2024 Skate America Pairs SP

Wow, I loved Riku/Ryuichi's skate! Everything about it! I love the sass this music brings out in Riku! I've loved this team since I first saw them in 2019, and it's so good to see them back to form,, see them rise to what we know they can do. šŸ˜

catching up with CBC archives.
first group
m/p not my cup of tea. they will need to do something really special to break out among the many good american teams
e/m : i like them. very elegant. good flamenco.
finns : so powerful, i think they have improved. they are a bit rough though
m/b : sigh... that program is just as cringe as their gala program from worlds where she played the role of .. a stripper.... i think the elements are great but not as great as the panel seems to believe they are, especially on the 3flip throw where she almost two footed yet got very high GOE.. didn't like the last two elements at all, the back outside death spiral, though creative, looked very awkward and the spins were coming dangerously closer to one another at one point... in any case, I understand why they would lead the first group and I don't disagree with that lead either but for some reason, I cannot get behind them at all.

second group
Brits : love them. gosh, i remember them being so much weaker... but this was good. easier elements but so well done. loved her position on her death spiral, even the lift with the leonova-kwalko position which i hate, looked good. great spins, great steps..... FABULOUS costume. great music (i do like Patrick Watson, kill me)
K/O... any team skating to rain in your black eyes is meh for me. especially after sui/han. Very nice salchows... that was the highlight for me. They were so good on that element which is not their forte. The throw, they surely will take it : a hand down is so much better than the throws attempts they had last year. the spin was a big issue for me : they traveled so far apart that the camera had a hard time keeping them both in the screen... yet, they scored a positive goe : MEH. :) high quality elements, but in general, i find him too exuberant and rough while she is delicate and elegant.. so to me, it's clashing... sometimes, i feel like he is dragging her instead of skating with her. great lift. happy they beat the georgians though at this point in the competition.
Hungarians : well. for them, i guess cringe is okay because it's better than the usual bland they have given us.. so i was happy seeing them trying something new. some good elements but not as clean as they have given us in the past. the death spiral was not good at all, her position, not low enough. Their spins got wonky. but still, a strong team . i liked how their throw landed right with the "kiss" of the music.
R/R were definitely the best tonight. I like their paint in black program but then, it gave me vibe of oxygen from DSD last year. very strong and dynamic, lots of energy, which is not something they usually give us. In any case, my favourite element of the night was their throw.

I say it here : they will be hard to beat in the SP this year... from the other SPs I have seen so far, I don't think DSD and Miniki can reach them. The elements are too strong and well placed in this SP to be challenged if they skate it clean.

After having a snap I am now watching pairs same time as having morning coffee. I know the results but it still fun to watch. I checked what to watch and noticed: all. Wow, if this continues like this at worlds will be needed 60+ to make it to the free.

Last time Finland had a pair at this level was a siblings pair at 80's. I checked, their best results was EC 12. and worlds 17. Alisa could represent Finland also, she has the citizenship as she is born here and lived her first years here too. Seems she is doing fine at USA but that is an option. Some of you know but maybe there are many who don't Marina Shirsova, the coach of Iida Karhunen and many others is her mother.

Miura/Kihara were easily the class of the field here. I LOVE this program for them. The energy throughout is phenomenal and the music tempo matches their exuberance. Wow!

Kam/O'Shea were pretty good and I agree with the second place finish. They were overscored on the side by side spins, though. They were fast, but never in synch and very far apart. Whereas Vaipan-Law/Digby who went immediately before them, and thus making it even more striking, were even more noticeably underscored for their excellent side by side spins (they and Miura/Kihara had the best ones of the competition).

Pavlova/Sviatchenko's lift was scary. It's unclear to me why Metelkina/Berulava look like they're going to star in a 1980s aerobics videotape. It's incredibly distracting. The program itself could not be more boring, and this team has zero chemistry. Neither do the Hungarians.

Thank you for sharing this fact.. The flamenco program is very well done.

They ended up with negative GOE on the spin

You are correct, and they were still overscored. They got only a negative 0.05, which is barely negative at all. And my main point was that when you compare that with Viapan-Law/Digby's marginally positive GOE for some of the best side by sides in the competition there's a clear discrepancy, which I would guess is most reputation based.

I've never been much of a fan of the Japanese team - too much of a Meghan mini-me and some very forgettable music, but I really enjoyed this. Well done Shae-Lyn! I've even watched it again and its just as impressive - so much attack and wonderful choreography.

Sticking up for Ellie and Danny.

They have no reputation. I agree with one of the earlier OPs that Danny O"Shea is one of the smoothest and most impressive pairs dudes out there. However, Danny is 33 and had retired for a few years before returning. Ellie, even to dedicated US fans, was an unknown when she teamed with Danny. They have been skating together all of two years.

Their lifts transitions and steps, as far as I am concerned, were the class of the field. Even better than Riku and Ryuichi, who I totally admit were the best team out there overall. And who I am thrilled are skating to something other than slow slow slow.

They have work to do on unison of elements for sure. But IMO they weren't gifted anything and should be in second right now.

(And I am beyond impressed at the improvement with the Brits)

I'm also really impressed with the improvement with Ana and Luke (Brits) - I really like this team, and think they have potential to do really well - they seem to have a really solid foundation with their skating and their skating partnership. I really like both their programmes this season, too. Mark Hanretty and Christopher Dean choreographed their free and it's beautiful.

And I agree that Danny is one of the most impressive pairs dudes, and what he and Ellie have achieved in such a short space of time is amazing!

I loved them from the beginning. Happy happy joy joy

Yes, I know you have been a fan. But was Ellie *known* to all but the most dedicated? No. Certainly she was not as well known as Danny. That's like saying Deanna was known as a pairs lady from the first moment she skated with Nate Bartholomay.

I loved Deanna and Nate from the very start, when they skated to Eleanor Rigby in the summer of 2017 (and quickly ditched it ;( ). But even I can't say, at that point, they were "known".

Same with Ellie and Danny. :)

No, he didn't? Danny and Ellie have competed together since 2022-23. Danny skated with Chelsea Liu in 2021-22. And Danny's last competition with Tarah was 2020 Skate America. He didn't miss a single season.

I meant to circle back to this. I remember him not missing a season because every season I had stress with him not having a partner.
