2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

With NextGen, it's also a matter of having the necessary elements for Junior that Skate Canada is looking for. If they don't have a 3Lo, they may not be selected for it.
well well... triple loops pretty much ghosted this event.

I couldn't watch all of the events on the weekend so my observations are limited. I did enjoy the top 3 Novice women, particularly Hannah Quinn. Her skating was very watchable. But I need to rewatch all of them again and see how she compares to Camila Volkova - whom I also liked. I agree - very few 3loops tried by Novice women and (except Uxia) I think all attempted were negative GOE.

Ethan Luo - I see that some thought his skating was boring but for a Novice-level man, he presented well and his jumps and spins were very secure (and he didn't have a melt down after having to wait all day to skate!).

I think this age of boys suffers from "bambi" syndrome with growth spurts. So lots of inconsistency and trouble landing / exiting jumps (thinking Rui whom I really like). So - see how they all progress. Bennet also had a pretty good free skate. BTW Ethan, Rui and Bennet landed +GOE 3loops (but not bronze medalist Alexander Ge - yet).

Yay!! The comeback of the 3Lo. At least in juniors, for next season.
I have a feeling the NextGen list is going to be based mostly on results….as the lower end of the NextGen girls don’t really have this jump. One thing I noticed from the competitions is that if an athlete has a 3Lo, they already have a 3T and 3S. Which, puts them on the NextGen list already.
The 3Lo is only an essential jump for JGP selection and I believe all our top junior skaters have this jump.

I did some checking from 2021-22 Novices to see how they did with the 3Lo and how that played into NextGen selection. I picked that one since it's the most recent and I want to keep it to the same jump.

All the Novice Women (5) selected for NextGen 2022-23 had attempted the 3Lo at Novice Nationals, with Hetty Shi having jumped it 3 times between the SP and FS with positive GOE.

With the Novice Men, there were only 5 attempts at a 3Lo at Nationals (including 1 pop into a 2Lo for David Shteyngart). Edward Vasii was the only one who had positive GOE on his attempt. Two of the Novice Men were selected for NextGen without having attempted a 3Lo there: David Li and David Bondar. Between then and NextGen, they had a 3Lo good enough to be chosen for JGP assignments.

So if they don't have the 3Lo now, they could get it in time for NextGen selection.

Wow!! Excellent research!!
Time for Canadian Skaters to master the 3Lo 😜

Ted Barton is retiring from his position as Executive Director of Skate BC/YT:

Oh, that makes me feel old! Ted was still competing for BC in senior men when I was in juvenile and pre-novice pairs. I don't think then he envisaged devoting the rest of his working life to skating administration.

Time certainly flies...
7 years ago today, the Canadian team won the team event at the Olympics. Gold medals for Patrick Chan, Virtue-Moir, Gabby Daleman, Kaetlyn Osmond and Duhamel-Radford.
The golden age of Canadian figure skating would produce one more gold in Dance and Bronzes in Pairs and Women (Osmond)

What an era !

Optimistic predictions for next year's games
Medals in pairs, dance and team event.

Average prediction
Medals in pairs and dance

Pessimistic prediction
Medal in dance.

I don't want to hear those who are predicting 0 medals next year. You are entitled of course to your opinion :)

I think there is a very good chance of medals for you in dance and the team event. Unfortunately, I am not confident about pairs - I think Deanna and Max are being overtaken by some of the newer pairs, and there will only be two medals available after the independent athletes (expected to be Mishina and Galliamov from what I saw somewhere else) take the title.

I am a bit more optimistic...in 2017 Megan and Eric had won two WC's but ended up in 7th (or 6th) at the WC then, but at the OG a small year later, they got an individual medal in the pairs.

A gold in the team event may not be achievable but a medal of another colour: certainly.

And Piper and Paul (if they continue to b so good) or Marjorie and Zachary (on the rise) could get one in Dance!

Deanna loves being underestimated!

And if those “independent athletes” win, I will be physically ill. 🤬

Hoping and wishing in pairs for olympics for a Canada gold, Japan silver, and Germany bronze!
Welcome to Golden Skate GinaHatim! As we say here, "post early and post often"!

I wouldn't mind that podium. I like all three of those teams so much that I wouldn't mind if any of them got the gold and they were on that podium in any order really. Pairs is becoming very interesting!

Dang, I was hoping that Connaught posting a good luck message for Wesley was a sign he had recovered. Hopefully it isn't anything too serious with how close he withdrew, and hopefully Matthew can have a good 4CC debut.

This may sound strange, but I am always so pleased when everybody does! I realise there sometimes just are too many skaters and the FS would become endless, but I always feel so sorry for those who don't make it. This is better! I hope all three guys have good skates at 4 CC!
