2024-25 British and Irish figure skating

I'll be getting tickets when they go on sale in a couple of weeks. Should be a great event.

We could have 3 dance and 2 ladies. Kristen is looking in great form and could scrape a top 10 in euros. Same with B&H, top 11 for sure with F&G in the top 2 will do it.

We'll qualify a 2nd pairs team but don't think we have a second senior pair do we?

With the men's, who knows if Ed skates lights out. I'm ever optimistic 🤣
Definitely a chance of a 3rd Dance Team. I don't think Harry and Lydia are competing now so doesn't look like a 2nd Pairs entry.

Would love Kristen and/or Ed to finish top 10 but that feels at the super optimistic end of the scale. And whilst I hope they perform well at both Euros and Worlds I think on balance the lights out performance would be better at Worlds so they can qualify an Olympics spot

I'm afraid that a top 10 finish would probably be quite surprising for either Ed or Kristen. They would each need an improvement of around 30-40 points on their current ISU PB. Ana and Luke have a realistic chance of a top 10 finish. Lilah and Lewis have a very good chance of a podium finish and Phebe and James have a chance of a top 10 if they go completely clean other teams mess up. Based on current season's best, Phebe and James would be 12th, and the Finns who are immediately above them tend to be pretty consistent.

Lily Matthias / Henry Privett-Mendoza are announced as a new ice dance team. https://www.threads.net/@anything_goe/post/DFBW-P8xCMi

https://www.instagram.com/lily.matthias/p/DFBRVEGRHZK/?img_index=1 from Lily: "Henry and I are so happy to announce our partnership representing Great Britain🇬🇧. We started our journey a few months ago and have quite literally been finding our feet together.

Everyone who knows us knows we have been best friends for a long time and this to some may have been a foregone conclusion! We are delighted to have established a coaching team who are fully supportive of both of our studies at our respective Universities and my coaching commitments in Sheffield. They are happy to work together as we balance pursuing our studies and achieving our goals on the ice. We look forward to training in Sheffield and Villard de Lans."

I really enjoyed Henry's expressive and beautiful singles skating, and he's coached by Yebin Mok, so I'm very interested in seeing more of this team.

On the day when we are reeling from the news that British Eurosport will be closing at the end of February, and all the content moving over to WBD’s premium sport network TNT Sport (meaning that you will have to pay £31 per month to watch smaller sports rather than £8 per month), some good news!

Gosh - that's unusual, isn't it? - I can't remember Europeans being shown on UK TV before, not even highlights. Hopefully, this will set precedent for screening all of Sheffield Euros next year.

I can’t remember the BBC ever showing Euros before either. It’s normally only Worlds and the Olympics.

And for that matter, I can’t remember them showing the Short Programmes before. It's normally only the Free Skates that the BBC shows.

The morning sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will also be shown on the TV! But, that is all they are showing on the TV, because of other live sports taking priority.

Not sure if that means that youtube will be geoblocked or not.

Oh, that’s a point. If the BBC have the commentators that they normally have, we could be grateful to have the YouTube option available.

Well, I have got into the habit of watching skating on Opera anyway, so its no bother switching on the VPN if needed.

Anyway, please find below the times for the TV coverage.

Hope this helps

So the ISU streaming on Youtube will still be available to UK viewers, even though BBC are covering the event? I sincerely hope so, I have taken time off work to watch it all, but no way will I watch the BBC stream with that awful Kat Downes commentating :eek2:

On another matter, I am hoping to go to Sheffield next year, still got my fingers crossed the Russian skaters will be there.

So the BBC are only showing some of the events? (and it's only on red button, which I can't access?)

I'm feeling torn. I know that I *should* be pleased that the BBC are covering figure skating, but I like the ISU coverage and don't want to lose that...

I'm really not happy about the Eurosport change. Jumping from £6.99 per month to £30.99 is huge. Yes, there is the option of the 'Basic' package for £3.99 per month, but it sounds like that doesn't include cycling at all. I'm not sure what I am going to do. The only cycling currently on mainstream UK TV is the Tour de France and Tour of Britain. ITV aren't keeping the rights to the former beyond this year (ITV's choice) and the Tour of Britain has a rather uncertain future. On Eurosport, there was cycling to watch most days between Feb-Sept and I did watch stuff most days. I have no interest in any of the other sports which the TNT thing will provide.

No it's all being streamed on i-player and BBC Sport in addition to the Red Button coverage. And it's for all the Short programmes and Free as well.

