2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

He's also within .25 of getting world CTES minimum, having improved his short program TES by around 10 points! If he can improve the FS TES by .25, he'll have it!
Oh wow!! So, he can technically be sent to worlds with a decent free skate. Wow

Just rewatched Matthew's program and did he ever get lowballed on GOE and PCS. Yes I know he skated early and is new to big events yet still, USA skaters can come out of no where and score big. If he was skating for the USA he would have scored 5-10 points higher.
According to skating scores, the US judge gave Matthew his highest marks! The Canadian judge was around the middle of all the judges.

I am concerned about Maddie... Am wondering whether they should have waited before naming the Worlds team, like they did with the men...

yes and no... the problem is that even when clean, and a solid 3-3, judges don't reward sara-maude. If she didn't have good skating skills, fair but she's quite a good skater having started out as an ice dancer.

But to be honest after seeing the scores I have not even been able to watch Maddie's or Katherine's programs. If a CAN lady does not make the free dance at worlds does that mean we will not have a lady entry at the Olympics? Cause at this point it is looking like we may not have a lady in the free skate. But thinking at this point it may be a big wake up call if that happened.

24th place in the short last season was 53.81, Maddie was above that here and around what she got there last season (59.65 to place 17th in the short.) Maddie should be fine to make the free skate. In case she doesn't, there's the Olympic Qualifying Event in Beijing.

I have some difficulty to accept that Kaiya season is over. She has so much potential !!
I wish that she would have be send to 4CC.

i actually think it's best she's not competing again this season. She was improving fast with her new training team. Competitions take time away from training... We could see a brand new and improved Kaiya in the fall if she keeps getting better and better, the way it seems to be happening.

Agreed. Kaiya is reportedly re-working significant aspects of her jump and spin technique. It is best for her to consolidate such changes and get them thoroughly ingrained into muscle memory before doing any high profile competitions, and that is something which takes time. Under the pressure of competition, skaters tend to revert to muscle memory - and, for Kaiya at the moment, that means going back to technique which she is trying to unlearn. The extended break from competition now should help her in the future.

Also, Sara-Maude and Katherine Medland-Spence had outperformed Kaiya this season. They earnt their selections. Selecting Kaiya based purely on past success and ignoring current form would not have been fair on any of them. Maddie has a new FP which she did for the first time at nationals. She needs to compete that at 4CC and get feedback from the judges if she is going to go to Worlds.

A very unexpected title defence, but I'm delighted to see it. Not expecting this to repeat in Boston, but it makes things more interesting going in than would otherwise have been the case.

Given that next is the Olympic season, this was probably Piper & Paul's farewell to 4CC. This is Paul's eleventh 4CC appearance, and sixth medal, having made his debut at the 2009 Olympic test event (also Evan Bates' debut).

Interesting that Piper and Paul won because of the lead they had in the RD , where at last years worlds they lost the gold because they were so far behind in the RD. Maybe the judges finally telling Chock and Bates that they will not keep overlooking their mistakes.

Also, Piper and Paul's programs are so well designed that they are memorable. I will be rewatching them years and years to come.. just like I have watched many of their past programs. I don't think I will have any desire to watch Madi and Evan's programs once the season is over. I have watched their alien and snake programs again ... So, perhaps, judges are finally able to recognize Carol Lane's meticulous work in designing story-telling and memorable works of choreography.

In regards to our men - wondering how bad would it be if CAN didn't even send a man to worlds this year. As if looks now whom ever they send will have to up their game to even make the Free Skate. And our ladies are not much better.

well.. it would be very bad for the team event...
we need 3 disciplines to get an olympic spot to participate ... we have strong pairs and dance... and i am sure they would like a shot at a team event participation...

So, send Roman and tell him to rotate his jumps :) he should qualify for the LP. Maddie should qualify too... That's all we need really.
Not sending a man /woman would mean they have to pick up their spot at the final qualifier event in China... not such a good deal.

I think Roman is showing some improvement in stamina. Not all the jumps worked out but he wasn't dead at the end of the program so to me, he's been working hard. Maddie, we will see if she can reproduce what she did at Nationals... if she were to do this at worlds, she would be in top 15 easily.

And that would mean that Canada would qualify for the team event.

Send Roman, if he doesn't make the free skate, then he doesn't make the free skate and someone has to go to Beijing. They won't get an Olympic spot by not sending anyone.

I’m so proud of team Canada 🇨🇦
Four medals:

One 🥇
One 🥈
Two 🥉 🥉

We won more medals than any other country 😝 at this event.

Canada seems to work better in partnership with the other gender 🤗

Dance - We are the best country in dance fighting with USA. We have the leading camp in our backyard

Pairs - I think Canada has the best three teams total than any other country. I was really shocked with how well Lia and Trentt did here. Also, Max and Deanna had their best feee skate of the season. Also, it is so nice to see Bruno and Meghan lead the charge with their coaching. The podium felt like a podium sweep since the Japanese team are coached by Canadians.

Then, the opposite 😞

Men - We have no choice but to send Roman. He did the best at 4CC and he is the Canadian champion. Fingers crossed he lands the 4S, 3Lz 3T and 3A at Worlds. I think he can afford only one mistake with these jumping elements to make it to the free skate. This is the goal here. There is zero chance of a top ten finish. If he defends his 19th place finish from last season, I will be happy. This is the category I worry about the most moving forward. We have a junior, David, with good TES potential (3A and possibly a quad in the future) and Anthony, with good PCS (no 3A and I’m not sure he has quad potential in him). Wish we could merge these two talents with one another. However, I will enjoy watching them develop moving forward.

Women - I’m seeing improvements in our depth of ladies. I think 190+ may be needed for top ten due to how well the JPN, KOR, USA skaters are skating. Maddie is our only 190+ potential lady and our Canadian champion. She is 50/50 capable of surpassing this score. Sara Maude surprised me with her SP at 4CC. She loves skating at 4CC. I hope she skates her free skate well enough to be as close to 180 as possible. Would secretly love it, if she beats Maddie as I prefer her skating. Katherine, this was her worst SP. But, with no pressure now, I hope she skates lights out in the free. She just needs to enjoy this experience. I never thought I’d see Maddie followed by two potential 180+ plus skaters this season.
