2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

I have to hand it to Gogolev. I can't remember the last time a skater consistently exceeded my expectations. My hope was for a top 10, but he's done so much better than that, both here and at the Olympics. What a great season for him. Surely now he will be considered by the judges as a contender at every event. As we all know, that's important for maxing out your scoring.

But it's not just placements. His short program in particular is now really good. The choreography is really clever to bring him out of his shell and you could see him getting more and more swagger and performance quality into it as the season went and his comfort level went up. He does have PCS potential.

And of course his fight and consistency is what Canadian men have lacked in the recent past. What a breakout season for him.

I wonder if Stephen will be invited to the gala.
Don't they always use the top five anyway? I rarely if ever watch the gala, but the times in the past that we skated in one, that was the rule then. The top five, the top local skater(s) from the host city/country, and then a few other crowd-pleasers. But that was a long time ago.

It’s medalist and then at the discretion of the organizing committee.

So there is only one additional men’s spot. Which I could see Adam, Kevin or even Deniss getting

I think it's only the top 3 who are guaranteed. Sometimes you'll have someone who is 8th or 10th, and not the one who is 4th or 5th.

Farewell, Piper and Paul. Thanks for everything.

They pulled off their gamble of switching free programs (if they thought they were really in a contest for gold, I imagine they wouldn't have done that, but since they weren't, less of a problem).

Okay... well we still have synchro worlds coming up... but then, it will be time for a new thread which I will start when the new season's first competition which I believe will be around Victoria Day in BC :) So the break is rather short :)

These worlds were rather successful .

Silver for Piper and Paul
Bronze for Lia and Trennt

and a wonderful 4th place for Stephen Gogolev.

Spots for next year's worlds

3 for Dance
2 for Men and Pairs
1 for Women.

In all, we picked up one extra spot. Slowly but surely. I was devastated when we lost the second man spot so I am glad it's back already.

Next year will be so interesting : who will still be competing is a big question mark.... but also, in singles, I feel the renewal is incoming.

At this point I am hoping Piper and Paul do decide to quite. It really looks like the USA team is being set up as world champs for next year. They were very close to beating the CANs in the free dance. Hate to see they go on hoping for a world title only to have it taken away.

well... with Vincent, Piper and Paul scored about triple axel higher :) so they would have been way ahead. They didn't look as good as they can be with WH... normal with the little training they had. The other two teams on the podium looked better than at the games. Just different trajectory. I am fine with how this turned out.

Was going to post this in the Dance thread but it probably won't be received well by some, but I find it interesting that with an American Controller all 3 USA teams got 6 level 4s while most of the other top teams, including Piper and Paul only got 4 level 4s.
Interesting 🤨. I haven’t watched any dance yet but were emila and vadym podium worthy over tim and Olivia and some others? Their tradjectory has been incredible.

Had a feeling that the USA teams would finish ahead of LaLa when I saw the panel, and so far one has surpassed them. Will not be surprised if G/P do too. So they will be down around 9 or 10th. Now worried for Piper and Paul. Can see the Brits and the top USA team going 2nd and 3rd with Piper and Paul in fourth.
You got that mostly right!

Piper and Paul are daredevils for sure.

We could see they were tentative at times but they made it work. PHEW.

Congratulations to them. I don't want to thank them just yet. For some reason, I am thinking they could easily do one more season :)
Yeah, that skate was... messy. I thought their scores were very fair considering what they put on the ice and at least one very noticeable error. Definitely listen to home run, but they still got silver, and it allows them to retain their Vincent moment from the Olympics.

I am still amazed at how well Canadian skaters did all year from Juniors (even Novices : go Lia! ) to Olympics.

I will never forget how much I cried with Piper and Paul at the Olympics. This was truly amazing and a rare highlight in the long career of a skating fan :)