Last year for Worlds they took the ISU Feed and commentary so maybe they will for this as well. Guess we will find out tomorrow. I wonder who is doing the ISU commentary - we know it won't be Mark. Chris Howarth maybe?

I hope you all will be alright. I haven't seen a thing of Europeans last year, because our National Public Broadcaster (like the BBC) decided to provide some. Yeah, just the top 6 at rediculous times, and not even all disciplines. I was so frustrated because the ISU channel was blocked. It seems to be ok this year even if there are Dutchies in 3 disciplines. You have even more, so I truly hope you can watch everything and not just a top 6 (or top whatever) of the Ice Dance!

I can watch stuff that's on Iplayer. :) It's linear TV which is the problem, because the reception here is very poor. I can sometimes get either BBC or ITV/channel 4, but rarely both, and the reception has a habit if disappearing halfway through something. We lost our reception when the Bilsdale mast burnt down, and are just outside of the range of the new mast. Pontop Pike is much, much nearer - but there's a fell in the way which blocks the reception from there!

Sorry, I should have made clear that the iPlayer and the BBC website was showing all the comeptitions. But I didn't want to repeat what @throw_triple_flip had already said. The purpose of my post was just to add the bit of extra information about the linear coverage.

I wasn't interested in cycling, but growing up, I got interested in so many sports that were shown on Eurosport. Motorbike racing, figure skating, ski sports, snooker, women's football (before it got ruined by becoming popular). I got interested in them because they were in our package. I have no interest whatsoever in mainstream sports.

I admit that we already have TNT Sports. It was free with our broadband when it orignally launched as BT Sport, and we kept it for the MotoGP when they started charging for it. That said, we downgraded to Standard Definition quite a few years ago, because the price for High Definition had got so high that we couldn't justify it. After all, MotoGP is the only thing we watch on it. (Yes, I know we could subscribe to the coverage on the MotoGP website for a good bit less, but you can't watch it on the TV, and the World Feed commentators are not as good. They're too young, and their knowledge doesn't go back far enough).

I was hoping that when Eurosport and TNT were brought together, that all the non-mainstream sports would be moved to the Standard (i.e. Eurosport) tier, and the Premium (i.e. TNT Sports) tier would be kept for just the mainstream sports. That way, we could cancel the Premium tier and just keep the Standard tier. But, no, they are doing away with the Standard tier, and putting everything onto the Premium tier.

Do the bosses not understand that paying silly money for stuff they don't want is putting people off subscribing? If they divided it up the way I described, it would attract more people to each package!

It's the same with Sky Sports. We currently get the Formula 1 bundled with the HD pack on Sky+. But I know that at some stage we will have to give in and switch to SkyQ, and that bundle isn't available on it. Provided it is a reasonable price, I would be happy enough to pay for a Sky Sports package consisting of the F1 and the other non-mainstream sports. After all, it would be nice to have the netball. But no, to get the F1, you have to take out the whole shebang. And there is no way we are doing that! So, we are sticking with Sky+ until we are forced to switch, at which stage we will probably just cancel Sky completely, since the channel we watch most, Eurosport, will be gone.

So far, I have seen uproar amongst the cycling, motorbike racing, and snooker fans. They don't want to be subsidising the football, rugby and cricket rights, and are prepared to do without rather than pay the extra. So I really can see this decision backfiring big time.

At least, I hope it does!

The worst change of package was when they (I think it was Eurosport) had the cheek to inform me with a letter which contained the following sentence: 'we have improved your package'. As if they knew what an improvement would be for me. It wasn't. I was so angry I unsubscribed for a while, then came back because I missed Figure Skating. Since the ISU channel shows everyting, no worries on the score anymore (and I've unsubscribed again) and I don't even know which sports if any are shown on Eurosport. But, of course, the Public broadcaster mustn't state they have the rights, and then hardly show anything. The ISU channel gets bloacked and there's nowhere else to go!

Just to let you know, not only is there a figure skating story on the BBC teletext service today (a very rare occurrance), but it is 11 pages long rather than the usual 2 pages!

Unsurprisingly, it is about Fear / GIbson, and bigging up their medal hopes at Europeans.

Chris Howarth, I think - he's definitely here in Tallinn

Fantastic to see Ana and Luke in 4th after the SP! Also fantastic to see the BBC televising Europeans, I'll have to make sure to watch some to show my appreciation 😁

I'm waiting for payday but definitely hoping to get tickets for next year.

And in the Sport section, too! I used to subscribe to a now-defunct British newspaper that occasionally had a bit about figure skating, but always put it in the Entertainment section :angry2:
