2025-26 U.S. Ice Dance

I heard that the Shibs have replaced their RD, which is a shame because I liked their RD but I understand it wasn't getting them the scores they were looking for.

Excited that C/P brought back their Perfume FD as it is my favorite of theirs. I do think that G/P have the better skating skills compared to C/P but since they've been inconsistent in the competitions this season I believe that will be a factor in their placement.

IMO, I believe that the USFSA already has decided at least 2 of the teams going to the Olympics and they're trying to figure out between C/P, G/P and Shibs who the 3rd spot will be.

Regarding Neset/ Markelov, yes, there are a lot of ice dance teams in the U.S., but N/M's abilities are as good as or better IMO, than Bratti/ Somerville and Pate/ Bye, as well as competitive and comparable with Wolf/ Tsar. The marriage gossip hurt perceptions of N/M, unfairly of course. I don't think it will have any lasting negative impact. But, it was uncalled for to begin with. This can be such a cutthroat sport.
I completely agree that the marriage gossip has hurt them perception wise, and I also hope that the negativity goes away.

I thought Emily samuelson split with Evan bates due to his injury. How they went after madison chock for not being a good enough partner

I accidentally posted on the old ice dance thread, so reposting here.
I’m overall really happy with the results of the Nationals rhythm dance! I’m glad Emily & Ian had a great comeback after a disappointing season. Wonderful skating and scores for Chock & Bates, Brown & Brown, Zingas & Kolesnik, Christina & Anthony, Parsons & Green. I don’t envy USFS having to choose the team. Zingas & Kolesnik did so well this season that it would make a lot of sense to choose them. As for Christina and Anthony and Parsons and Green, I love both teams so I’ll be sad for whoever is not chosen.

I’m very relieved that USFS did not fluff the Shibutani’s scores. I do not want them on the Olympic team. There are far more talented teams, and Alex’s verbal abuse has no place on Team USA

This is for the U.S. ice dance thread. It is extremely old news. But just to correct you: Evan split with Emily after sustaining the foot injury via her skate blade during a training practice. During that time, Madison Chock's former partner, Greg Zuerlein retired. Thus, Shpilband was looking for a new partner for Madi and Evan fit the bill. In other words, Evan was fully on-board with switching partners.

Yes, fans of Emily & Evan were 'mad as hell' and blamed Madi forever and a day for 'stealing' Evan. The truth is obviously different from fans' pent-up rage and hate directed at Madi, which continued unabated for years. Gradually, some of the hate ceased as saner fans became accustomed to Evan/Madi skating together. Still, Chock/Bates weren't very popular until they got some interesting programs from Rohene Ward circa 2016. And later, when they went to Montreal coaches and were transformed by Marie-France's choreo, and eventually carved out a new on-ice identity for themselves.

Bringing your comments to the correct thread:

The US ice dance pool is an embarrassment of riches... I will be sad for Green/Parsons if they once again end up as the first alternates. But there's no denying how good Z/K have become since they started only 4 years ago... And C/P have a better body of work than G/P in the last 3 years.

I am also relieved that the book on the Shibsibs is firmly shut. I feel bad for Maia though. I hope she finds joy in whatever pursuit she goes for. I'd be happy if she skated with a different partner, but we all know that's never gonna happen.
IMO, Car/Pom and Gr/Par are fairly much on a par in terms of ability. I prefer Gr/Par, but they lost a ton of momentum and good perceptions from the judges since they were encouraged by U.S. fed to switch to MIDA. Car/Pom are simply lucky to have Moir/Hubbell as their coaches. Scott Moir worked extensively with Carreira while Anthony was rehabbing from surgery a few seasons ago. Moir turned Carreira into a much better ice dancer. Hubbell and input from Tessa Virtue aided in Carreira's ice dance diva transformation.

The right coaches can make a huge difference in skaters' career trajectories.

