2025 Worlds: Women's thoughts and comments

Polina Edmunds, with guest, Nicole Bobek, rundown the women's event at 2025 Worlds. I love this conversation. Wow, so many great insights and scintillating takes. I love Nicole's emphasis on the importance of packaging and music selection, especially knowing what your music is about! I love seeing Nicole with Polina. It would be so cool to see much more from Nicole. 🥰

As for me, I cannot see in these data any evidence that there is a big sinister conspiracy alternately to push Kaori forward and then to hold her back by crooked scoring, now one way, now the other. Lots of skaters sometimes get called for a q or a ! and sometimes don't.

There are many borderline calls that can -- and do -- go one way or another. The challenge to the skater is to be so perfect every time out that there can be no question. Easier said than done.
Kaori, far from being held back, is not getting edge calls on her lutz. Politically, Kaori is backed by Japan fed. It is Wakaba who gets shortchanged and held back. Polina Edmunds and Nicole Bobek agree, though Polina is the one who specifically voiced this briefly in a diplomatic way. Nicole likes both Kaori and Wakaba for their power, but agrees with Polina that Wakaba has the better overall jump technique, including huge length on her jumps.

Polina Edmunds always comes up with thoughtful insights. I wish she could get a wider on-ine audience and some commentating gigs.

Polina may or may not want to do commentating. I don't know. I imagine that you really have to want such a gig as a former champion skater. And then be well-connected and well-liked by broadcast decisionmakers. Polina is very much into understanding technical aspects. She may be less interested in or good at the schmoozing and witty byplay that's expected in the commentating booth. Certainly, Polina and Nicole both provided better insights about all the top women competitors at 2025 Worlds than I've ever heard from TaraL over the course of her career with NBC.

In Polina's other segments, Jean-Luc Baker is outstanding discussing ice dance at 2025 Worlds. 😍 Baker is definitely a skilled broadcast commentary prospect. But again, is it something he's interested in? 🤔 Ashley Cain was very good with the pairs review, and BrianB was fun and gave some nice, but less in-depth insights on the men's event. All segments with Polina are well worth listening in on.

As well, check out the new Tony Wheeler/ Thomas Vu podcast, The Skating Session. They have posted great reviews of each discipline at 2025 Worlds, with bonus discussions about aspects of the rules in ice dance, and how the sport can be improved. They have also posted reviews of 2025 WTT, plus an engaging discussion about the possible impacts of the ShibSibs comeback.
