2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Wow! I knew there was something off when Minsol wasn’t at the Korean JGP selection event in Korea. Minsol was robbed off of third place for JWC spot last season. I could tell she was upset with coming in fourth place out of Junior athletes. Losing to the Kim twins who were given higher GOE and PCS scores than deserved compared to Minsol. So, maybe, she knows she won’t be top three in Korea, but, can be solid in Canada.

Of course, this is just one event. But, interesting that she is skating for Granite Club. I would love this transfer to happen. Lia Cho and Minsol Kwon can push each other, in the future. Also, I’d be in heaven with my two favourite juniors skating for Canada. She is skating as a Senior at this event.

Edit: I’m so happy she is not injured and ecstatic just to see her skate.

Canada didn't need Lim and Quan. They had other junior ID teams who were ahead of them. I don't think Lim and Quan would have got to where they are now if they had been representing Canada.
i agree with that ;) but it's a very good gift for Korea :)
They started to get opportunities because they represented Korea and did not have any rivals there, and they then grasped the opportunities with both hands. I don't think they would have had the opportunities in the first place if they had stayed with Canada.

I think Korea do need Minsol. She seems more popular than Jia Shin and the twins and is therefore important for the popularity of the sport in Korea.
Minsol is super popular for sure. But at some point, people will forget the kitten program and cuteness.

Also, I was just thinking 🤔
if Minsol competes for Canada 🇨🇦
2024-2026: Minsol (JR), Lia (Novice)
2026-2030: Minsol (SR), Lia (JR)
My two faves will be split perfectly during the upcoming two Olympic cycles. After this season, if Lia wins Juniors, they can push each other at Seniors domestically. But, internationally, they will be in different categories. So, I can go for both of them 👏

The kitten program maybe, the cuteness and the rare joyous sparkle - even as it matures into charm - not so forgettable. I have high hopes if her coaches do right by her that we have a real star in the making.

What ! :jaw:

Does Minsol Kwon will skate for Canada ?

If yes ! That an amazing new ! She will push Kaiya and Madeline for sure. Not a bad thing to have her for Canada.

Does Minsol Kwon will skate for Canada ?
There's no confirmation yet. Right now this is confirmation that she's been training at the Granite Club and is competing in a Canadian domestic competition. There are Junior Ice Dance teams competing there who represent Sweden and Czechia (and list themselves as representing those federations, not everyone does it.)

It is a shame that Minsol has to wait until 2030 and Lia til 2034 to make the Olympics. Both of them are so incredibly talented already. It will be awesome to watch them improve for Team Canada through the years.

Minsol wouldn't have the time to get citizenship in time for the 2026 Olympics even if she was age-eligible. Maybe she could have petitioned to be granted citizenship extraordinarily for sports success, but that would not be a guarantee.

I wasn't expecting Minsol to switch to Canada (assuming she does), but I'm happy for her! She's ony of my fav juniors and I was so disappointed that she wasn't going to be competing on the junior grand prix this season.

Also, no offense to them, but the Kim twins should not have been put above Minsol at nats and gone to worlds over her...

JGP Ljubljana entries:

Men
Grayson Long

Women
Hetty Shi

Ice Dance
Cincon-Debout/Celestino
Veillon/Brandys

All entries are pending confirmation on the Events page (same with JGP Gdansk.)

indeed : there is no way it would happen for 2026... even 2030 is tights... it's a 6-7 years process apparently. I am not even sure Deanna got hers yet.

So, for the singles events:

Girls

1) Lulu Lin - 2 events
2) Hetty Shi - 2 events
3) Megan Woodley - 1 event
4) TBD

I wonder who they will send to China. I really thought they would give a spot to Aleksa or Kara. The fact they picked Megan, must be because she was the highest Junior finisher at Cranberry. Canada must not place a lot of weight on Challenger/National results.

Boys

1) Anthony Paradis - 2 events
2) Grayson Long - 2 events
3) David Bodnar - 1 event
4) John Kim - 1 event
5) William Chan - 1 event
6) Edward - 1 event
7) TBD (China)

I’m not sure how many spots Canada has leftover. They may give David Bodnar a second event. Maybe, two spots to remaining candidates. Hoping David Howes is one of them.

Edit: I added Edward as I only remembered her was selected for an event.

I am rooting for Eddy :) they may be waiting as late as possible as he is still recovering...

BTW.. you are suffering from Skate Canada's name typos ;) It's David Bondar :)

David Howes has very little chance of getting an outing. His skates this summer were very weak. It's disappointing but that's life I guess.

I am curious about your conclusions on the 2 spots for the women... Do we have the info somewhere of that's your conclusions ? I have been out of the loop the last few weeks...

I forgot that Eddy is already going to an event with Anthony. So, for boys add:

6) Edward - one event

Saine has posted the entries for 6/7 JGP events already. So, almost all the spots are taken

I think the last spot for the women will go to Kara. She's not entered into the Skate Ontario October competition, which would be close to it.

Plus if they gave David Bondar a second assignment, they'd be able to save money since they share a coach :D He's scored 120+ in his free skates over the summer, I think he's shown enough consistency for that spot. He's entered into Skate Ontario October, but so far none of the skaters with second spots (other than Ice Dance) have withdrawn from their domestic competitions.

John Kim - this is his last year of eligibility as a Junior, he's moving up to Senior domestically in the October competition. I'd like to see him try a Challenger if he keeps improving instead of a second JGP.

Parker is my bet for the last spot for Men (they have two spots at JGP Wuxi for the men.) He's had a good transition to Junior, I think Skate Canada would be interested in giving him the experience.

I think David B may get a second spot if he skates well at Ostrava this weekend (I almost put him in 5th place on my predictions for the event, but decided I'd better not in case it jinxed him! :ROFLMAO:). There are two spots for the China JGP and I think, based on next gen and summer competitions (which someone previously said were the criteria), they are between David Bondar, David Li and Parker Heiderich. David Howes and David Shteyngart have unfortunately been quite poor in all their competitions over the Summer, so I would be surprised if they got a spot.

For the girls, I suspect the final spot will be either Kara (she seems to have been favoured by Skate Canada in recent seasons) or Aleksa Volkova, with Reese Rose and Mely-Ann having an outside chance.

Ice dance I don't have a clue - I don't follow it closely enough.

There aren't any pairs at the final JGP.