IMO, Zingas/Kolesnik are a nice team. They have worked extremely hard. Plus, their coaching team, led by Shpilband is excellent and is also well-connected politically. Once C/B finally leave the U.S. ice dance scene, I think Z/K and C/P will not only have G/P, the Browns, and Brat/Somer to deal with, but also up-and-coming Wolf/ Tsar; Neset/Markelov; and Cui/Rogers.

I wish Isabella Flores had a better partner than Jepsen. They look much improved since Lake Placid last summer, but they still have so much work to do in order to have a hope of being competitive at top levels. Of course, Flores used to be on-the-rise before she was forced to split with Ivan Desyatov. If Flores & Desyatov were still together, they would be right in the mix. As it is, they certainly 'left their mark' on the ice dance field, as a young, exciting team. Flores was also excellent when paired in juniors with Dima Tsarevski.

Mark your calendar for the 2027 - 2028 season, when the very talented junior champs, Aboian/ Veselukhin, will be moving up to seniors. Lots of depth and riches is true!

Green actually pushed for her and Parsons to move to MIDA from Killiakov's. So it wasn't really a push from USFS. I prefer Gr/Par over Car/Pon in terms of skating skills and difficulty they bring. I agree with Gabby's comments that Car/Pon tell a story more.

^ Yep @labgoat, Paul Poirier's interest in trying out with Madison Chock years ago, is mentioned in the recent Netflix ice dance documentary. I wonder if a follow-up episode will be filmed. Probably not, since C/B did not win the individual Olympic gold medal. And there was all the overdone drama about FB/C winning. Of course, Piper/ Paul were the best on the night and should have won gold, which would make a great story for follow-up coverage by Netflix.

We'll see how things turn out at 2026 Worlds. Somehow, so much seems anticlimactic after the Olympics. However, I would love to see Piper/ Paul win Worlds in their final competition, after being denied too many times.

While we will miss CB at worlds USA is in good hands with Z/K who have a great chance to step on to the podium. CP will move up and they will be assured three spots for next year.

Could ZK beat Piper and Paul? I think i t is prejudged like at the olympics the French are the team to beat (ot sure the word is prejudged) I worry because I thought Piper and Paul with their RD and FD at olympics deserved gold and I am not sure they can recapture that FD which was amazing. But I do want them to win for it seems this team has had a lot of roadblocks in their way from cancer, judging and arguably they should have had a world title. I do fear they are the new Weapo team although they did win an olympic individual medal. But ZK look great for a medal. And Green and Parsons are no slouches but there are a lot of very good teams including Guillaume and Laurence; Piper and Paul, Z/K, France 2, CP, Fear and Gibson, the Lithuanians, LaLa and a couple of eastern european teams all could beat them even without CB and Italy.

We do not know what's going to happen. Yes, especially in ice dance, it's not unusual for skaters to be prejudged prior to the competition. In an Olympic year, judges also tend to stick with Olympic results. But, with C/B out, anything could happen. I definitely root for PiPa to win gold, as they should have won Worlds at least once or twice already.

I suppose Z/K have a chance to move up to the podium because they are better skaters than Fear/Gibson. But F/G have been overly favored for a while. Lilah had errors and nerves at the Olympics which took them out of podium contention there. I do not see Green/Parsons suddenly being viewed favorably despite how good they are. Their stock, for whatever reason, has been down with the judges. Lajoie/ Lagha are excellent ice dancers, too, but they have not stood out with their choice of material over the past few seasons. They need a complete reset and revamp in the off-season to find material that will enhance who they are on the ice. Picking overdone, safe material has done them no favors.

Regarding Allison & Saul, they are a fun team to watch, and they picked material this season that is right in their style wheelhouse. Thus, things have worked exceedingly well for them, but in terms of SS, they are not one of the best teams. It will be interesting to see how they (and a lot of teams, including F/G) will fare with the Golden Waltz RD next season. Being an I.AM team helps Allison & Saul with the judges. Since they have scored well all season, I suppose they have a chance to fight for the podium. Still, there are much better teams than them, including Z/K, G/P, and even Olivia & Tim, IMO.

