it's not tango though

"Street tango" is my ballroom dance teacher's dismissive term for any inauthentic Spanish-style stomping around, whether it's an attempt to portray tango, paso doble, flamenco, etc etc. This had moments of that. Hopefully it will improve as the season goes on.

It's his own term. It's his job to teach any dance properly, to international competitive standard, and he doesn't like seeing it imitated. In the USA they have both Standard and Smooth dance, which are roughly the equivalent of set-pattern dances and FD on the ice. The rest of the world just does Standard, and he's not a fan of competitions on TV where celebrities do Smooth programs with pros.

He absolutely hated "Strictly Ballroom".

(On my ballroom forum, there's a sub-forum for tango fanatics who dance nothing but that one dance -- which is not considered a Latin dance, it's grouped with waltz, foxtrot, etc. The current active thread is "Has Buenos Aires lost its tango soul?")

As a non-dancer but fan, I admit I enjoyed their rhythm dance -lots more than last week in Quebec. I love their speed and smoothness. There are rough patches but I expect that to improve. I expect some of their movements to get sharper as well. I don’t know the music and whether the waltz part was forced in or not. It jars a bit now but won’t pass judgement yet on it.

What I don’t like are the voiceover for their Tron programme (and every Tron programme) . Every time I hear Jeff Bridges say “then one day - I got in”, I cringe. Keep the Tron programme but get rid of Jeff’s stupid dialogue. It detracts from the programme. Okay that’s my rant today (I hope).

Rebecca LAIU / Marty HAUBRICH landed two triple throws: 3T and 3S (Good for them!!)

Rough skate for Jazmine DESROCHERS / Kieran THRASHER. They fell three times. But, landed the 3S throw. They would not achieve the domestic benchmark. Good thing they are on the National Team.

Ava KEMP / Yohnatan ELIZAROV were horrible. The good: They landed the 3T. The bad is that they fell on both triple throws and struggled with lifts and even completing elements. Our NEW Senior Pairs need a lot of work before they debut in the Grand Prix circuit.

That was an upset in Pairs. Also, Jazmine DESROCHERS / Kieran THRASHER finally attempted the 3S single jumps. So, they must be making progress on their salchows.

Well... I hope K/E know what to work on before their gp in a few months. I also hope they get at least a challenger or another domestic attempt so they are at least going into it with a better outing behind them.

I think the pairs are learning to adapt to the senior world with adding triple SBS and on top of that, have to deal with the new choreo elements. Many invalidated elements this weekend means that they are not confident yet.
