2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

I am sorry to hear about Wesley not going to Nationals. I hope he his health gets better soon. Hopefully, we will see him at 4CC. I believe, Aleska is the most consistent skater so far. He is my choice to win the title at Nationals. I love Anthony for his artistry. I love his PCS scores! Technically, I hope to see a triple axel from Anthony at Nationals. He is just a beautiful skater. He reminds me of Jason Brown, who is also a beautiful artistic skater. As for Roman, consistency will be the key for him to win the title at Nationals. Roman has the whole package when it comes to technical with quads, triple axel and high PCS scores with his artistry.

I agree with your assessments and also think Roman has the whole package - well minus the consistency sadly. I find him both mesmerizing and maddening to watch - but I'm certainly still cheering for him! Anthony's another skater that I truly enjoy watching.

I'm still looking forward to the Men's comp - and all the comps - at Canadian Nationals though, even though they're a bit smaller than originally hoped. From the comments of posters here about ticket sales, it sounds like it will be a packed arena, which should make for an exciting atmosphere! And all these skaters work so hard and sacrifice a great deal -- they deserve their chance to shine and feel appreciated!

Will there be live streaming for Nationals?
I don’t see anything on Skate Canada’s website.
Yes, there are links to the streams in the competition threads.

The redesign for the Skate Canada site now has a dedicated page for the livestreams - https://skatecanada.ca/fans/watch/ Past competitions link to the Dailymotion playlist for that event.

Going to the French version of the page will take you to the links for the French commentary - https://skatecanada.ca/fr/partisans/diffusion-en-direct/

I think Canada is going to be very dependent on host spots for the men next year. At the moment, none of them qualify based on SB or world ranking. Hopefully whoever goes to Worlds will finish top 24 and qualify for one spot that way (I think a top 12 finish and 2 spots is probably unrealistic unless someone suddenly finds form and consistency). The same could happen in ladies. At the moment, Maddie just scrapes into the top 24 SB once you remove the juniors who will be staying junior (which is fewer than the past two seasons because those caught immediately below the age change, e.g. Jia Shin, will finally be senior eligible).
I'm confused. I thought they had to be in top 10 to give us the chance to qualify a second spot for the 2026 Olympics. Did the rule change?

Robert Brodie has started covering Nationals.

Deanna/Max:
“I was sick for three months, because I probably should have taken time off. So we made sure (Deschamps) took the time off that he needed and he came back in an intelligent manner so he could be at full strength faster,” she said. “Not only did that work, but because he was limited in what we could practise, we worked on other things and improved other elements that maybe get put on the backburner because you’ve got to do your jumps and your throws and your twists and all that.

4CC skate-off is official (and it sounds like Wesley will be in it):
“If you had multiple spots (for Worlds), you may be in a position to name one and then wait on the other. None of the men were clearly ahead of the pack this season, they were all kind of in there,” said Slipchuk. “So it’s best for us to have two events. You get to see them domestically but Four Continents is where your get a real good litmus test because it’s an international (judging) panel. It’s safe to say that, barring something unforeseen, we will wait on that decision and we have that built into our criteria.”

And Edrian Paul Celestino on competing in Laval:
“I’m 26 years old. I feel like I could still go on, but my body is telling me no due to multiple injuries, recurring injuries,” he said. “I’m actually injured right now. I have a joint that’s swollen in my second toe, so I have trouble with any jumps off that foot. When I found out nationals would be in Laval, I thought it would be a great fairytale ending do to my last competition here.”

There is normally a one-year wait required when switching countries, but that only really matters for international competitions. And that was never part of Celestino’s plan. He just wanted to compete close to home one last time.

I’m having difficulty finding the results for the event- it appears the link for 2025 Canadian National Skating Championships is not yet live. Anyone have access to it?

Have you been reading my diary? Eyes on your own paper!

Edit to Add: Anyone planning to hang on the live thread this evening?

I watched a lot of the Men's event and part of the Synchro and Pairs events, and I was going to hang out on the live thread but then fell asleep for a bit - it's been a long week.

I enjoyed some of the lower ranked skaters and loved Anthony Paradis - he threw it all out there! I also enjoyed Roman even though he wasn't perfect. What did you think of his performance? Were there skaters that you liked?

Robert Brodie articles:

Maddie, Kaiya and Sara-Maude

Roman, Aleksa, Deanna/Max and Lia:

Aleksa is getting over RSV.