Lopareva/Brissaud, the second French team are not my cup of tea. They are talented for sure, but I find them overrated. L/B lost a bit of momentum with the judges due to French #1 FB/C's successful new partnership return. Car/Pom have been helped to improve by their coaches, Moir/ Hubbell. Yet, C/P did not have the best season with their choice of material, which is why they switched back for the Olympics to last season's well-received Perfume FD. I actually preferred Z/K, G/P, and the Browns much more this season than Car/Pom. Whatever the overall outcome at '26 Worlds, the U.S. should have no problems maintaining three spots for ice dance.

Do you think that training in France hurts a US team, instead of keeping it in North America? It is much harder to monitor teams when they are across the pond.

Yes, they can send videos, but nothing beats seeing the teams up close live. I have seen some US teams training in IAM (Toronto and Montreal) go to the US for monitoring.

Just wondering why there seems to be very little support for Flores and Jepsen.

Verdict is still out for me as far as if this will be good partnership or not. I did see improvement as the season went on.

As for training in France...I could see that hurting them for citizenship issues. He will have to establish residency in the US at some point just like Christina did to obtain US citizenship.

They are a very new team. In terms of support, they apparently have some modicum of support from U.S. fed. Many fans of Isabella also still support her in this new partnership, just as many fans who loved her exciting partnership with Desyatov, are grieving and trying to adjust and accept the unfair and unfortunate two splits Isabella suffered through no fault of her own. She is very brave in her passionate determination to continue her career. She lost a whole promising season ('24 - '25) with Desyatov. 🥺 They had two wonderful programs and Desyatov was the perfect ice dance partner for Isabella. They were definitely on-the-rise. In fact, their compelling partnership and their Kaitlyn Weaver choreographed programs have had a huge influence on their peers.

Isabella starting over with someone she has had to struggle with more in order to improve, can't be easy. Still, from her IG posts, it seems that Isabella is enjoying training in France. It's not known whether she had hoped to switch and rep France. If that was the case, the U.S. may not have wanted to release her. She would surely have an easier path to French citizenship than Jepsen has to obtaining U.S. citizenship. In general, it appears that teams where one partner is not a U.S. citizen, tend not to be favored no matter how good they are. Certainly Flores/ Desyatov, while respected by U.S. fed, were not fully embraced. U.S. fed always tended to favor other teams such as Wolfkostin/ Tsarevski, and the former team, Morosov/Chen. Yet, M/C were only together less than a year, and their partnership was not very exciting nor well-matched. Go figure.

The jury is still out on the Flores/ Jepsen partnership. No matter what, I hope that Isabella can succeed. Good partners are so difficult to find.

Here's a fun interview with Green/ Parsons posted by Jackie Wong on his Rocker Skating podcast, in the lead up to '26 Worlds in Prague:

There are a few strong ice dance schools. One of them is MIDA. Does anyone know what is going on because it seems like Charlie White is disappearing for lack of words as the coach or part of the coaching team for skating teams. I thought he was one of the major forces of this group?

He was. But Charlie is no longer associated with MIDA following his divorce from Tannith - Tannith and Greg Zuerlein, along with Brooke Castile, are still coaching in Canton. Meanwhile, it was revealed this week that Charlie is coaching in Italy with Barbara Fusar Poli (not making this up). The split was apparently triggered by his affair with an Italian skater over the last year.

I personally will refrain from getting on a high horse and throwing out gossipy, holier-than-thou character judgements regarding a situation that happens within many marriages for many reasons. Even without knowing any specifics, from the students' immediate reactions at MIDA, and speculative commentary, I sadly suspected something of this nature.

I personally wish both Tanith and Charlie the best of luck and best wishes for their individual healing. Most especially, all the best to both of them in parenting their son through this sad break-up. Life happens to each and every one of us. Quite often, life is daunting and upsetting. For sure, betrayals and personal failures abound all over the place. The most important thing is not what happens to us, but how we respond to the challenging stuff that happens, whether occurring unexpectedly and unfairly out-of-the-blue or sadly self-imposed.
