2024 Ephesus Cup | Jan 22-28

I take it we don't have a seeded draw here, given that Alieva is the second to skate.

Unsurprisingly, she takes the lead. By 8.85 points.

It'll be interesting to see if anybody does go ahead of her, or whether she will still be leading when the segment ends in just under 4 hours time.

Skater #7, Derya TAYGAN (TUR), was getting an awful lot of support from the audience. Practically every element there were huge cheers.

And it wasn't just because she is from the local club. She was actually very good.

She goes into 2nd position, 2.86 points behind Alieva.

You should have seen the reaction of her team. They were jumping up and down and cheering and hugging and everything.

The whole arena erupted!

:cheer: WELL DONE DERYA!!! :cheer:

Alieva isn't going to lead until the end. Yekaterina BALYUBA (KAZ) has just taken the lead by 1.95 points.

Much as I love "Assassin's Tango", it's hard to beat Khatchaturian and his "Masquerade Waltz".

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" :cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

And it's the original by Nirvana, not one of those covers you hear getting used in programmes.

What a song to be doing your Warm-Up to!

We now reach the strange situation where we have the dinner break in the middle of a segment.

Back in about an hour from now.

We're back!!!

I'm afraid the first skater in the final group, Bengisu YAGLIDERE (TUR), is missing.

Well, I suppose we did well to get through 22 skaters before the first withdrawal. We had more regular withdrawals in the non-ISU part of the event.

Come to think of it, this is our first Singles withdrawal of the day. Because the only withdrawal from the Advanced Novice competitions was an Ice Dance partnership.

CaroLiza_fan

Right, the penultimate skater, Defne ULUTAS (TUR), is another withdrawal.

So, we go straight to Varvara KOROTKOVA (UZB), who is putting a spell on us before the resurfacing.

Our Junior Singles SP double-bill, and Day 3, finishes with chaos! 7 boys, arranged into a group of 3; followed by a group of 4.

Livestream for Junior Men's SP is now on air.

The first two skaters in this second group, who coincidentally have the same first name, each went into what was then last position.

But they were followed by the only international Men's skater at the whole event, Lukas VACLAVIK (SVK), who wasn't quite "The Godfather", as he went into 2nd position.

And then they muted the stream just before the last skater came on!

Maybe it's just as well. I just looked up the ISU Bio for Efe Ergin DINCER (TUR), and he's skating to a 2WEI cover of a song that I didn't like the original version of.

Oh, hang on. That was last season's music.

He goes into 4th position.

And believe it or not, that is today's competitive action finished. The rest of today will be practices for tomorrow.

Now for dinner, because it's already over an hour after I usually have it.

Day 4 consists of an Advanced Novice triple-bill; followed by a Junior double-bill. The Advanced Novice triple-bill consists of a combined competition of 9 girls and 2 boys; followed by a resurfacing; followed by 3 Ice Dance partnerships.

And it begins with a combined competition for the Singles skaters. A group of 5 girls; followed by a group containing 4 girls and 2 boys.

I forgot to point out that the only two international skaters at Advanced Novice level, both of whom are girls from Kazakhstan, were going back-to-back at the end of Group 1.

The first, Irina PAVLENKO, was doing a "James Bond" programme. And she looked very dapper in her black suit and tie. Albeit with her collar un-done.

She didn't have anybody sitting with her for getting her results, presumable because the coaches were with her younger team-mate. But she did have a massive Kazakh flag!

She went into a quite substantial lead of 8.76 points in the FS, and 16.34 points overall.

The second, Aiym TEMIRKHAN, was skating to my friend Elektra's favourite song, "Grande Amore" by Il Volo. She was wearing a lovely black dress, with black stockings. To be honest, I think she went overboard on the black because, with the lighting in the arena, she looked like a shadow moving across the ice.

Whereas Irina was clean, Aiym had a fall.

Aiym had a coach and the flag with her. I was kinda hoping Irina would be there too, but she wasn't. Maybe with them being so close after the SP, it would have been awkward.

She looked very disappointed waiting for her scores. And even more so after they were announced,

She goes into 3rd position in the FS and 2nd position overall.

The first skater in Group 2, local girl Elif UĞURAL (TUR), was in a tight group with the Kazakh girls after the SP. So, this battle is not over quite yet.

This is annoying me. I don't know the song that Elif UĞURAL (TUR) is skating to, but I recognise the voices. But I just can't place who they are! And it is really annoying me! :bang: :bang: :bang:

To be honest, she looked like she was just going through the motions. There didn't seem to be any enthusiasm, even though it was a real feel-good type of song that she was skating to.

She goes into 2nd in both the FS and overall. And she is a good bit behind leader Irina PAVLENKO (KAZ) in both.

Urgh, "Tango De Roxanne" next. :rolleye:

"Winter" has come!

Local girl Deniz TARIM (TUR) skated to Vivaldi and, like yesterday, demolished the field. She won the FS by 9.02 points over Irina PAVLENKO (KAZ), and overall by 18.48 points over Leyla ÇETIN (TUR, but not from Izmir).

Boys now!

There's not going to be long for me to eat my toast during the competition between that resurfacing and the next, because we now complete our Advanced Novice triple-bill with a very short competition for 2 Ice Dance partnerships.

Livestream for Advanced Novice Free Dance is now on air.

Oops! They starting playing the Short Dance music for the Estonian partnership instead of the Free Dance music.

I know I enjoyed the Tina Turner programme yesterday, but it's somebody else's turn to sing today.

CaroLiza_fan

I just remembered something I read a few months ago, but which didn't twig with me when I saw them yesterday.

The girl in the Bulgarian partnership, Silvia LUTAY / Gleb RIASKIN, is the daughter of Bulgarian Ice Dancer Ina Demireva and Russian Men's skater Andrei Lutai.

She is also Albena Denkova's niece.

Talk about skating pedigree!

CaroLiza_fan

I haven't seen him recently, but I'm pretty sure that the guy wearing the baseball cap was Andrei.

The other guy looked like a gangster!

Looking at Silvia, you would know she was Andrei's daughter. She is very like him.

They win both the FD and overall.

Now that the Advanced Novices are finished, it is time to complete the Junior competitions. And we start with the longest competition fo the day. 26 girls, arranged into three groups of 5; followed by a resurfacing and dinner break; followed by a group of 5; followed by a group of 6.

Livestream for Junior Ladies FS is now on air.
