2025-26 Coaching, Country and Discipline Changes

They have learned from Mervin Tran... if they aim to one day go to the Olympics, there is no way it can be for Japan
Wasn't there a case of a Japanese woman and Canadian man skating for Canada where she balked at getting Canadian citizenship? Japan doesn't recognize dual citizenship (except in cases like the Reeds, who were born with dual citizenship).

Do you mean these two ?

Those who've been following the Japanese Ice Dance & Pairs thread might have anticipated this~ and now it's confirmed

Rika Kihira is switching to ice dance!
Well, the word she used is "attempt" or "try" - but she doesn't mention about continuing on singles... Whichever path she decides to pursue now, I hope it works well for her! I'm so excited to see her & Shingo perform 😍

Auto-translation:
This time, Shingo Nishiyama and I have decided to form an ice dance couple.
I try ice dancing.
I am grateful to my family, affiliations, and sponsors who pushed me through this challenge, and to Shinya Nishiyama for giving me another opportunity in my skating career.
I will continue to work hard on my dreams.

I am a bit conflicted. I like both of them as skaters and always wondered why Shingo's partnerships never seemed to last more than a couple of years. But Rika is insanely talented and maybe she will be like Daisuke Takahashi and thrive in ice dance. I wish them all the best.

There isn’t really ambiguity here - it got added in the machine translation. 挑戦します is more like the English ‘I will do my best’. With how she framed it, in the original it sounds like a done deal.

Thanks for the clarification!

Though I want to add for everyone here, that Rika does plan to continue doing singles as well (at least for the time being, I guess) 🙂

I have been trying to find his new team but no luck.
Yeah, I'm really curious but don't even have really good guesses at this point. Would he go back to Alexei Urmanov? Go to someone more technical like Rafael Arutyunyan? Stay in Europe with someone like Benoit Richaud?
