Wow absolutely insane. If Steven had skated his short program from the team event in the men's event, he would have comfortably been on the podium. That's crazy of course it's all hypothetical, because if many of the other top contenders had skated their programs from the team event they would have finished way ahead
I thought the judging was pretty much bang on to be honest- I didn't find that the Italian men were grossly over favored or anything, and if anything I thought Steven was a little bit over mark, because he certainly doesn't sell his program as much as others do - although he has definitely improved Leaps and Bounds throughout this competition alone.
But good for him. I'm really sad for Ilia, because although he has never be my favorite, you cannot deny that he has being the most dominant, as well as innovative skater of the last few years, and I think you really did deserve this, particularly given the fact that others didn't rise to the occasion. But man, it is almost impossible to believe that things turned out the way that they did. And probably the saddest thing about all of this is that not so much the Kazakhstan skater won, but that his program is the one that received an Olympic gold medal.
At least he earned it, that's for sure, due to being one of only a couple of skaters to really go for it, but I feel like it is oxymoronic to mention his program in the same breath as Olympic gold medal...
This was without question the shock and upset of the Olympics I do not think it will be topped.
