2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Roberts write-ups are always so interesting! I was surprised by Lala's result because I thought the programme was skated well, but Zachary's comments here did make some sense. Let's hope they get vehicles like last season for the season coming up!
I mentioned this in the competition thread

Zach is always harsh on himself.

Marjorie's reaction in the KnC says it all to me... They were surprised with the score and ranking.

Also, skaters cannot say anything like " well.. .we have no idea why we were dumped by the judges..."

so to me, it's not an explanation but a coping mechanism.

The reality is that they were dumped by a block of judges... all from Eastern European nations... and you can look for yourself who they favoured... I don't want to get into this debate in the Canadian skating thread.. :)

I can see why Marjorie would be surprised. I mean even if they were a little off it is strange that they dropped 5 points off their SB and 7 points off their PB - and with out a major error. When Chock and Bates have errors they hardly lose any points.

exactly.
the scoring system gives the benefit of the doubt and does reward rather than punish skaters. without major errors, it's hard to see why they were put behind team who did make obvious mistakes (Italians and Brits) in the Free Dance.

I noticed that too. 5 judges had LaLa with scores in the low 120s and while the placements were still not great (5, 6, 5, 7, 7), they were way better than the next 4 judges who gave them scores ~ 10 points lower (111, 112, 116, 111) and placements much lower (10, 10, 12, 12). Technically they did actually get better levels than Fear and Lewis but GOE and component marks were lower from the judges from a geographically similar area. So not debating, just observing. IMO this lower mark and placing was not a technical issue on LaLa's part - but certain judges' perception of how they skated the programme yesterday. And in my fan-based totally subjective opinion, I thought they were wonderful in their free dance.

There may be something to Beau Callahan practicing side by side jumps with Vladimir Furman. She posted an Instagram story of them practicing a 2Tw.

well they were practicing other things earlier for fun... but if they are doing a twist... it seems more serious... i can see people doing SBS jumps or even lifts.... but twist, to me is a deciding factor.

vladimir furman is a good choice... he's a strong guy and i think he didn't have a bright future in singles... but i can see him being a very good pairs skater

This partnership makes sense. Beau was looking for a partner. Both of them are ok singles skaters domestically. But, would never make it to any international events in the singles events. Might as well gamble to see how far they can get in Pairs.

I hope to see more singles skaters pair up in Canada 🍁 🇨🇦

Would they be eligible for junior? I know Beau is very young but i don't know how old Vladimir is
vladimir still skated as a junior... but would have run out of years of eligibility but under the new rules... trust me, he is younger than berulava

this being said... i will try to find his age

Furman was born 19 june 2007.
So he is turning 18 this june... he has plenty of years ahead of him...

I'm watching the French CBC coverage..will let you know if anything interesting coming out from the exuberant Alain Goldberg

Max and Deanna : Max, we felt nervous during the SP...
During LP : AG is very positive about the skate... of course, we know that the sequence didn't count... the other colour commentator...said that the lowered GOE on the salchow was strict (we know it wasn't a great jump) and said " competitions are not all in the USA :)
OK.. AG is rusty or not seeing things anymore... He and his colour commentator didn't see the lift dismount mistake for Miniki. He finally mentioned during slow mo... calling it an hesitation...
For the commentators, the Japanese made too many mistakes... and Goldberg mention the incredible speed and though he admires it, mentions that the speed they impose on themselves may lead to these mistakes. Of course, seeing the results they mention the lead they had from the short.

Max : our aim was to fight for everything tonight and be proud.. we did that and it's the same as gold. Deanna is emotional. I am very proud and we came to fight today and sometimes, it feels the same as winning.

I will come back later... that was the pairs coverage.. they didn't show anything else than these three teams... not even the other Canadians nor the Italians :)

Women's LP

Maddie did an interview in French after the SP. Pretty much, she's happy about the program. Her best at worlds. Her French is extremely good.
AG likes her butterfly program. He likes the arm movements. "the door was open, she had a big obstacle at the beginning but she didn't let that affect her" (paraphrasing)

Maddie : to be 11 today, it's tough but it's still my best result at worlds so i am proud... top ten was important for me but it's over now (with a hand gesture sort of saying, i cannot do anything about it anymore)

That's all for the women. They show bits of Alysa Liu and that's it.

WOW. I am unimpressed with this coverage... i guess they have 2 hours to show it all... and dance may be what they want to show in more details... but we are far from what I would call a decent broadcast when they are showing only the top Canadian and maybe one or two performances... Alysa's LP wasn't even shown in full but as background. I am stunned.

Dance

AG : there is a hierarchy in ice dance but LaLa are exceptional. A podium is not impossible.
About Fabbri/Ayer : he mentions their skills and quality.

About Chock and Bates : AG : they are a bit overscored these days . (oups !)

They run up the results of the RD.

Without any surprise the Americans have chosen the right time to get their best performance of the season. Piper and Paul are 4 points behind.

Piper : we feel at home with this program. This is such a Piper and Paul program.
LaLa : we are tired but we did so well and we are proud.
F/A : we were super well prepared. We had a few bobbles and the score reflects that but we are still happy about our performance.

They show LaLa's FD : One foot : exceptional glide. Spin, excellent rotation and beautiful position. They move extremely well. Twizzles : AG says OUI OUI OUi for each set and says Excellent. He goes on praising them for their synchronicity and their lightness and ease in their skating during the step sequence. He says they take a lot of risks and push themselves. Complexity of movement. Loves the rotational lift. Pretty much, he loves it. He says it's an exceptional performance, A flawless performance. The colour commentator is screaming. AG : they can be very proud of this performance, and adds, be patient, one day you will be first in the world. Colour commentator... Zach was saying they are tired. AG : well it can get tiring when they are not given what they deserve. After reviewing the twizzles he changes his mind twice.. at first he says that there was a small blip.. and then he says,.. no it was good. ;)

KnC moment : Both commentators cannot believe the scores... AG says not even Patrice can understand those marks.

