Interesting quotes:
As it turns out, the Montreal couple probably would have won gold at the 2008 world meet in Goteborg, Sweden, next March had they not decided to take this season off because two-time world champions Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviski of Bulgaria are out of competition due to the criminal charges against Staviski following a traffic fatality.
Sure they would have won gold, but is it true - about their reason for taking a season off?

It should make for quite a show, and it is expected to include the return of Emanuel Sandhu, the former Canadian champion who begged off the GP circuit this season after crashing to 16th in Tokyo. The 27-year-old Vancouver resident will be the mystery man of the nationals.
Does this mean Sandhu is in?

This article will make a good subject for Canadian fans on this board.

Quite a livery discussion going on under the Canadian Nationals thread. A fair number of the members are knowledgeable in Canadian skating http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=173

I heard from a Skate Canada insider that the first alternative from the senior challenge was strongly encouraged to show up just in case Sandhu is not showing up. On the other hand, a few skating fans on the holidays on Ice saw Sandhu landing solid 3flip-3toe combinations on a very small show rink. He definitely looked fit in his ave maria routine that he used in the gala of the last year's nationals with better coverage, spins, and speed on the ice than from last year.

As for DL, I doubt they will ever come back. I thought it was pretty gracious of them to stay on for another year after the olympics to help Canada secure 3 spots in dance, considering they had been wanting to retire and move on with their life.

Yes, I wanted to post it first in the Canadian Nationals thread, but couldn't decide on the sub-thread.

Oh really? So there is a hope.

Yeah it is definately a good year for Canadian Figure Skating.

Yep Dubriel and Lauzon would've won gold this season had they've stayed in, but i guess they have their reasons for leaving the competitive circuit. However, they have said that they may return for the Olympics in '10 but i agree with fumie_fumie that they prolly will never come back now that they are most likely moving on with their life together.

yep it is a good year for Canadians especially in the men, ice dance, and pairs. Ladies' well, sure Joannie Rochette won bronze at I believe it was Skate Canada but she needs to be more consistent. I love watching Joannie Skate but she's either very brilliant (refering back to the fifth place finish at the Olympics) or very badly (refers to her last few finishes at Worlds.

Anyways, for the men, I saw Patrick Chan at his GP events this season and my first reaction was "Wow, he's actually 16" and i think that if he does what he did during the GP circuit that he could very well be the Canadian Men's Champion.
Buttle has really been slipping.

I think that at their Nationals its going to be interesting who gets the men's two spots, i'm sure that Sandhu (if he comes back), Buttle, Chan, Mabee, and Jeremy Ten will all be in the mix for the two spots.

In pairs wow Dube and Davidson are doing very well this year, let's hope that they go back to those GP circuit finishes.

Sure they would have won gold, but is it true - about their reason for taking a season off?
I think a comma is missing between "off" and "because."

That is, they would have won gold because Denkova and Staviski are out. Not, they retired because Staviski was in an auto accident.

It would be more correct to say D/L might have won gold had they competed this season. It wouldn't have been a slam dunk, though. B/A have improved greatly since their 'off' season, and DomShabs seem to be destined for World gold this season no matter what.

Actually with the Olympics looming ahead here in Vancouver/Whistler in now - oh my goodness 2 years, I expect quite a few of our Canadian skaters to get on board for the Olympics even if they have taken this season off. Among the returning I expect D&L (I think they will want to after what happened at their last Olympics!) and Emanuel Sandhu (after all the Olympics will be in his back yard Emanuel is a Vancouver boy). Also Emanuel does have the quad in his pocket as the saying goes. So really I will not be surprised to see these skaters return. It's really not over until it is over! My I am expressing the cliches today!!

"Let the Games Begin!"

Go Canadian Team!!!
