada is behaving differently from other federations in this.

We have seen Russia doing it quite a lot. Japan too. I am sure the USA play the game too.

I was convinced that Panetta and Farand would team up, as both were minus a partner. Surprised that it is Fiona and Gabriel, but I wish them well and look forward to see what they can do. Has Chloe retired, then, or is she seeking a partner?

No idea about Chloe but she has a lot of issues with landing things. It may be best for Gabriel to have a partner who is a solid jumper
