A New Era for Ice Dance?

One should remember that passion is in the eye of the behlolder. It really can not be compared since different cultures show it differently.
There is phony "passion" and real passion. The audience if not the judges can see this. I see G/P as not real passion. I see Denkova and Staviski also Delobel and Schoenfelder and Dubreiul and Lauson as showing real passon. Also last season Drobiazko and Vanagas.

"Angst", not "anger". Not the same thing. He means the constipated "I'm SOOO dramatic" expressions that a lot of ice dancers (and ballroom dancers) use as a substitute for passion. I admit, facial expressions are freakin' hard to control, but as my ballroom pro put it, "If you look constipated, you're doing it wrong."

Oh, and Tango = passion, Rhumba = Love, Cha Cha = flirting, Samba = sex, and Bolero = EXPLICIT sex. (There is no mystery about what's going on in that dance.)

   Yes! You have the supposed emotions just about right! This is a good list of what dance is about. Very funny, thank you.

As I said, it is in the eye of the beholder.

to help Joe make his point - I see G/P's passion to be very real...

If one has read 'Araby' by James Joyce one can understand the 'exotic' of things foreign. I think for people born in a multi cultural country will look for the exotic (passion) elsewhere.

While sometimes I wonder how much the ice dancers know about real ballroom, I know for a fact that some of them have done it. Ben Agosto used to dance ballroom with my friend's neice (WAY back when, like age twelve when). And I can actually see it in his body lines. I would actually prefer that they stick closer to ballroom--dont' make them take ballet to improve their posture, send them to a ballroom studio to improve their line and teach them to relate to each other. I know at least one very young team who's doing that right now.

Yes, I would too. I love it when OD's really reflect the character of the dance, and the best way to do that, I think is, take ballroom.

And I would love it if the skaters caught the character of the music in the FD. No one liked it from what I read but I thought Denk/Stav did an incredible job with that AfroBach.

Well i think it was a great FD

re ballroom on ice....

I'm with julietvalcour's comments....

our daughter does figure skating as well as competitive international ballroom-standards and latin-I agree, you can tell who on the ice has done it just by the body postures....there is something very different about the awareness going on in the body versus the stiff ballet positioning....

our daughter's pros are European-they love to use "descriptor words" and colors for dances-some a little differen than Juliet's but...:(perhaps its for age appropriateness??)...her favourites are....

waltz= romance--white (fluffy clouds)

rhumba-seduction

tango- passion and drama (BTW-Tango is also the woman's dance and paso is the man's) red

cha cha-flirty female--hot pink:laugh:

oh and....

when our pro's watch skating they say their biggest complaint is nobody is paying attention to the timing of the music....(well, except compulsories)...they mean generically, as in, all skating...

they say "we just don't get it"..."how can you skate through the music when there is rythmn to move you????"