They are showing the Italians now.
They are not saying much. At the end, he mentions that there are original things in there. He mentions that the public reception is so so. He mentions they usually skate with more joy and this was very mechanical... I guess he means that despite being robots, they still missed bringing the energy, hence the lukewarm reaction from the crowd.

Brits : he notes some positive things like depth of edges but also some mistakes like the difficult to get up on the lift. He seems to have liked it... he calls it a great moment in skating. Will they mess up the usual hierarchy ? says AG. He says, I think they are getting closer and closer to the podium. He sends shade to the judges saying that they are so trusted that they remove the highest and lowest mark and on top of that, they change the judges from the RD to the FD (well he didn't say that they only replace a couple judges) so that way, they cannot fix things among themselves .... AG is not happy that their score is low but then yells in victory when they reach first place and secure the podium.

Piper and Paul : magnificient lift, exceptional attitude (which I believe means posture) he mentions the beauty of the costumes... i guess he hasn't read the comments about Paul's back LOL. He's raving about their elegance. Also loving the one foot mirror sequence.. how difficult it is to make it look good and how original it is. Excellent edges, great amplitude. Lots of nuances. Twizzles, he screams a big yes... He encourages them saying they are wonderful and this could be a win for them. One of their best performances ever from what he has seen from them over the years. He mentions their strength and speed. An exceptional moment. He just cannot stop raving about it and quite frankly, I agree with him though he annoys me for talking non-stop over the program. He says they have succeeded to give their best performance ever. He says they are always in character. He again mentions how difficult and innovative some of their elements are. Unique moment they will remember forever, and we will too.

Maddie and Evan : Excellent lift. Languid and sensual. Twizzles : perfect. Original dance spin. She's omniprésente (pretty much he is saying that she outshines him but it's not done in a petty way). He notes that Piper and Paul did One foot mirror... very stable in the step sequence. Very dancing... which is something he didn't say about them last year where he really hammered them for not moving enough. He says that it's a great program. Two great skaters. He mentions the amazing work from IAM with them.

What a battle. Colour commentator : i hope this will be close... it's a judged sport... it shouldn't be a question of taste. AG : well, we are before the Olympic games...and we never know what the teams will bring for the Olympics so everything will have to be restarted. Teams never know if they will have good material. The Americans have a much better program than last year (I agree) and they have improved.

Scores : they get the best FD result and are world champions. Congratulations (colour commentator)
No word from AG on this :)

Interviews: Piper we were the calmest. It was so special. Paul we gave ourselves the objective to win, so of course, we are a bit disappointed but we are proud

Marjorie : i felt great. I was very connected with the music and with Zach. i will have to look to better understand the results
Zach : we fought... it's important to fight even when we are tired. the score is the score, we will go back home and resume training and that's all.

Men
they are only showing Malinin. AG gets excited for the quad axel... he is yelling quadruple axelllllll.... quaaaaaaadruple axellllll
and yells for all the quads to come :) he also says that Ilia is saving a lot of energy in his skating to be able to do the jumps...
AG "unbelievable!"
I guess i shouldn't post about this in the Canadian thread because they don't even mention anything Canadian lol... nothing at all... but in any case, it's what the French speaking commentators had to say.
Oh.. they mention Roman saying he finsihed 14th.

I can see why Marjorie would be surprised. I mean even if they were a little off it is strange that they dropped 5 points off their SB and 7 points off their PB - and with out a major error. When Chock and Bates have errors they hardly lose any points.
Scores generally increase at Worlds. I thought LaLa had their best skae of the FD of the year for them. I willl say his. Skating a home "hellps" the home team usually. first the positive energy from the crowd helps the skaters. Second i pressures the judges to score them higher. All three US teams in fac all the skaers except for maybe Andrew T who had a nightmare FS benefitted. Lets see if CP fall behind LaLa Frrrance Lihuania, Finland and maybe anotherr french team same for Green and Parsons.

I hope Gilles and Porier bring it and get the judges behind them. I know it is timeing and possibly wihtout the Russians but it seems almost "ufair" that Chock and Bates with errors in 2 years of world titles gets three world itles and most likellly OGM whereas teams like Oksanikov and Krylova; Usova and Zhulin don''t have OGM. They might appear bettter than PC or VM but I jus feel hat they have been given so much for lack of words so little. But back to LaLa I just don't understand why they scored so low.

I don't get why Chock and Bates seem to always get the advantage - even if hey deserved to wwin and i thinnnk the freedance belonged to P squared but CB always gett the benefit -- remember they won two worlds wwith flaws.

Fear and Gibson well I guess I am happy for them but I ffeel they are a bit sloppy and quite honetly i felt the judges could dump them for LaLa or the French team or even Spain or Finland but for the disaser RD.

Domestic events calendar 2025-26:

No Challenge in Winnipeg next season 😢. Or Autumn Classic? They included SCI as one of the events and that's an international event.
what ? no ACI ?

Also, i noticed that SCI is not as usual, number 2 in the GP schedule... so perhaps because of the Olympic year, things are shifted around... but we will have to see if there is a challenger held in the USA....

I guess i am going to have to see if I am going to CQE I am almost certain I am going to Nationals.
