A fair way to pick GPF finalists?

Haha exactly, All the disciplines will have 2 groups and Pairs will need 3 groups and an ice resurface :laugh2:

Well, they could still squeeze a bit over the day (i see hr long gaps on saturday) - and there are whole 4hrs of exibition which could be replaced with competition (yeah, sucks for officials etc).

I mostly mean that while it is hard, and will require some extra $$$, it is still cheaper and easier than to, for example, get all TEB people to skate their FS, or make a whole new GP.

What I mostly fear is that somehow the ISU will come up with a plan that treats everyone else equally but manages to make it look like Patrick is getting special favorable treatment.

Poor guy.No matter what he does or doesn't do he ends up in the focus of an uncomfortable spotlight.

Anything they do will make it look like that... Because all TEB skaters are pretty much in that situation already.
If they take just SP scores, people will cry that Gracie and Shoma got special treatment and they would have bombed the FS.
If they add anyone extra to the GPF, people will cry there are favourites, big nasty federations with their darlings, etc etc

I guess only way to not look like anyone got special treatment will be just void TEB results at all, so all TEB skaters don´t get into GPF etc.
Then all fans would unite and complain how ISU is awful lols. That would actually be a very elegant solution to the problem.

That's giving all non-TEB skaters special treatment. The TEB men's event had 2 of the 3 GP winners so far.

Damn, yeah. They can cancel GP this year (after everybody skates their GPs, and TEB folks also skate their FS), strip all medals and take away the prize money from everybody.
That would be equally fair to everybody then =D

Everybody skated, nobody got to GPF, nobody got medals, nobody got $$$.

I don't like this idea because it would be using "virtual" scores obtained in completely different conditions, let alone the fact that all the skaters have had different chances in terms of how many competitions they've done etc. For me, it would be even less fair than using SP scores as final results.

But then again, what if the 1st tiebreaker is not enough? How do we compare totaled scores with only the SP score? The tie is not broken and both go to the final?

Puh-lease...."Unfair, and not right", I will take, but it can't be more unfair than just taking SP. There are quite a number out there who do great in their SP and start falling apart in their LP, and vice Versa. Yulia Lipnitskya being the prime example of doing great in SP and then having a splat fest for the past two season. I bet people were expecting her to land 3 triples and basically pop up every other ones (even though I secretly wanted her to hit 140 points just to shock everyone )

I really wish they could have continued behind closed doors. :/

But then again, that's without taking into account the possible mental trauma in the skaters. :/

I wonder, can't they just reschedule all the LP? Seems the only fair way. :/

That does sound extremely fair to figure out the results based on assumptions of what we expect to happen. Sounds about right

Yes, and there are also quite a number of competitions where the top 3 after the SP remain the top 3 in the final standings. Taking a hypothetical scenario is the worst solution you could make; that defeats the entire purpose of figure skating being a sport, of doing it when it matters, of delivering under pressure. Then it just becomes a numbers game: "Mao Asada seems to have a cycle of peaking in even numbered years, so let's have her sit out this season and assume that she won worlds and give her the gold medal." No.

The SP happened. It is reality. So we should use reality as the basis of assigning points and confirming winners. Yes, "just taking SP" is not ideal, but it is better than nothing, and it is better than pulling numbers out of our behinds to fit what we think should have been the results.

As has been discussed ad nauseam, no, there is no fairy with a magic wand that's going to enable them to all be able to skate the LP. This is not a stupid idea in theory (in fact it is such an obvious idea someone would have to be stupid not to be able to think of it) but it is factually, in reality, impossible. Why has been explained over and over and over.

I think the longer the decision drags on the more likely it becomes that the ISU is going to do something really stupid.

I actually honestly think that they have probably tentatively agreed on some proposal and are arguing about how it's going to be financed. Money is king. :disapp:

I have to say I'm a bit confused about why finals at 7 or 8 but only if a TEB skater/pair is #7 or #8.
Why not finals at 7 or 8 full stop?
Why skaters/pairs who have done well in the short (first, second, third) at TEB but who have (or may have next weeks) a so-so second competition should have a chance more than people who had the same results but on a full event somewhere else?
If you have to compromise (short program, enlarging the finals field, ecc), at least do it so once the standings are out, all skaters are under the same rules, me thinks.

loool this is so true :))) seriousely in reality what Russians are proposing is "Liza Deal" but finally it will look like "Patrick deal." to be fair Patrick isn't in big danger to be out of the final, I doubt Jason can be 1st or 2nd in Japan .

OT: Patrick is special case for me, I complain a lot about him for years, sometimes get mad but at the end just end up still loving him :laugh2:

They could sacrifice the exhibition.
But then I think that organizers will have to return money for this day, cuz it will be event cancellation and exhibition tickets are the most expensive ones. It will be better to move some juniors a day earlier, or start an hour earlier each day, maybe have 3 SPs on Thursday and 3 Jr FS on Friday - something like that. I think now the question is will organizers agree to this?

If they're gonna expand the field, they must let Vivian skate in the junior final or I will start an angry mob. :angry2:

:p :laugh2:

I would guess that the proposal would be among the free alternatives, since the ISU hates spending money.

Isn't that effectively extending another day of competition to the GPF? I'm sure the officials weren't expecting to work on Sunday.

These are both valid points. I would hate to see the EX canceled. However the fun sucker in me things that competition is more important than exhibition, and logistically the ice is available.

I think I am going keep chanting your objections because it is what my heart wants, even if my inner Vulcan things it is a logical option.

To be fair to the ISU:

No doubt it already has lost significant $$$ because of the cancellation of TEB. For example:

It probably has to return some of the money that it received for broadcast/streaming rights.

Ticketholders are getting refunds.

Any extra costs involved in handling the response to the cancellation of TEB will be a double-whammy.

Money is king for anyone and everyone on the planet. The ISU cannot be blamed for that reality.
