2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

It's not much different than seeing it through the lens of the overall medal table, which Canada is topping at 4CC, as you said, because of their gold too. That's also seeing it from isolated results, although as you say you are seeing it form a glass half full perspective. But with glass half full there's also people who see it with a glass half empty perspective, and it's me. This isn't a Fan Fest after all.
well.. we were discussing 4CC... so of course, we will look at these results... :)

The argument about the fan fest is not really relevant. Discussion is welcome here. I mean, some of us blame Skate Canada, discuss Maddie's consistency issues, talk about Kaiya's under rotation issues or spin levels... and Anthony's quest in acquiring harder and much needed jumps... So it's not about that.

You can start labeling skaters this way in the edge and people will react the same way. As I said, maybe it's something that sits well wit you, it doesn't with some of us here. There is no need to try justifying your point of view. I am not dumb. I understand it. It is just not part of me to label athletes that way, and furthermore to compare athletes from different countries with these labels.

A skater can only compete against who is present at the competition. All the skaters who competed this week were 4CC team...

I mean, don't you get tired when some of the Russian fans call the whole world B skaters, especially since they have been restricted from competing ? It gets heavy right? :)

I couldn't care less since I'm talking about A/B/C Teams, not levels of the skaters. An A Team can be not competitive, A C Team can be competitive.

Well, again, Canada's 4CC team won 4 medals. You can call it the way you want, that will not change that.

Just saw your team for junior Worlds (on the website). Nice. It was announced earlier of course, but seeing them put together as a team: good pairs and dancers, the wonderful Anthony (I don't care that he hasn't got the 3A yet, he's one of those juniors who are highly entertaining and is very mature in his expression) and David who is on a great learning curve. I am sure the girls are also promising, but I just don't follow the women much, let alone the juniors. But I definitely am going to watch the championships!

Why have I just read over three pages of US v Canada arguing? I can't even work out what you were actually arguing about! 😵‍💫

With junior worlds this week, I think we should celebrate the recovery and return of Lulu Lin, Kemp/Elizarov and Ariano Kent/Laliberte-Laurent instead.

I'm new here and I've noticed there seems to be really miserable negative people on this site that have to be rude about a lot of skaters, and it makes me sad for them. I will always bring positivity here. I love watching skating and I don't care if someone is only doing doubles or doesn't score 200+ every competition, as long as the skater is happy with their skate its worth it to me.

Please, share your positive feeling towards skaters as much as you feel so. It is indeed much needed and appreciated.
I cannot skate.... so even a waltz jump is a huge achievement for me ;) I love figure skating from a young age... wanted to skate but it was way too costly for my family. Since then, I have been following the sport and I have seen the best and worst years in Canadian skating.. Still always a devoted fan. This forum is full of great info and great people who share this common appreciation for skating. Many give in a lot of hours to create contests, competition threads (be careful if you venture in those, sometimes they get a bit too intense) and even interview skaters to create articles/videos. It's a great resource to find out where to watch things as well. But like everywhere on the internet, there are negative voices at time.... You can always ignore these users by using the said ignore function, that way, you will not see their posts... you will however see that they posted if someone quoted them... but still will have the option not to read them.

Almost the entire Canadian team feels like "a recovery" or "second chance"
Injuries for Lulu, K/E, Marly, we can even put Anthony in there because he is in much better shape now.
Second chance for Sandrine and Quentin who had to move up to senior having lost precious junior time due to covid lockdowns... they get a chance to compete as junior which is really their level.
etc etc ;)

It makes sense why Skate Canada patiently waited on her.... Concussions are a different animal than a sprained ankle or something that will prevent the skater from even walking... Concussions need a lot of time and rest but once they get better, there is no damage to the jumping parts of the body. It sounds like Lulu and her coaching staff took the rehabilitation seriously. I wish her all the best,

Yes, best wishes to our Juniors and hope that they have their best skates possible.

4everchan mentioned COVID and the effect on skaters and their training here in Canada (and elsewhere but not familiar with what happened in other countries). I do remember skaters in Alberta only being allowed to practice on outdoor rinks that first winter. I remember Roman posting videos of the difficulty of getting sufficient ice time in the GTA. And I remember fondly the entirely virtual 2021 Skate Canada Challenge competition organized by Skate Canada and Ted Barton. Judges were virtual and the event took place on several rinks across Canada. Just to provide an opportunity for competition for our developing skaters in a year when everything else was cancelled. This was just 4 years ago and no doubt the knock-on effects are still being felt in our skater development programmes. Please note - I was and am fully in support of the public health measures taken back then by our governments. Thousands are alive today that wouldn't have been without those measures (maybe I am one of them).

So we should take a moment to appreciate the talent of our young junior team and wish them the best as they compete against the rest of the world. And all the support we can provide for their future development. After all, figure skating is not just about who won more medals but the beauty and athleticism of the sport. That is why I am a fan.

You know, Canada has never had an issue producing good jumpers. As a matter of fact, Canada was, in the distant past, a groundbreaker (first triple lutz, first triple axel, first quad, first quad combo)... etc Lately, it's a different story, I will give you that, but if our skaters were known before for their great jumping abilities, I don't know why they wouldn't get back there.
Not in my time. I don't see anyone in Canada junior men who skates like Lazarev, Voronov or Kolesnikov. Kolesnikov in particular has better PCS than Paradis, and his jumps are art. Maybe Kim, I dunno, but his stability issues were very troubling at nationals. I hope Bondar' does well at JWC. Then at least there would be something to look forward to.

gogolev was a jumping wonder when he was 12-13... could do all quads but the axel...
conrad jumped all quads in training too
nic nadeau had the loop, lutz and toe prior to injury...
even joe phan, toe, salchow, loop in training..

those are before your time ?

I will look for Kolesnikov to see about his skating skills.. i have never heard of him so i gotta look from my own eyes when skating skills are concerned:)

Katherine can be added to the list of skaters who got sick at 4CC, she had it during the free:

It's a shame that's how her first ISU championship ended, hopefully she can have a better experience if she goes next season. And hopefully all the skaters at Junior Worlds are staying healthy

Thank you! I did not know of the ignore function, thanks for letting me know. Thanks for the warning on the competition threads. I knew there would be heated debates but people arguing over who is b or a team or saying someone is unskilled or should just retire because they are not jumping quads or 3a is insane takes.

The ignore function has improved. It used to be that you would not see posts from someone you ignore, but if someone quoted them, the quoted version of their post would appear. I believe that now, you only see that they are being quoted, not the text of the quoted post.

Yes, that's true.

Oh and by the way, welcome @GinaHatim! :love3::wave2::love3:

I know she was no longer repping Canada, but Brooke McIntosh and Marco Zandron have split. I can't say I'm surprised as they weren't doing particularly well compared to what they did with their previous partners. Do you have any spare senior pairs men for Brooke to pair up with?

... you are correct... very not surprising... well, Brooke is taller so she'd need one of those giant maples. If she is looking to find someone as tall as Mimar or Zandron, I cannot think of anyone right now in Canada who is also looking... Bryan is way too short. Thierry, if not already retired, is even shorter.
