2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Angela Derochie also attempted one at Cup of Russia back in 1998. Barb said it was rotated but wasn't landed. Also Lisa Sargeant attempted them and even internationally. Seem to remember a commentator, maybe Barb, saying once that Josee was also working on 3As.

I think Elizaveta and Amber have proven that the 3A can be mastered and kept as a senior lady figure skater.

I do enjoy reading that our females are pushing themselves technically by trying to learn the 3A.

However, I think most of our ladies need to also focus on the other triples too 😳

Pretty sure Josée could do them in practice
Apparently according to one article I read she actually landed one in a Pro event.
'Sargeant-Driscoll wasn’t alone in her quest of the triple Axel. Josee Chouinard was doing them in 1992, and then, not again. Remarkably, at the age of 30 as a pro skater, Chouinard brought back the triple Axel very carefully. She went to Doug Leigh for help. It took her a year. Two weeks before the Sears Open Championships in Hamilton, Ont., she landed her first one. And then she used it to win the event, defeating Michelle Kwan.'
So it seems CAN ladies have been trying the 3A for some time now. Think back in the days of Lisa, Josee and Angela they knew they needed an edge to surpass some of the other ladies from fav countries. I remember one year at worlds when both Josee and Karen had clean shorts and yet were placed behind the USA ladies who had errors. Barb was commenting and she was quite put out by it.

I'm curious about this... Never heard about this before

Here is the full article by Bev Smith:

I recall that Josee Landed It in the practices at the Professional Event, and apparently it was huge, which is not surprising given that all of her jumps had tons of amplitude. However, I'm almost certain that she didn't land it in the competition - I believe she either popped or doubled it, so the triple axle wasn't the reason she beat michelle.

In addition, I heard heard about Lisa Sargent's triple axel and spent a ton of time searching for evidence online but was unable to find any videos.

Alaine Chartrand also spent a season attempting it, and I recall at least a couple efforts, but they were nowhere near close. Same with Angela - I don't think hers was rotated fully. I can picture in my mind the competition she attempted it at, though I don't recall seeing it in slow mo. However, although I wouldn't bet the farm on it, I am pretty sure it would have been under or downgraded today.

The one I'm disappointed I didn't see was Jose's though because I bet it would have been huge. Also, Lisa Sargent had a lot of pop in her jumps, and back in her days the ladies had typically much better technique on their double axles, so I wouldn't be surprised if it had a lot of spring to it.

Which reminds me - I know that Elizabeth Manley could land them as well. I may even have seen a video, though I can't be sure. Liz Manley's double axle was similar to Tiffany chins, with a ton of thrust, great arm action, and a big step up, similar to Brian orser's, and you can find videos of Tiffany Chin's beautiful double axles. So I don't doubt that Liz would have had a great one as well.

So there you go - 40 years ago you had a Canadian woman Landing a triple axle!

(Psst - maybe drop a hint to the notorious spellchecker since this is a forum of skating fans and skaters - it's axel. Named after the man who invented the jump, Axel Paulsen. You did manage to slip it past the gremlin once when it wasn't looking ;))

Sur but landing it in competition = one person so far : Sara-Maude Dupuis.

And yes, the one I would have liked to see is Josée's. What a jumper !

Nah, it was speech to text and I didn't have time to go back and spell check. I did go back and correct one of them, but couldn't be bothered with the whole thing :-) I actually don't know how to change my spell checker / speech to text. It would be great though, because it spells my own name, as well as a couple of my kids, incorrectly every time LOL.

I saw a podcast with Rippon and Wagner and they both thought Piper and Paul's free dance was the best of the night. Also think at least one of them said it would be the one they remember.
Well they are indeed right. Piper and Paul were the best. Then, there was magic in the Italians' dance too. I liked FBC when watching it but I already don't remember any of it. Beautiful and lyrical but one more and mo highlights.

it's a chill Sunday for me. I rewatched Piper and Paul's free dance. I cried. I think this is the moment of the Olympics 2026 that I will revisit from time to time to time forever.
Agree it was perfect and I sort of wish they would not dance it again at Worlds in case it doesn't come across with that same magical moment as it did at the Olympics. Instead bring back one of their old programs like Wuthering Heights to Worlds.
