2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

😢 Having freelanced part-time as a manuscript editor during my years as a librarian, I can tell you that newspaper copy editors are no more. The publishing world is shrinking in number and types of employees. Supposedly the author's spellchecking etc does that work, but it doesn't. For something book-length, the author is supposed to hire and pay the few remaining freelancers (who will see the errors the author doesn't because the author sees the words that are supposed to be there, not what's actually on the screen). But writers don't want to share the money, and for a daily blog there isn't time for hiring out. AI hasn't got there yet, as evidenced by the number of hilarious mistakes in the captions for videos and films where the program has misheard what the speaker actually said. There's a new freelance occupation called data annotation that is supposed to be teaching AI how to edit, but the field is so far all new and experimental. In the meanwhile, literate readers just have to roll their eyes a lot. 🧐 :rolleye:
well... this is a 5 minute read. Many errors... some of which may not be caught by AI or antidote or anything like that... but would have been caught by the author simply proof-reading her own article :)
Most of it is very basic stuff ;)

To me it sort of makes it look like she had to deliver 4 articles in a rush before worlds and they were written hastily without much care. It's unfortunate that I left with that impression because the Gogo one is actually a good read.

That's how I read it too. It's a common problem now that copy editors are no more. I cringe to think of the number of times I've written something in a hurry, proofread it once, maybe read it again several times later after it appeared in public, and finally on about the sixth read saw a completely wrong word that spellchecker allowed through because it was, well, spelled correctly.

It took me twenty years to notice that in a paper I wrote in university about medieval economics, a sentence that was supposed to read "Money problems plagued the courtiers who..." actually said, in my own typing, "Mother problems plagued...." I'll never know why. My mother and I got along very well indeed, so it wasn't something subliminal. :wonder::palmf:

Any predictions for Worlds??
I’m really hoping we can add two spots for our Men.

Women
I hope Maddie can redeem herself here. I believe she will skate in the second last group for the SP. I hope she skates clean and scores 190+ for a low teens placement.

Men
I hope GoGo proves his consistency. I just want him to place in the top ten please 🙏

Pairs
This is the discipline I’m most excited for. We actually have an outside chance for three spots if Lia &Trentt can place 5th. However, my expectation is one top ten place finish with Kelly Ann & Loucas placing close to top ten

Dance
P&P should place second here right?
The French are too far ahead. But, they are clearly the second best team. I hope LaLa places top 8 to secure three spots

I hope our Canadians end the season strongly.

well Lala only need to place 11 if Piper and Paul finish in 2nd... of course, let's hope they do indeed place as high as possible :)

Go Go Go go GogOGog GOGogo gogoG O :)

I think Piper and Paul's decision to go with Wuthering Heights is tactically smart. If memory serves me correctly, it is the one free dance that beat Chock and Bates two years ago. So "in theory" it could stand a chance to beat the French team as judges will longer be comparing the same apples to apples that got played out at the Olympics. Plus it leaves the wonderful Olympic memory of Vincent intact.

Are they really doing Wuthering Heights? Amazing! This is my favourite program of theirs. Just hope they can knock it into top shape by Worlds.

Really hoping LaLa can rise through the ranks a bit to end the season. Very disappointing Olympics for them.

I hope Gogo can replicate his Olympics skates. The judges should be watching much more favourably after his exemplary Olympics performance and be ready to give him much more the benefit of the doubt. Top 10 should be well within his grasp.

Maddie psyched herself out once again at the Olympics. She's her own worst enemy, and at this point I don't know that it's something she'll ever fix. Nevertheless, I'm hoping for a redemption competition here.

Hope Lia and Trennt can finally put together a good LP to go with their great SP. And I love Laurin/Ethier's LP this season and hope they can do it clean.

What an amazing decision!!
Wuthering Heights is my favourite program they have done.

They were never going to repeat the magic of the Olympics. So, I’m excited they will end their season with this program. I usually complain about the bad decisions made by some of our skaters. So, I have to give flowers when good decisions are made and this is one of them 👍

I think my point is going to be simpler... I was writing a long post and decided to reframe

The discussion shouldn't be about who is better and who may place ahead or not. Some will do well and place ahead because they are better, and some of the better men may do badly, as it always happens in men competitions. Stephen is above average in TES and is now right in the middle of the pack in PCS. If he does skate the same way he did at the Olympics, it should be enough for top ten, because statistically, that's how it goes. It doesn't really matter if Cha or Brown or anyone have much better skating skills. If they do not jump well, they won't win either.

At this point, what matters is not even our perception of other skaters but the scoring the judges are willing to give Stephen. His PCS scores have improved every performance he did at the Olympics. Judges are giving him credit for consistency and warming up to his very well built programs. He is not expressive. OK. That's a fair comment. Only a handful of skaters are :) and one of them will probably not make the LP.

