Alena Kostornaia

It did look like something was bothering her before she started. I don't think it had anything to do with her mistake. Hopefully its not bad news for her. :/

i hope nothing is going on either...i hope she confirms soon it's just a cold. it's just very odd she was so emotional when she didn't even fall...she's been able to brush mistakes off in the past but this was just really strange.

Either that or looks like she was crying before the competition. But something's definitely off. She wasn't reacting nearly this badly when she fell during last season's Russian jr nationals SP, for instance. And this wasn't even a fall. It really makes you wonder...

I would say that wing flutter probably threw her more than the jump did. Unfortunately with a noise and end pose like that you are either on it or you're not and tonight she wasn't. She covered it well but she was very clearly off and I can't actually pinpoint where she came off the music because even to the last spin it was fine, so clearly it was at the very last second but combine that with her popped jump and I think it would be very easy to catastropise and think you've messed up your entire program and skated two beats behind the music the entire time.

Poor angel :sad21: It definitely seems like something else must be going on - either that she has a cold or god forbid something happened before her skate to make her cry. She's such a little trooper though. She fought so hard for the rest of her jumps and actually managed not to get an edge call on her 3Lz and gained even more PCS than she had in Linz.

Like wise old Ted said it's important to make mistakes and learn from them and I'm sure she did. She showed Great Character by not letting that mistake early in her short program spillover and ruin the rest of it. It did not.

I know there's no use to dwell on what could have been, but had she landed the 2A and gotten the same GOE as in Austria, her score here would have topped Trusova's in Lithuania. She's so good, and she has everything it takes to be the best. No one can be perfect all the time, and I'm sure she'll learn from what happened and come back even stronger next time.

Funny you say that because even in her first competition I thought she could have used more concealer under her eyes. Today was even more pronounced.

Well, I talked to her (albeit very, very shortly) after her SP and FS last time and she looked healthy and happy to me, I couldn’t find any signs of sickness, she just looked a bit tired. This time, though, her eyes were very red even before taking the ice, you could see it on camera. I just hope she‘s fine. We‘ll find out on Saturday, I guess. 🙏🏻

:console:

Something was off, from the beginning. I hope it's just a flu.

Her reaction at the end was unexpected, and painful to see :sad21:, but she has fight until the end.

Now i'm worried...

She looked like she was with a cold...or had being cryng ... But her skate was beautifull even with a mistake

I think she is just very much a perfectionist so this mistake hit her hard. By the way some posts were on Instagram you would have thought she’d fallen on all her jumps! When I watched, it wasn’t all that bad to me. We all know how beautifully she can do that 2A, so I wasn’t too fussed. Even angels can’t always be perfect, right?! She is a strong girl, she pulled through for the rest of the program. But I think she just had so many negative emotions built up in her head and let them all out when she finished. I’m a perfectionist too; I understand. I see a very similar pattern to what happened with Anna’s JGPs. They both had incredible SPs and great FSs with a tiny mistake on a combo first time round; this time, both made big mistakes on one element but are still in the lead. Hopefully Alena will change her mindset and come back determined to show us what a stunning Juliet she is in the free [emoji1374][emoji1374] I believe in her

Awww... Cheer up Alina. You have a lyrical, emotive, magical talent to your skating unlike no other.

About last night. I'm glad she's still first. Her arm movements and skating skills were clearly way above the rest of the field. She deserved it. Hope she goes clean tonight. She's my favorite female skater, and rightly so. Best of luck Alina [emoji256]

on the bright side of things, i want to point out how awesome it is that as a junior lady with a completely missed jump that gets zero points she can score the same as some of the top senior ladies with clean short programs...wow. that says a lot about how good of a skater she is.

I agree. She has amazing skating skills and just an overall elegance on the ice. I couldn’t say she’s overscored because when she skates it’s truly angelic and like magic.

Also, I agree with everyone that something looked off before she started. I thought she may have been crying before her skate but it’s also possible she is just sick. I hope nothing too bad happened if she was crying. Good luck to the free Alyona. I know she’s going to be perfect as always and I look forward to it. :)

And the fact that she has Jackie Wong defending how her 70 point was well deserved and not overscored speaks for itself. Even Ted continually praises her musicality and artistry. She just stands out.

I really like her 3-3 combo. The Lutz has almost a delayed rotation to it and just carries a very impressive and likable aesthetic.

Too bad about the pop but if you’re going to pop a jump she certainly chose the right one. It happens....she’ll bounce back I’m sure. Good luck Alena in the FS :console:

Alena's an amazing skater, and the judges reward her for that. I was looking at protocols and the next four skaters below her had more TES than she did, because of the popped axel, but Alena ruled in PCS. I hope she does well going into her free

TBH if anything I think the pale, melancholic expression actually helped the PCS rather than hurt them. It certainly went with the theme and the style of the music. If I was a judge I would be like dang, that's some commitment to character right there .

It doesn't hurt that she has this translucent, tranquil  beauty to her skin and face too lol
