Day 1 of the Spanish Championships starts with an Advanced Novice double-bill. 20 girls, followed by 8 boys. The girls are arranged into a group of 6; followed by a group of 7; followed by a resurfacing; followed by a group of 7.

Skater #4, Janire IDIAKEZ (EUS). That's a blast from the past!

I remember her as a guest skater at the Cyprus Championships many moons ago. Janire had the same coach as Cypriot skaters Daniella Vanessa Ipsarides and Laura Farran, Pavel Chernousov, and he would frequently enter the three of them into the same events. And since his other students were competing in the Cyprus Championships, he would also enter Janire as a guest skater. Get her some more competition experience.

I haven't heard tell of her in the past 5 years. And I was actually wondering about her a few weeks ago. So, it is good to now find out that she is still competing.

You know, I might just pause 4 Nationals so that I can watch her. I haven't seen her since she was in Basic Novices, so it will be interesting to see what she is like now.

Well, Janire is a LOT taller than when I last saw her (well, she was only about 10 back then!), but she is still recognisable!

Fall on first jump.

Not great landing on the second jump.

First part of combination jump lovely. But not great landing on the second part.

Her spins were good.

To be honest, she doesn't look to have a lot of confidence.

Oh. My. Goodness. I think that might be Pavel Chernousov that met her coming off the ice. The hair may be greyer, but that does look like the guy I met back in 2017. Don't know who the younger coach is.

EDIT: I found her club's website, and the guy I thought was Pavel is actually former British skater Jonathan Levers. Well, they do look similar! And the younger coach is actually Janire's team-mate Iker Oyarzabal, who will be competing in Senior Men at the end of the day.​

She goes into 3rd, with a score of 31.97.

We stay with the Juniors, but move from the girls to the chaos! It was supposed to be 13 boys, arranged into two groups of 4; followed by a resurfacing; followed by a group of 5. But, skater #3 has withdrawn, so we are down to 3 in Group 1, and 12 altogether.

I didn't actually notice until there now, but there is a 2 hour break between the Advanced Novice girls finishing, and the Basic Novice Ice Dancers starting.

After the siesta time, we now start a run of Ice Dance competitions. And they are all being held back-to-back, in the format that I like! 1 Basic Novice partnership, and 1 Advanced Novice partnership doing their first Pattern Dances; followed by a group of 3 Junior partnerships doing their Short Dance.

But, to complicate matters, I think there is a mistake in the timetable at the bottom of the Entries / Results page. Because it has the Advanced Novices doing PD2 before they do PD1. But the Time Schedule PDF's have PD1 before PD2.

I will do a combined post for the first 3 competitions, and then another combined post for the second 3 competitions.