Let's not be too critical here. Stephen needs to skate well. That's the only thing he can control. Others ? May fall may land quads and quints :) Judges, may like or dislike him.

But the point is simple : with what he brings to the ice, at this precise moment is top ten worthy.

Sure, it may not happen for a whole lot of reasons. We have seen stars not making the LP in the past. But why not just acknowledge that Canada has a real chance of top ten finish this year, which hasn't been the case since Messing retired. We can cry in a couple weeks if this doesn't happen but on paper, it should happen.

I mean, we have to consider the simple fact that this season has been all over the place and what is the most important is what Stephen has shown, consistency.
And now, Cha and Brown have pulled out. As usual, anything can happen. Right, Gogo's consistency has been superb this season!

Agree. Where did PiPa say they were performing Wuthering Hts? In one of the print articles?

Really feel sorry for LaLa. A few years ago it looked like they would be fighting for medals by now but in stead they are fighting to get into the top 5. Really have a feeling that the USA team will be in at least 3rd here. They seem to be the new favs. And it has been years since the USA did not have a dance team in the medals. In fact a couple times they even had to teams on the podium.

talking of Maddie, She did well. It could have been better of course but she managed and controlled the skate. She is in 15th entering the LP. I don't think 10th place is possible with the gap in the scores BUT that may be better for her. She can focus on just skating for herself and enjoy the process. No need to think about results or placements but just pride and achievement.

I feel like the Brits will still get bronze, but I honestly wouldn't have a problem with the second American team being on the podium. They grabbed my attention the first time I saw them and I love how quick and crisp they are. Zack and Marjorie did themselves no favors this year with their Rhythm dance. It was one of my least favorites of any of the Rhythm dances from anyone this year - and that is saying something!

I miss Canada of yesteryear. It has been rough for them over the last two olympic cycles. Gogo is a light and if he can show the olympics were not a fluke that would be amazing. Even better if he stole a bronze medal but I think Canada would be happy with top ten. With Deanna and Max injured or whatever (hoping they come back) and relying on the old guard in Piper and Paul to win some kind of medal (fingers crossed for gold but highly unlikely as the judes seem to have already decided they are the team. I think the other light of hope might be LaLa but they like Trennt and Lia have shown glimmers of hope and have not really taken the opportunity. After th 2022 worlds Lia and Trennt and then Lala were like the next great thing. Some thought LaLa would pass Psquared but that has not happened. At best Canada has a silver in Piper and Paul (they are taking a huge risk and changed their Free Dance to Wuthering Heights - I hope they have enough time to perfect it) and extreme outside chances with Gogo and Lia and Trennt - in part because the pairs is really weak. I do think that had the Russians been allowed to compete I am not sure even the Japanese would be at the same level as they have "struggled" when it was thought they would dominate with russia banned but they did win a couple of world titles but they also came second twice when really the field was not as deep as in the past. We have a lot of very good teams Georgia, Hungary, German besides Japan and add in Canada and the US but these are not stellar teams. Maybe in time. Anyways three medal chances for Canada. Last but not least the ladies. Maddie does her best but she has been given so many opportunities her best chance for top ten was last year when she sat in 6th afther the SP. and still couldn't get the job done. I appreciate Gabby wouldn't probably do it either but she sits in 15th already about 7 pts out of top ten - unless she skates her very best and some falter there is litttle hope of a top 10 finish again.

Yeah... but this was really a huge opportunity for a top 10 - she's never going to get a better opportunity, so it's unfortunate that the skate was a bit ragged and just not what she needed. Level two step sequence was a bummer. Besides the the leaders, the marks throughout the top 10 were not particularly high - definitely scores that Maddie could have attained if she'd had her best skates, so it's just unfortunate that the stars didn't align. All the best to her in the free skate.

It wasn't a bad skate. But all so perfunctory. So many solid ladies. The top two Japanese l adies were wonderful Kaori and Mone. It is a battle between those two. The triple axel ladies Amber and Ami still can shoot for a medal. Amber is in a great place. Good for Levito. But Madi is quite a bit behind the top ten.

What an unexpected post - I'm not sure if I've ever seen a post from you that just roasts the Canadian skating program and points out how bad they are compared to the past.

Oh wait ... I forgot, that's actually the only type of post I've ever seen from you!

I share your feelings of disappointment that Maddie isn't likely to get a top 10 placement, but when we say she's been given so many chances, it makes it sound like there were all these other skaters that could do better that we passed over in order to give Maddie undeserved opportunities.

The fact is, she has beaten them all many times, and there are a thousand 'what-if' scenarios. But she earned the spot, and she has what she has. Women's skating is incredibly deep, which is great for viewers, but of course makes it very challenging in terms of success - if you're measuring it by medal count or top 10 finishes.
