Senior Challenger/International Event Selection document - https://skatecanada.ca/wp-content/u...enior-Challenger-and-International-Events.pdf

It's just domestic competitions in the 2023-24 or 2024-25 seasons instead of 2024 Nationals. I don't think they'd have many skaters to send if they used Nationals as the benchmark.

Fee-Ann and Matthew Challenger assignments, Matthew was close enough at Challenge 🙏
Ik lots of ppl hate on skate Canada for lack of international assignments but looking at their rules I think that the key word they value for is consistently bc it’s not just one time to achieve these scores but the doc specifically says at multiple comps specifically. If we look at the assignments from this perspective it acc makes a lot of sense imo. They don’t want to create one hit wonders but rather want skaters who can go out and deliver consistency (prolly cuz Canadian skaters particularly singles are some of the most notorious inconsistent skaters)

Except the skaters that they choose aren't any more consistent. Skate Canada sends out skaters who only do a short program at a summer competition, but because they have a GP assignment, they get a Challenger assignment when they haven't shown the consistency Skate Canada wants. The document says that both the short and free need to be competed at a summer competition, but can make exceptions, so the rules are whatever Skate Canada wants them to be for consistency.

Plus skaters who can execute high technical content consistently at the international level are unicorns no matter the country.

I just want Fee-Ann Landry and Matthew Newnham Challenger assignments already. They don't get out internationally -> they keep competing domestically -> they don't learn how to compete up to the level of skaters from other countries.

Grayson Long, James Cha (5th at Novice Nationals) and Natasha Hewitt are all entered at Skate Milwaukee for the Junior events beginning on Monday.
I thought skate Milwaukee was strictly for USA JGP selection. Nice!! I will add Skate Milwaukee to my watch list now… thanks for the information

Some rule updates for this season from Skate Canada:

Start Orders for SP/RD at Nationals for skaters with Byes (GP assignment/Sr. Nationals medal/JGPF qualification) -
Competitors with a Bye to the Canadian Figure Skating Championships will be assigned in reverse order according to their ISU World Standing at the time of the draw. The highest-ranked competitor will skate last, the second highest will be the second last to skate, and so on. Byed competitors without an ISU World Standing will be assigned by random draw. These competitors will skate before those with an ISU World Standing.
Language specifying that this is for Seniors has been taken out, so I take it that this now applies to Juniors, along with start order by Challenge result for non-Byed skaters. I don't see Kaiya passing Maddie in the World Standings, so she may be the only National champion to not skate last.

Skaters who are assigned to a JGP/Junior International will receive a Conditional Bye to Challenge -
Competitors granted a Conditional Bye to Skate Canada Challenge must confirm their Bye by competing at their respective Sectional Championship. The Bye to Skate Canada Challenge will be confirmed by the competitor regardless of the result. In this case, the number of competitors advancing to the next level of competition will be determined as if the competitor did not compete. If the competitor is assigned to an international competition by Skate Canada that occurs within 14 days of their Sectional Championship their Bye will be confirmed without participation at their Sectional Event.
Senior International assignment still gets an automatic entry to Challenge. I take it this change is part of what Mike Slipchuk was talking about when he mentioned wanting to get the skaters competing more domestically.

(rules are here)

Good News for sure but not going to get my hopes up. How many come backs and then set backs has she had since winning the bronze at worlds. I remember getting excited when I saw she was 2nd after the short at SCI 2 years ago only to drop to 11th in the free.

I just hope that Gabby can have a good outing, free of injury and whenever she's ready to end her career, she will be able to say, I succeeded, then I had issues but I fought for it and I am proud of fighting for the sport I love.

Instead of, injured and not able to end her career on her own terms..

Wow when you read about his fall just before Jr Worlds it makes his result even more impressive. You also have to wonder if he didn't have all the experience from multiple events under his belt and then the fall he might have not been so prepared. Have to really wonder how well some of our other young skaters would o if they got that type of experience.
