Another thing is that skiing is such a way of life in such countries - every school holidays there are ski schools for kids, middle schools and high schools have ski teams, schools will have ski trips, etc. I live in Switzerland and that's the way it is here. We even have a February school break that's just called "ski week." So skiing is much less "solo" than skating.

Yep, lot more people fit into skiing course or slalom slope at the time, than skating rink or ice Also, lot more skiing facilities than ice rinks, I can pick up my skis, walk 200 metres, put them on my feet and go...well actually, I could do same with skates too if I had them Maybe this was not the best explanation, oh well...

Yes, he did, his co-commentator Louise sounded pretty exasperated when she replied to this. He's been commentator since 1984 if Wikipedia is to be believed.
