2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

I mean people just mentioned the obvious....Lia and Kieran... they both train in the same region and it is clearly Jasmine that is struggling with the jumps.

Not that I don't love her and think she is a star, but she can barely land a 2A.

Plus both at 2004 babies, all that say I wouldn't be shocked.
Can Kieran land triple jumps ?

OMG!! I stop following for two days and there is so much to catch up on.

@saine thanks for the world updates. I’m sad Max and Deanna won’t be at Worlds. I wanted redemption. Kelly Ann and Loucas I’m happy for and kind of earned this spot as I felt that was the only podium spot at Nationals that the judges got wrong. This team deserved silver at Nationals instead of bronze.

Dance. Wow!! P&P. This means I’m confident we will keep our three spots now in Dance before they retire to the sunset. I’m hoping we just maintain the two spots for Pairs. This will be tricky now. GoGo for top ten. Maddie… let’s just hope she gets close to top 12.

I’m happy to see Fiona back on ice.

Also, I wonder what Lia will do. As some posters mentioned, Kiernan makes sense. But, is his ability that high? It is unknown. Also, I think he is loyal to Jazmine. But, with Jazmine, he will struggle in Seniors. Other prospects could be my boy David S or dare I say it Balasz Nagy ( 🇭🇺 ) with him becoming Canadian 😜

It's pretty hard for Canada to lose the two spots in pairs. If both pairs make the free, and I think they will, it's more or less done with a team in the top 12. I doubt Lia and Trennt wouldn't get top 12. If one team doesn't get to the free, the other team needs a top 10. Again, should be okay. Deanna and Max won't be there but I suspect that some other teams in the elite won't be there, G/A, S/H as well. There will be one more American team though. In any case, I am pretty sure that we will retain the two spots.

Balasz is American now, you, home wrecker :). HAHA. Your boy David S is not at the level as a pairs skater that would work out fine with Lia. They would take many years to gel and that would not work out for 2030. Look, Deanna and Max, both experienced pairs partners teamed up in 2019. Of course,Covid slowed things down a bit but they only started to gel in 2022 or about there... It takes a couple years usually for a new team, even more when one of the partners is less experienced. David S needs to learn so many moves he doesn't know : twist, lifts, throws, death spirals, for his secure and safe hold of the move are essential. So, I would rather see him pair with a younger girl, and skate juniors where he can learn the easier, simpler versions first than a reverse lasso lift level 4.

Youth sports are also increasingly becoming more and more out of reach for anyone who's parents don't have disposable income. We aren't seeing the best make it to the higher levels, we are seeing those who can afford the extra practice/equipment. Even youth hockey is in big trouble since the kids getting on the elite teams are 50% talent and 50% wealth.
not just in sports... in many other fields as well... Everything has become more and more about money. Also, the culture has changed too in terms of what parents want for their kids in the sense that a couple decades ago, most kids had one or two activities... the children I teach now often have 4 or 5 activities per week. Not only do they take longer to develop at any of these activities but when they do show promise, it's hard for me (or their coach at any sport) to convince the parents of a need for increase focus and dedication. It has to come from the kid and at 11 or 12... or even younger, it's hard for a kid to decide that they should only do one thing and be great at that one thing.

So what happens in my field : more and more late bloomers... which doesn't win competitions or secure jobs later on. The level is also lower for entry at post-secondary schools. In the end, it doesn't reflect reality because there are still some kids who did do that one activity with focus and will grab the spotlight.

So in any case, it's very difficult to train new generations of talent... and it's not getting any easier. Money but also time is getting difficult to find.

It's only too bad though, that the athletes who do dedicate their lives to sport and reach Olympic level are not supported enough to get from 10th place to the podium. Canada needs to do better. The bobsleigh documentary series I posted is very alarming. Figure skating was always a very expensive sport to start with, so talent is even filtered out before kids even try it. So I took swimming.... a speedo is much cheaper than a pair of skates and ice time... but then, when I got to a higher level, the club fees were much much higher and it was too much for my family. And that was many years ago. So I cannot imagine now, with the inflation, the interest rates (for families with mortgages) and so on, and on top of that, the diversity offered with all the other activities... how kids can pick and choose one sport and have the support to evolve in it unless they are hyper-wealthy or have parents who were part of the sport. Programmes like sports-études are often linked to private schools too... A friend of mine has a daughter who took up swimming (my suggestion to them) and then, when she became good, her option was to do high school in sport-études.. but it was with a private school at 10K per year. She is no longer swimming and is going to the neighbourhood public school.

For Dominick Gauthier (former Olympian in moguls) and involved with B210, the reason is MONEY

PS I don't always agree with everything he says (some controversial stances in the past) ... but he knows his stuff when it comes to financing athletes.

The bobsled documentary horrified me when they talked about the maintenance budget being so low and then seeing all the crashes. They really have to love the sport, there is no way I would do what they do for the amount of money they are funded.

Hope this is the right place to post:

Toronto Spring Festival (Lulu Lin)

Odyssée M.A.D Festival in Montréal is starting on Thursday 26th Feb. There are several recognisable names taking part!

Antoine !!!! I missed him this year at Nationals. Such a beautiful skater

I do prefer Charlie/Cayden over Summer/Nic (only slightly) but CC did themselves no favours with the free skate mess-up and not great levels in the dance steps in the rhythm dance, and SN seem to be more solid that way. Hoping that SN can convince the international judges as well. Life is never 100% fair. Yes, we need three positions.
Addressing this part of your comment:

Did anyone happen to see the outcome of the Bavarian open? See the link below for summer& nick‘a FD. International judges scored them 130.xx overall. So, even if u pretend that their double fall in the free dance didn’t happen and …..say give them an extra 15 pts their total score still only adds up to 145. International judging is not the same as domestic judging. Skate Canada is biased & chooses their favourites, outcomes are predetermined and true competition is lost. Yes 3 jr spots at worlds would’ve been ideal…but for next year we’ll might be lucky to maintain 2

I just want to address this part of your comment.
To maintain two spots, both team need only to make the free dance with one of them making top 12. Or if one team doesn't make the free, the other team should make top 10. I have my doubts about losing the two spots considering Veillon and Brandys should be top 6

Thank you for this information. That is a huge relief.

Skate Ontario has an interview with Reese Rose:
“The last two weeks, I’ve been focusing a lot on the triple axel, actually,” she said. “That is a work in progress right now, but I still have to make sure that I don’t get injured or anything. So we’re taking it slow, but also, you know, finding time each day to work on it. So that’s super exciting, and hopefully that will come for the next season.”
